I feel like these are pretty common things! At least in the Internet spaces I’m in lol! It’s very interesting to think about how people have developed these sorts of indicators so tone is clearer in text. At least, before stuff like /s and /j was more widely used.

I follow a person on Twitch that often tweets or titles their streams with :) without it being a sarcastic or passive aggressive thing, so I’ve kind of grown attached to using it as a normal smiley, but I sometimes worry that it comes across the wrong way bc I know lots of people see it that way haha

I assume that anyone that uses XD is 12-14.
I'm trying to stop because I realize that anyone can use XD, it's just that XD has that young-teen vibe to it.

I love using emoticons, and I'm usually the first in a convo to use them and it's always so funny when the person I'm talking to uses them too lmao

tbh my least favorite emoticon is probably QwQ just bc of how it's read

for an assumption...I feel if someone signs their posts they're way older than me


(also, I love typing with...emotion? Just like my stream of thoughts. I'm kinda new to it, but it gets the point across that i can't form thoughts very well lol)

LOL okay i used to think that too but first off my dad sends it and it's so sweet ;w; and second off when i started playing ffxiv literally everyone uses it in chat because in the EU servers everyone speaks tons of different languages and :) is like, the single universal thing we all use besides o/ of course, but i totally get what you mean

i used to be in the "xD is little kid/teen speak" category too but MMOs really change how your typing and text language goes, i use it constantly now

Yeah, it just feels weird for some reason. I also like to add "lol" or ~ at the end of sentence to not make it sound too stiff or to express good mood~
It's funny when you think about that, writing can express many things but it's almost impossible to interpret feelings or intentions based on blank text. Even the emojis can be interpreted differently, the ":)" is great example of that

...As someone who uses smileys a lot, I find this new information Very Concerning. I had no idea people saw them negatively!

Edit: And I have a habit of adding a clown nose because I like the vibes - I think I've made some horrible mistakes :o(

what's weird is that i just completely forgot that :) can be seen as passive aggressive?? like, i used to before, i'm not sure how i stopped seeing it as that. maybe its contextual for me, because i tend to see "frogs :)" as friendly and "okay thanks :)" as if there is something off here

also if i see someone use XD i tend to assume they're either younger or someone whos older than 27 and too used to 2000's era internet to change
