So I like dragons. They are cool.
I want to read about them more, please.

Recommend stories that you've read?

I'll start -

Marie Brennan series - The Memoirs of Lady Trent. Basically lady David Attenborough that studies dragons.

The Past is the Present - Fanfiction for 'how to train your dragon' but set in modern times where dragons are considered wild beasts.
Toothless had a bond with Hiccup that was unusual even among the Vikings and their dragons. Centuries later, that bond still pulls at him. Not Romance

I remember reading The Last Dragon Chronicles when I was younger and loving it. The first three books are, in my opinion, the best of the series. After book three everything gets very crazy. The same author also has another series, Erth Dragons which seems to be more dragon-centric. I haven't read it, so I can't speak to its quality.

A great novel series is the Temeraire-series by Naomi Novik. It's alternative history about the Napoleonic Wars, except with dragons. These dragons are basically giant sapient flying warships, bound to a human captain.

It's really good. Haven't read it in a while, nor have I read the entire series yet, but I'll definitly catch up to it at some point.

Depending on your age (or willingness to skip portions), the Dragonriders of Pern series is classic for a reason. Not a spoiler to say that the dragons are intelligent and telepathic and work closely with humans.

Just be aware that some of the books do, for reasons unknowable to me, contain what we'll call "adult scenes". I mostly just skip 'em and I've never felt lost plot-wise on the far side.

The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini is a good series. It involves dragon riders, magic, and other fantasy creatures like elves and dwarves.

Wings of Fire also seems popular, though I never finished reading them. They're more aimed at younger readers compared to the first series I mentioned.

I LOVE dragon books, they're what I look for when I'm looking to pick up something new.

Ones I've read that I recommend:
 • Dragonsong series by Anne McCaffrey (3 books, side series to her larger Pern series)
 • Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly (Imo better appreciated when you aren't in your teens or early 20s. It's a series, but I only recommend the first book; huge trigger warnings for the sequels, they are DRASTICALLY different from the first book.)
 • Dragonslayer series by Duncan M. Hamilton (3 books)

On my shelf that I haven't gotten to yet:
 • The Awakening by Nora Roberts
 • Novice Dragoneer by E.E. Knight
 • The Dragon Keeper by Robin Hobb

Currently I'm reading His Majesty's Dragon and it's a lot of fun, lol.

A lot on this list are more aimed towards adult readers, but I believe Novice Dragoneer and the Dragonsong series are YA books.

I haven't read it yet, but the Age of Fire series my E. E. Knight sounds interesting to me. Though I've hear some people say that it's a bit dark.

One of Robin Hobb's book series has dragons in it.

The Rainwild Chronicles, there's 4 books in the series.

caveat to say that I've read other Robin Hobb series, namely the books in her Farseer series, and one or two in her Tawny Man series and the Fitz and the fool, but I haven't read this particular series though.

I love, love Robin Hobb's books though and would recommend reading pretty much any of her books. All of the separate trilogies, the Farseer series, the Fitz and the Fool, Tawny Man, Rainwild Chronicles are set in the same universe though so i'm not sure how well reading them out of order is.

Though the Rainwild Chronicles, just based on the fact that dragons have long since become legend/associated with myth by the beginning of the Farseer series, I'm guessing are prequels.

It starts off with hatchlings cracking out of eggs and the males go straight to killing each other. Once only one male is left, the female hatchlings just... sing about how they want to be married one day? And the male is taught that he'll be a great fighter? But NOT the females, no no, that's males-only. It kept laying on thick the weirdly sexist views on dragon families, which is its own problem, but is also the most boring take on dragons I've ever read. It really baffled me how the author had a foreward talking about how he wanted to write from a new perspective, an animal, and then... wrote that. I stepped away from it a bit, came back to it a few hours later wanting to give it another chance, and not 30 seconds later returned it to the library. You might not have the same opinion, maybe the story on the whole will have just what you're looking for, but... check it out from the library rather than buy it. Especially if you already have some hesitancies toward trying it. (I'm hoping Novice Dragoneer is better. I received it as a gift before I found out how much I disliked Dragon Champion, the first Age of Fire book.)
