Wolf’s rain - the last two OVA episodes were just... apocalyptic

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia - You don’t expect the ending to be that well done and horrifically sad since it’s a fun, school romance with elements of supernatural, but it is heartbreaking **.

Wolf Children - Single mom trying to raise two hybrids after her husband (a werewolf) dies. It’s one of those growing up stories that hit you right in the feels and makes you want to call your parents to talk to them.

K Project.

After the first season I sat there and cried for like 10 minutes just because of the ending, and not knowing if there was going to be a second season. I just sat there, crying, waiting for a next episode, but one never came. ;-;

Eventually a movie and a second season were released, but like a YEAR later. But I also cried in the ending of that second season. It was just so sweet, and precious, I don't know how anybody could keep dry eyes with an ending like it does have.

Definitely agree with some of the other responses; Wolf's Rain, Wolf Children, K Project. And yeah, Banana Fish ending crUSHED ME

I would like to add Madoka Magica and Children of the Whales. Oh, Zankyou no Terror. If we go manga, Cat Street made me cry a bunch.

My Roommate is a Cat.
It's a really wholesome anime, but the characters have sad backstories that really made me cry. I still highly recommend it though.

Here are some that gave me an existential crisis after being watched within a week of eachother- Shiki, Guilty Crown. But it wasn't really the show itself but thinking about the greater connitations of characters/peoples actions in relation to the final outcomes.

There's a lot more manga than anime I could list; Berserk isn't really sad, just completely bleak but I can't not reccomend it. It's an increadible manga (golden age arc in particular.)

In terms of something that managed to actually make me cry, Steel Ball Run. It isn't very sad to be honest, on the contrary i'd say it's very 'upbeat' for most of the story. But, a coupke of moments were very hard-hitting. And it wasn't because of connotations or anything but purely because of the story telling and characters. Can't recommend both of these enough, definetly have some of the best art I've ever seen too.

I don't get why people find Angel beats super sad, like I watched it and didn't cry/feel upset? Madoka Magica too, I found it boring personally. But I guess it's more of a personal thing.
