I've looked around a little, but I can't find what I want to know about the difference between keeping items in your hoard or in your vault. What's the point of having a vault and why should I (or shouldn't I) keep things in it? Thanks!

@NeonSnowflake The main thing is you can store money there that can't be spent until you manually take it out. Otherwise it's mainly for storage, I keep my awakened familiars there and my ones that I don't have the dragons for in my regular inventory. I also keep items for Swipp swaps in my vault instead, and pretty much anything that I want to keep but aren't using immediately.

The most important point is you won't be able to 'accidentally' sell or use anything that's in the Vault, including currencies. This includes the sneaky Crim; she won't get anything from your Vault. And you can't sell things to the system while they are in the Vault too.
I've seen too many people accidentally trade valuable items such as scrolls to Crim, or when they want to convert a bunch of food but sold them instead. Vault prevents these things from happening again.
