TOPIC | Which Program?? (art)
Hi there! I've made a couple of accents so far and I'm in the middle of making another one. However, the art program I use came with my laptop and it's pretty simple, honestly. It's been exhausting making accents because it keeps crashing and it doesn't even have a clipping tool, which forces me to erase lines and shadows by hand. I'm definitely not going to use a program that requires me to pay, so please let me know which art program you think is best for making accents. I know a couple already, like FireAlpaca, Paint Shop, and Photoshop, but just don't know which one to use or if there are any better programs. Thanks!

I use FireAlpaca and pretty much swear by it. It's free to use and very flexible, and works great for accent making! You may need to play with the brushes a bit to see which ones work for you, though.

Esme, a very red and Plague-themed Skydancer. A medallion depicting the Plaguebringer in profile.

I use PaintShop Pro, which does cost money, but a fraction of what Photoshop costs, especially when you grab it while it's on sale.

Really, though, FireAlpaca, GIMP, Krita, PaintShop Pro, Paint Tool SAI... There are so many options that are free or cheap, that also do everything Photoshop can do, that the only bad choice is Photoshop itself, because it's not so much better than the others to ever be worth the price they charge for it.

Try out all the free ones, like FireAlpaca, Krita and GIMP, and see which one you get on with. If none of them feel right to you, get the free trials for PaintShop Pro and Paint Tool SAI and give them a try, as their purchase prices are reasonable. Only if all of those options turn out not to work for you, then look at Photoshop. But in all likelihood, you'll find a free/cheap program that does everything you want.

Krita is basically Photoshop but free and is great once you get used to some of the phrasing oddities it has. FireAlpaca is also great and may be easier to use.

What is best for you is something you need to find out for yourself and not something anyone else can tell you. We can give you suggestions, but ultimately only you know what program will work best for you.

Except Photoshop. Don't pay for Photoshop. It's a massive rip off that is only getting worse with time.

FireAlpaca and Krita are probably your best free options, either one would work out for you. Download both and try them out!

Paint Tool SAI and Clip Studio Paint both have free trials, and I would recommend trying them out if you're able/willing to buy programs in the future. SAI has a great brush tool (the engine is different from other programs and it's hard to replicate), and CSP has incredible features in general (including 3D modeling and an easy-to-use resource library) and occasionally goes on sale for 50% off.

GIMP has a significant learning curve. I never draw with it, but I keep it around for editing or animation.
