TOPIC | Just trying to get started: Art Shops!
1 2
Hello everyone! I'm very new to this site and I am already liking it a lot even all by my lonesome, which is always a good sign! That means as long as I muster up my courage to speak in the forums, the experience will probably get more engaging! I generally have a hard time getting myself to speak in forums, but here I want to try and get better at being more social and not getting too anxious about how and when people reply.

Regardless of all that, as much as I would just like to talk (which feel free to do for sure) I was wondering if anyone could help me get a rundown of how to set up an art shop/how the online economy is at the current time? I am an artist and mostly just am trying to find more excuses to draw dragons, I feel like this would be a nice place for that!

Obviously if this is not in the right forum for this feel free to tell me off about it haha, but I find that conversing with others in the community is the best way to feel more secure about forum posting in the future!

Thanks for reading, and I hope you are all doing well!

Hey! Welcome to FR. I hope you're having a nice time. c:

I think this is best posted in the help forum, but heyo, who's counting? XD

As for an art post my advice would be...

- Keep it simple! Don't bog down your first post with paragraphs of role play or flavourtext. If people have to scroll 3 times to get to the prices and examples it might put them off! It does me, at least, but I'm grumpy, so take that as you will!

- Have your prices posted clearly with what currencies you accept! Post them either alongside the drawing type, or in a list with the corresponding example types clearly labelled. Headshots/busts/fullbodies, levels of colouring such as sketches/flats/shaded and whether backgrounds are included if you're offering a variety of options!

- Keep examples on the post itself! It's a bit of a turn off to have to go offsite to see art examples, especially since FR has a confirmation page for leaving.

- Check to see what others are doing! Don't take my advice as gospel, what I find irritating others may enjoy, but I've definitely noticed that artshops without examples end up with fewer replies.

I can't speak for the economy though, sorry! It's different for art and in-game items and I haven't kept up in a bit, so others might be better placed to help you there c:

I hope this helped a little and welcome again!
I hope this helped a little and welcome again!
Thanks so much, I am currently very much enjoying everything here! And oops! Didn't even see a help forum, oh well. I suppose it still is a "general" discussion right? Haha. But maybe you're right though, I should start simple, I don't need to set up a whole fancy html built up shop, maybe just start small, test the waters and things. I'm always afraid I'll overcharge and sound like a cocky snob somehow, even though rationally I know its probably not true. I have a general idea of prices and things (I think.) Good advice on the 'no going off site' bit though, I was contemplating that one. It is easier to just send to a different site, but it is more enticing to see it right there. Thanks for your reply! I'll try and get a simple one up next week sometime. Maybe hopefully. I'm posting that statement here in hopes that it'll make me actually do it!

You just post a threat in either Art Forums or Creative Corner and sometimes you can get a good idea as to what people are willing to pay :)

I completely agree with starting small, not overcrowding it with too much text. You can always add some fancyness if you like how the shop is doing and have spare time :)

Clear examples and prices, very important. Take into consideration difficult and detailed skins/clothes! How much price would increase with such complexity additions.

For prices, it really depends what you will choose to do, will it be recoloured bases, signatures, or will it be custom one of a kind works with backgrounds and such. Feel free to show some examples if you want, and what price you were thinking, I could tell you my opinion! (I'm an artist myself so I have a LITTLE clue what I would want to get :'))

@Skuttlefish I want to reccommend my favorite "How to Make an Art Shop" by Foff: SO YOU WANNA OPEN AN ART SHOP, YOUNGIN? It's very silly, easy to read, and even provides a few code templates for anyone to use that are clear and easily customizable! Additionally I'm going to quote from Yeti's Art Pricing Guide
there are lots of reasons why having an accurate price can help both you and your fellow artists:

your art will be more appealing to others if you don't underestimate it's worth
undercharging lowers the bracket for other artists like you!
you will get more commissions if you know how to price your stuff accordingly
more commissions = more dough = cool & fun for everybody

My personal reccommendation for pricing is to take what you think feels fair and then push yourself out of your comfort zone!

Thanks everyone for the replies! I think I’ll read through everything there is to read through and start with something small. And perhaps in the near future here (or in the art forums) I’ll post some examples! I just gotta finish my finals first, which thankfully will be done by tomorrow!

Thanks again! If anyone wants their dragons sketched and done as examples, I’ll gladly do them for free as payment for helping me set up haha

@Mahogi Hello! I know its been a while, just been slightly busy! But I was thinking of doing stuff kinda like this, with cheaper options for just headshots. Though I've been thinking I may be pushing myself too hard if I offer stuff like this, but I do like doing them! I have an idea for prices, for full body human commissions I do charge almost 50 USD, but I have an easier time with dragons often so depending on complexity I'm sure it would be around that price range maybe more, and from research it seems like the conversion is around 1USD:100g:100,000t. Edit: Oh right, and as for the difference between lineart prices and whatnot I'm not really sure, I've never charged an accurate price difference for something like that, so I am struggling a tiny bit
