TOPIC | First driving test?

I'm taking my first driving road test tomorrow (I've had my permit for like 5 years lol but never got around to it) and I was wondering what they're like? Any advice? Or even just funny stories about road tests?

My tester told me it was almost impossible not to pass a driving test, as long as you know what you're doing.

And they really are just what you expect. The person tells you when and where to turn, you go the speed limit, answer a few questions, do a parallel park, and drive back. Don't hit anything, and don't hit a car when you parallel park, and you're as good as gold.

Mine was suuper easy. I just drove around the school and accompanying housing places. Did a lot of turns. Did a PERFECT parallel park when she was telling me there was no way I was gonna be able to do it the way my teacher taught me, and drove back. I forgot to go the speed limit around the school, but that didn't really hurt me that much apparently. All was cool. I passed my first time, no troubles. :>

Good luck on yours!

I was told to ask before correcting when you park - not sure how your place does it, but they'd nick points off every time you tried to readjust yourself. I screwed up the angle for parallel parking and asked the instructor if I should try again or leave it. He told me just to leave it, so I did and ended up passing despite it (so frustrating tho, i had done it PERFECTLY while practicing the day before). will say ive never had to parallel park since and probably never will

above everything.... just take a deep breath. be alert, use your blinker, check your blindspot. good luck!

I though with Covid-19, tests would be suspended in most areas. The city I'm in in CA suspended all behind the wheel tests for summer( not sure about fall) due to covid-19 and not wanting the instructors to be in close proximity with someone else in a car.

As for mine, uh, drove around, changed lane, turn, and that was pretty much it. I had to back up in a straight line along a curb but CA doesn't test parallel parking though so I actually never was tested for that. I still don't know how to parallel park, mostly because since it was never on the test none of my driving instructors ever really taught me how to do it. And my parents pretty much never taught me. It's never been an issue since I haven't really had to parallel park though.

Anyway, good luck!

Voici mon secret. Il est très simple: on ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.- Le petit prince.
It might be a little late for me to offer this up, but back before I took my test, I would regularly practice at the DMV. It was a small, local DMV, but they had the parking test (including parallel) already set up. Perfect for practice. Took a couple routes around the DMV to test possible driving loops (usually a few blocks, not far, and easy to return to the DMV from). *Forgot to note I went on days or during hours the DMV was closed.

Good luck :)
(Also, breathe. I was so nervous the poor lady testing me probably got really jostled with my sharp breaking, haha.)

lol, I had to take it twice. The first time, I had school after the test, and I did not want to be late, so I rushed. Never rush on your driver's test. Nothing happened, but the proctor said I had rolled through some stop signs. My advise to you is clear anything you have scheduled close after the test, and relax as much as possible. Good luck!

the second time, I did not shut the driver door all the way, and I pretended that the door always made a whistling noise when I drove b/c I did not want the proctor to doc me points for an incorrectly shut door. I was also in the winter, and the roads were super icy, but I made it!

@Sedai Unfortunately I live in a less quarantined part of the country and Really need my license soon. Fortunately, they screen you and require facemarks, plus only allow a handful of people in at a time.

Also thank you everyone for the good luck wishes! I do feel prepared, I drove around the area and practiced my parallel parking, but I'm just a nervous sort

You'll probably be fine so don't worry about it too much! I also had my permit for a few extra years cause reasons and I was anxious about my test but honestly it turned out fine. I just had to drive around a block, do some lane changes, etc.

Some advice would be to make sure you fully stop at stop signs, most places take off points if you just slow down and then go. For your nerves it may sound trivial but take a few minutes to take some deep breathes and calm your self down before you start. Once you start driving your nerves kinda go away cause you're focused on the road, so it'll all be fine.

Good luck with your test~

I think our tests are done a lot differently - they're 40 minutes on open traffic/roads and you follow directions or follow road signs or follow sat nav, depending on the instructor/random chance/part of the test; then you perform one manoeuvre and answer some show me/tell me questions which are randomly chosen. So no advice I can give you there would apply, really, except; eat breakfast before you go, try to go in prepared, and try to relax. If you don't pass first time, it's not the end of the world. I took two tests to pass which is pretty normal for our kind of tests here. Good luck!

Have you taken any driving lessons, especially with the people you're testing with? I think I only did like 2-4 hours with the people that tested me despite already knowing how to drive. I mostly did it so that I knew what they expect from me and their methods of driving.
  • Be sure to drive at speed limit. I know most people (at least in my state), and even myself, tend to drive ~5 mph over the speed limit. That's a no-go for the testers. I hated the pressure of being "slower" than everyone else around me and holding up the line, but you've gotta ignore that.
  • Use the heck out of your blinkers. I think I had to when backing out and parallel parking.
