If I understand correctly, the achievement "Checkmate" unlocks if you have a full set of 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, a king and queen of both colors.
I've met the requirements (

You aren't doing anything wrong. Certain achievements (particularly achievements that require you to collect certain items) are lagged right now. The developers are still looking into it. The achievements
work, it could just take several days to a week or more for them to finally register. Just keep all your pieces and you should eventually get it. :)
(Keep them in your main Hoard though, don't put them in your Vault. The achievement system is not yet set up to go looking in your Vault for achievement items.)
