TOPIC | brain is buzzing about httyd again
(this is mostly copy pasted from discord but i need to get the rant out of my system i need interaction about it) part 1 : Toothless' Design I was rewatching some clips of the final battle from httyd1, looking for visual references really showing that stabilizing fin in action. Loved that about model 1 Toothless, the prominence of the fins. It's such an excellent detail in his design, tbh. Short and broad wings for immense power generated as quickly as possible allowing for maximum acceleration. The two separated tail fins which provide some stability but moreso control and maneuverability at high speeds as they act like a pair of secondary wings, for even sharper roll and yaw. And the stabilizing fin, just like a bird's tail, allowing for even greater stability and control at speed. mmhmhmmhmh its so GOOD | part 2 : Slow i jsut realized something that made the sequels feel really off to me. I even remember thinking while watching the chase in httyd3.. why aren't they outspeeding the bulky heavy deathgrippers with ease? Weaving through the mountains (which is apparently what's keeping him from catching up) doesn't even need to be a thing at all, make the mountains too far away to be viable, the ACTUAL issue is that they cant fire at her without hurting her, the mountains doesnt need to be a thing. and also why are they so close to the ground in the first place? put them in the sky, they are sky dragons. At least understand why the light fury looks the way she does before trying to change it. it's not a bunch of feminine anthropomorphic stereotypes (this time). She has large eyes because she's a cousin species to the night fury who also has large eyes because they are based on birds of prey. (Toothless has changed a lot). She has a large round forehead because she is uniquely based on the beluga whale and their sonar, an adaptation that would make their easier mode of cloaking via heat even more effective, they're even stealthier, but during the day time, when a dragon as small as them would be otherwise quite vulnerable. Their natural coloration helps them blend in the clouds and sky, very common in the ocean, their seemingly preferred habitat given their presence in the hidden world. She has small hands because she doesn't need large claws for grappling. I assume that they also make use of the iconic dive but less dramatically, more like a pelican stunning fish to scoop up. the white color also helps her prolong avoiding detection from below, the same way marine animals do. perhaps she uses that hypothetical sonar to scout for schools of fish while hiding in the clouds where the fish and larger can's see her idk point is, her design is good actually, eat dirt. i didnt like it either until i like. bothered to think about it from an ecological perspective she is good and i love her also male light furies literally exist in the movie lmao edit: this post! i jsut realized something that made the sequels feel really off to me. Toothless never feels fast in the sequels
night furies thats their thing! they are stealthy and they're fast, the design sells it perfectly i mean for F@KS sake the way they attack is exactly like peregrine falcons. they don't need brutal strength or razor sharp talons because what they do is divebomb their targets, using their fire blasts more to stun than to incinerate. this is everyone's favorite example for a reason. when aiming for larger prey at least.

part 3 : Light Fury Re/Design

I keep seeing these outlandish redesigns of the light fury and its funny and frustrating that not a single one of them appears to consider anything but aesthetic. you gotta think about adaptation and fitness, because the actual designers did and that's what gives the dragons their realism and believability, you can't cut it on looks alone. That's really interesting I didn't notice the speed changes specifically I just knew something bothered me!

Good point on the light fury design but what do you think about how much Toothless has changed? I think a lot of the changes to Toothless are a bit strange idk.

@Doodlepede

I really don’t want this to sound aggressive, I just get excited at talking about creature design. Please tell me if I accidentally sounded to blunt or anything.

Since I’m curious to hear from a perspective other than my own, would you mind a friendly debate about the Light Fury’s creature design? From my own pov (admittedly with my own biases, I dislike the changes to Toothless), her design doesn’t make sense from an ecological perspective, so I’d like to discuss it without any salt, since I feel like the other attempts I’ve had talking about it have gone Dead Sea salinity.
I have my own opinions on the concept art book explanation of “She needed to be graceful and delicate bc she’s female” but that’s not the point of this discussion, so ignore my ramble in the cut-through text.

Anyways help, I’ve been listening to nothing except the Httyd 1 soundtrack and the Hades soundtrack for the past day.

I'm just glad to see someone else likes the light fury. Everyone's always complaining about her. Though I actually don't care about any of the "ecology" stuff, I just like my fair princess sparkle dragon.

And I think the way she disappears, using her fire to superheat her scales, is such a cool and unique idea.

I was disappointed with the night light coloring though. I have the art book and there were so many cool ideas in there, I don't know why they just made them look like tux kittens. Maybe because the toys are easy to make, I dunno.

On your note about their eyes being based on birds of prey, I stopped a moment to wonder why they have slitted pupils. This is usually a trait for animals that are close to the ground or exposed to changes in light level. With the latter, we have night furies, okay. Those are nocturnal.

But what about the light fury? Well, there is one genus of bird, with only three species, that has slitted pupils. Why? They hunt for fish, close to the surface, and need that adaptation to protect their eyes against glare on the water. They also have other REALLY odd adaptations, but that is neither here nor there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rynchops
Anyway, it makes perfect sense for fish eaters to have eyes like that, even the diurnal ones.

And yes, someone else who loves that amazing stabilizer action. A little pet peeve of mine is that many flying fantasy creatures look unrealistic for their lack of one. Looking at you, Flight Rising.
It's so good to see such realistic and dynamic flight like in the first movie (can't speak much for the later ones, have only seen them once)

Personally, model 1 is my favorite. he's absolutely adorable and totally fearsome. There's something so Sharp about him that we never really see again in the sequels, and i miss it a lot. All these little mannerisms that make him so believeable. he's not a goofy funny dog/cat, he's a dragon, a wild animal. Dragons aside, the thing about httyd1 that really captivated me is that Hiccup starts out as a pathetic little guy, but becomes a hero thanks to his empathy, determination, and cleverness. It's a very David-vs-Goliath kind of story. The fact that subsequent movies turned Hiccup into a generic action hero who wins the day by being the Special Dragon Man is such a disservice to his character.

I’m not going to go on a full rant about it, but YES FINALLY someone who loves some good flight physics. When I see some aspect of flight animated well it makes me happy, and movie 1 Toothless looked so fast and agile. He moved like a fighter jet and I loved it! His flight actually looked believable (it still isn’t possible for a variety of reasons), but it LOOKED real

I don’t know if becoming a pilot made me start picking apart flight in everything from “Hollywood not understanding airplanes” to “this flying creature doesn’t have the right wing loading to physically fly :(“ but sometimes I gotta suspend my disbelief, lol. As an aside, the fact you used the terms roll and yaw specifically fills me with utter glee

Love this analysis! I watched all of the HTTYD movies and shows as they released growing up so the series is special to me. I didn’t like the third movie much either but more for storytelling reasons. The ending just felt too, stereotypical to me? I don’t know what it is about movies, but sequels are always terrible compared to the first one. There are things I did really enjoy about it though.

Come to think of it, I should probably come up with a more in-depth analysis on why I don’t enjoy the third movie as much. It’s been quite a few years since I watched them though ;;
