TOPIC | is this a "waste of money"
1 2 3
A $180 (relatively cheap) completely hand-forged, heat tempered, steel katana with a rayskin and Japanese wool handle. Sharpened by whetstone and can be completely disassembled and reassembled for interchangeable handle and hand-guard...

I have 3 decorative steel swords on my dresser; a katana, wakizashi, and tanto. Looking to replace them with genuine ones but both of my parents say that it's a waste of money despite the fact that they would let me buy $180 worth of something else that I myself would consider a "waste of money" in comparison to a hand made sword.

I mean like... I have the money... what ya'll think

If you have the available disposable income and you aren't putting off paying important stuff to buy it and it's something you'd enjoy then it isn't a waste.
Other people might see it as a waste just like you might see what they buy as a waste. That's ok though maybe a little rude to say sometimes.
If you live with your parents it might be worth considering how much you need the thing right now with the reaction you'd get. Could you live with however they'd react if you bought it?

As long as it's not a financial strain, I say go for it! I would also take your time making the decision, think about what you'll do with the item and why you want it. $180 for an awesome decorative piece, conversation starter, and craftsman item feels just fine to me. If people pay that much for paintings, which can't cut veggies in a pinch or help you in a swordfight, I see no problem with buying something that can actually do those things. [emoji=ridgeback winking size=1] Your parents may just be concerned that you'll need that $180 when you get out in the world, that you're being shortsighted in your thinking, or that you'll eventually regret the purchase (common parent fears in my experience). It might help ease their concerns if you lay out exactly why you want to replace the sword (supporting craftsmen, connecting to a culture, etc.) and maybe suggesting some things to offset the cost? Like "look mom/dad I know this is expensive but to prevent it from affecting my budget in any way I'm going to eat out one less time a week for the year" or something like that. You could also talk to them about how if it comes to pass that you don't care for the sword anymore you can sell it and recoup some of your losses. You of course don't have to do any of these things, I don't know your situation, but when I was a kid approaching my parents like this really helped! Often they were just instinctively reacting and reassuring them that I wasn't just being an impulsive teenager definitely helped to assuage their fears. That's how I got my Nintendo DS and was the coolest kid in school back in 2006 lol [emoji=sunglasses size=1]

I mean, if you know what you're doing (as far as sword care goes), even if you still intend to use it as a decorative piece, then I don't see why it would be.

If you have the money, buy whatever keeps your heart pumpin'. For some, video games are a waste of money. If it's your passion, do it.

*shrug* Your cash, friend. Technically all decorative items are "a waste of money" but like whatever, they're nice. If you have the monsy and spending them isn't a problem, what's the big deal?

it's never a waste of anything if you enjoy it! swords are cool and what matters is that it sparks joy.
I mean like... I have the money... what ya'll think
If you can afford it and it appeals to you, go for it. "Waste of money" is all your perspective. A lot of people would consider the stuff my girlfriend and I collect (action figures and prop replicas from TV and movies we like) a waste of money, but they appeal to us. Likewise, her dad owns a few screen used props from a few Star Trek series. To some people, our stuff might seem like a waste, but it isn't like we're going without paying bills or getting food or anything, nor are we taking money from someone else to buy it.

Formerly known as Brenning.

Basically what everyone else already said.

Some will spend $300+ on stereotypical home decor and while it’s odd to other people, it makes them happy, so why not?

So long as you have enough to pay for essentials, and nobody is being harmed then go for it! I have a giant fan I got from the antique shop that I just adore having!

If it sparks joy!
