So I've been here for awhile--in fact, I wanna say Baldwin was introduced within the first year I was here. However, I haven't messed with him. Like, at all. And now there's been tons of updates, tons of stuff to create... and I have no idea where to even begin. I've come across a few guides that might be helpful, but they all assume that I've already started doing something or already have some materials on hand. At this point I'm overwhelmed and ready to completely give up on Baldwin and just resign myself to buying his stuff off the Auction House. What do I need to do to make this work for me? Can someone break it down in really, really simple terms, or step by step, if that's even possible?

the easiest way to start is to just start melting things. transmute things. any spare apparel, familiars, trinkets, materials, and food items, you can transmute them in the cauldron and get materials.
once you reach lv 3, go through the list of things you are able to make, and pick one you want to make. either you can make it right away, or you need materials, if you need materials you go find them (or make them, in case you need things made through baldwin - beakers pop up in a lot of recipes), and once you can make the thing you make the thing.
and then you either pick something else to make or you melt down things again until your cauldron levels up and you get new things to make, rinse and repeat.
a good goal to work towards is to brew a Bogsneak Egg. it's fairly high level and requires a lot of materials, so it's a great long-term goal for when you're just starting out.
my personal goal for Baldwin is to always have enough materials to brew every fest skin and a prismatic token for each fest. it's surprisingly hard to keep up with the materials it takes bc I don't coli grind all that often and don't have a lot of food or apparel items to spare. so far I've managed, though!

@Cerberus38 Baldwin's is all about persistence, that's the best way I can put it. I pretty much have something melting constantly even if I'm not targeting anything to make. You can put an item in his cauldron to melt directly from your Hoard, and the Hoard filters let you pick out items to melt down that have no other uses.
Baldwin will notify you in your Alerts every time the cauldron is finished, collect and toss something else in right after it. Basic item melts I think give you 15 xp points each, as your level builds more recipes will unlock.
Food makes Goo, Materials make Ooze, Trinkets make Sludge, Apparel makes Slime, and Familiars make Muck. The color is a random weighted outcome, with green goo/ooze/sludge the most common and grey slime and copper muck likewise.
It's a long term thing but I have my levels maxed out with him, I can't remember how long that took minus the time between increases to Baldwin's max. You just have to have that cauldron bubbling constantly and the levels will build up for you.

Nest Rentals! I offer Fire nests here at 2kt a pair, no lunch boxes needed. Warning that I am a 12-hr shift night worker and might miss a day on incubation here and there. :(
