I’ve been slowly chipping away at FFXV after getting it as a Christmas present last year (only just recently remembered I had it) and so far it’s been...actually a lot more fun to play than I thought it would be. I know there’s a couple different things to dive into when it comes to the games and I’m not quite sure where to go from here. I’ve been told mostly about the ff7 remake, and a little bit about ffxiv (but online games aren’t my thing.)
Spoiler-free, please! I’m only about 10 hours into ffxv, and I’d rather not hear anything else ‘spoilery’ from the other games incase I do find them interesting.
Just kind of pique my interest, I guess? I’m not usually too good at these kind of...(semi?) open-world jrpg’s, but ffxv seems to be paced well enough that I can actually follow along without feeling like I’m lost. I like the feel of a lot of games like that, but when it comes to buying them myself I’m actually horrible at them, lol. I wanna know if there are other games that are similar in the ff series, since I like the themes of the one I’ve played so far!

The great thing is, aside from a few rare instances that are mostly spin-off stuff or direct sequels, everything is pretty self contained. For example, the world and characters of 7 have nothing to do with 6 or 8 (or any other number), so for the most part you're not missing out on anything if you skip a few games or play out of order. There are many shared concepts and creatures (like Moogles and Chocobos and certain game mechanic names), but otherwise each number is a world and story to itself.

And Bravely Default shares a lot of the same general concepts (it was originally planned as a Final Fantasy spin-off). It has some stuff unique to the Bravely Default games, but a lot of the general themes are virtually identical to Final Fantasy's.

I haven't played many FF games other than XIV & XV, so I'm in a similar boat to you! But like BunnyUnicorn said, very few games are directly linked together- most games have completely unique worlds & characters. Unless the game is specifically said to be in the same universe as another game (ie: Dirge of Cerberus & Crisis Core are in the FFVII universe, FFX has some sequels, as does FFXIII), then you can just hop into it without any previous knowledge.

I hope you like FFXV, though! I'm personally not a huge fan of how the story was paced, but overall, I think it's a fantastic game- the DLCs are very fun as well, if you ever get around to it! Definitely a good add-on to the existing story, they've fleshed out the game a bunch over the years.

I feel you on FFXIV though, online games aren't really my thing- though once I got into it, I was hooked. The story and characters are amazing, it only gets better the more you get into it. It might be a bit slow or confusing at first, but the majority of people in the game are willing to at least point you in the right direction. Most of the online content is PvE rather than PvP (working with a team rather than fighting other players, PvP is just a very tiny bit of the community), which is what drew me towards the community in the first place. I've had a ton of fun fleshing out my own characters in the game as well, there's a ton of customization options and many fun classes to play!

Though, the game is most fun when played with people you know, so it might be a bit overwhelming or just not your thing if you decide to play alone. But it does have a pretty extensive free trial if you ever want to give it a shot!

my FATHER?
@Mokuba, I don't know how to tell you this... but you have some new siblings. This little lad is Vivi. He's a Black Mage from Final Fantasy IX. I can't tell you much about him except he is good boi and please protect him. This here is Gau, from Final Fantasy VI. He's the absolute epitome of the word "feral", what with having been raised by monsters and all. But he's my perfect gremlin babbie and I love him. Technically, Gabbiani has custody over the child. But she is a good stealy crime bean nonetheless. Now, this doesn't mean I love you any less, Mokie. You'll just have to get used to being an older sibling.

You don't really need to min/max for PVE, and you tend to get a lot of the new gear you need as you complete quests along the way. Plus there is a lot of other stuff to do besides combat stuff. I waste SO MUCH time at the Gold Saucer (a big casino/arcade thing with various minigames) and wandering around playing Triple Triad that I probably could have finished all the extra story stuff and leveled up other jobs I haven't yet, but I'm having fun doing whatever strikes my fancy at a given moment.

@Mokuba Okay I love that you made this. I really do. I need to talk.

FFXV.. could've used a different/secondary ending, I'll say that much without spoiling anything, but as far as Final Fantasy plots go it has so far been the easiest for me to grasp of the seiries so far (I can't help it if I have a pea-sized brain lol) and is my favorite.

Do you know it has an animation/anime? Watching it beforehand helps to know more about the story you are playing, more about Gladio, Ignis, Prompto, and even Noctis' before the game.

Additionally, and what I REALLY came here to talk about: it also has a movie, "Kingsglaive", if you didn't know (if you did, then that's okay lo). I am absolutely crazy for that movie; I enjoyed it so much! And I don't even know why!! meanwhile everyone else in the fandom be hatin' on it and complaining about my love Nyx Ulric as the main character haha. I think what would've helped the movie out some I think is if Nyx, Libetrus, Crowe, and Pelna (a guy who like literally no one seems to often remember; poor thing), and even some of the other Glaive had gotten backstories in the movie. There is SO MUCH on wiki wrote about the Glaive! I read it on Nyx Ulric's profile on wiki and... wow I fell so in love.

Nyx Ulric, such a sweetheart, went through so much for King Regis and the people, and his homeland (which I think also should've been showed beforehand! in a tiny official image I found it was beautiful, green/foresty and had a lovely river running throughout it) and for what? o-o I really just wish they would've told more on him actually in the movie and maybe even had included a lover? I'm SUCH a sucker for romance, especially the kind that involves any characters that seem in much need of a pat on the back, a hug or a kiss which they NEVER SEEM TO GET, not just in writing somewhere on the internet.

@Mokuba About the game? Idk if there's too much, left to say but there is another animation I forgot about, for Ardyn Izunia. I haven't even watched that one yet, but I seen his gameplay, so... lol, practically already know his backstory.

The movie is.. so good though! Sad that things couldn't have gotten more in-depth for Nyx, Libertus, Crowe, and Pelna, since they were practically all four like siblings. It even mentions on wiki that Libetrus and Nyx talked of opening a bar and grill later on (before the war).
