TOPIC | favorite kind of horror movie?
1 2 3 4
i'm a big fan or horror movies, so i'm curious to see what kind of sub-genres people are into with it. i'm talking zombie flicks, slasher films, gore fests, etc.

my favorite genre which keeps getting screwed over by hollywood is found footage films. the concept of it really interests me and can be a very good story telling tool, which is why i really like the first paranormal activity and blair witch project. shame that both of those movies got absolutely drained and ruined by very bad sequels :(

i've never been able to pin down a specific sub-genre as a favorite, honestly! though i really love any horror movie with great gore and/or body horror it

i grew up watching family play games like DOOM and Parasite Eve, and it kinda influenced me big time, ha ha ha

I'm very much a fan of the supernatural type of horror; the weirder the better. Ring and Hellraiser are probably my two favorite franchises/series.

I did have a slasher phase for a while and I still really love the 2018 Halloween, but there are only so many times you can watch "evil monster stalks miscreant teenagers" before it gets tedious and you find yourself rooting for the monster.

@novakinn
There's a Scooby Doo spoof of the Blair Witch Project and it is amazing.

Psychological horror and cosmic horror.

For the found footage style ones, have you ever seen Rec? (Or I think it was called Quarantine for the remade version of it.)

@BladeDancer we have the same tastes my dude! :)

I really like psychological horror (much to the disappointment of my mom who prefers just regular old blood and guts), anything that really makes you contemplate the world once you finish it.

I also really like monsters, the more freaky the better. Cosmic horror is also one of my favorites (as my webcomic below can attest lmao), I love love love eldritch things. Literally half of my characters are weird, geometric beings.

@GingaSnap

Yeah, the fear of the unknown and things that the human mind just can't comprehend are much scarier to me than gore and jump scares.
I love monster designs like that, stuff that just doesn't make sense to look at.

The sad thing is it's very hard to find films (or games) that do any of this well. I'll check out your webcomic, that sounds like my kinda thing!

I love comedy horrors, along the lines of stuff like later "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Freddy vs Jason", most of the "Evil Dead" franchise, the few post-"Child's Play" Chucky movies before they went back to the more horror roots, "Gremlins 2", "Shaun of the Dead" and stuff like that.

That isn't to say I don't like more serious stuff, but I just gravitate toward horror with comedy elements.

I also enjoy horror films with shades of grey, where the "monsters" or whatever aren't always clear cut evil or bad, like where you might have vampires defending humans from other vampires or the grotesque alien monster is actually trying to protect people from the true villain which might even be a human. Because it just bugs me that in most movies, not human usually automatically means bad/evil.
