TOPIC | Noobie Who Needs Some Help~
Hello, everyone! I have yet to introduce myself, which I'll do in a moment. I am a few months old (FR speaking) and have yet to learn a lot of things.
I am very curious in lore but was wondering how to start off. You can't spell curious without, er... C, which stands for confused! So, I am curious all the while confused.
Leading off of that, I've explored a few different ways to make the dragon descriptions more interesting text wise. There's bold , italics, and even underline! But other than that, I'm daunted... I've seen a lot of experienced lore-writers have very abstract and, honestly speaking, amazing dragon descriptions. I was wondering if anyone could help me with that.
Another thing: What are Hatcheries in general and how to start/create one? I'm interested and intrigued, but not sure what they are! I would love some help~

The lore that you give to your dragons can be whatever you want for it, but when it comes to coding there are many templates out there as well as a lot of other things you can do yourself with coding

A hatchery would generally be a thread that is made to breed and sell dragons, usually in the dragons for sale forums. The more successful ones usually invest a lot in pairs that would likely be popular, but aside from those they generally don’t make a ton of money

I’ll include a couple of links to help you get started on this stuff, but if you have other questions about these then feel free to ping/PM me

Welcome to Flight Rising! This is the perfect place to ask curious questions.

For the absolute basics, I recommend Crowe's BBCode Compendium as an excellent beginner's guide! I personally learned a lot just by experimenting with dragon bios myself, based on the guides I read. Get creative and play around with the formatting as much as you like!

Next, a lot of players will create and share "templates" - blank coding layouts that allow you to fill in the blanks with your own lore and images. You can find a lot of these in the Creative Corner forum, including the layout I use!

It's, er...a bit daunting if you aren't familiar with the code involved, so unless you're willing to dive right in, I suggest starting with smaller templates like these! Anything that helps you organize your thoughts and ideas can help, really.

(That being said, if you're interested in the layout I use, feel free to PM me with questions! It was a personal collaboration with a friend of mine, so it's not the most broadly accessible code in the world.)

As for the writing itself, you have a lot of freedom to play with! Besides the lorebooks and the world map, the site is pretty vague about what does and doesn't exist in Sornieth. You have the freedom to decide who your dragons are, how they feel, and where they live.

As long as it doesn't defy the ToU or Rules and Policies (nothing graphic or explicit, basically), sky's the limit on who or what your dragons can be! Heck, they might not even be a dragon! Experiment with locations, relationships, and character concepts that speak to you! Don't worry too much about finishing everything right away; it's for fun, not for a deadline!

If you're looking for inspiration, you can go back to Creative Corner or visit Dragon Share to see what other users have come up with for their own dragons! While I cannot recommend stealing someone's idea wholesale, try jotting down small concepts and character traits you like (e.g. "this dragon wears a cursed suit of armor!" "this dragon may seem grumpy, but they've dedicated their life to protecting this hatchling!") and mix them with new ideas that you want to explore for yourself!

Some personal (actually finished) highlights from my own lair include;
  • An ancient statue whose sacred grove seems to disappear and reappear, only showing itself to weary travelers in need of rest.
  • A monstrous cryptid, haunting a twisted forest and its inhabitants with gleeful malice.
  • A young seer who was blessed with foresight, only to find that their visions were a terrible curse.
  • A totally adorable doll who is definitely not haunted. Nope, no sirree. Not one bit.
  • Dirteater. He likes to eat dirt. That is all.

Lastly, a hatchery is a forum thread (typically in Dragons for Sale) where someone advertises their hatchlings from specific mating pairs, usually with a specific theme in mind. Since pretty dragons are easy to come across at low prices, I wouldn't recommend them as a reliable source of long-term income.

I personally run a joint hatchery with the same friend as before, but we mostly do it for the fun of making pretty dragons and sharing their hatchlings!

I hope these answers were helpful, and feel free to PM me if you have follow-up questions! Other than that, Help Center is a great place to get answers for questions like these. Have a great night!
