“...Is this thing on?”
“I’m like, 90% sure it is.” An Imperial, soft pink in color and wearing a large, starry cloak, dug around in a mass of gears, tubes of magical energy, and wires, her head disappearing within and muffling her voice.
“Then, you said I should just have to speak into this cone thing here, right?” A pink and green Spiral, wearing a gauzy dress and several pieces of distinct but carefully-coordinated jewelry, was curled around a large desk that supported an amalgamation of tubes, capped with a strange, cone-like object dotted with holes. The tubes wound around the walls of the Observatory, merging with each other and splitting off until they passed outside through the walls, (roughly) evenly spaced around the top of the tower. They were made of a brassy metal, and looked fairly new - there wasn’t too much clutter surrounding them yet.
“Hello?” the Spiral unwound her body slightly to call into the cone. “Can anyone hear me?” She paused and cocked her head, listening. “I didn’t hear anything,” she said, unwinding slightly more to slide towards her companion.
“Yeah, neither did I. Hang on…” Shuffling could be heard from inside the pile; her body wiggled slightly as she maneuvered. There was a clanking sound, and then a hum filled the air as a soft pink glow spread along some of the pipes.
“Aha! Got it!” She extracted herself from the machinery (perhaps a bit quicker than she should have, but nothing seemed to break) and grinned. “Try it now!”
The Spiral straightened up as much as a Spiral could, a grin spreading on her own face, and wound back on herself so that she was face-to-cone with the strange mechanism.
“Hello!” A loud screeching filled the air, and both the dragons winced. The Spiral pulled back a bit, cleared her throat and tried again.
“Hello, everyone!” Much to their elation, the sound of the Spiral’s voice could be heard echoing through the air outside. She gasped, whipping her head around to face the Imperial. “It’s working!”
“My name is Mana,” she said, turning back to the cone, “and you are listening to the first ever Observatory broadcast of a… what was it called again?” The last part was slightly fainter, as she turned back to her companion.
“A radio!”
“Yes, yes, a radio! That was Stardawn, by the way, lovely engineer friend. Anyway, with this lovely new invention, we’ll be able to play music for all you Starfall-goers allll festival! And also provide some commentary.” Mana did her best to verbally wink. “An event like this wouldn’t be anything without music, after all! But, between the two of us, we only know so many songs - certainly not enough to fill out an entire festival. So, that’s where you, our lovely listeners, come in! We’ll be sending out some little Fallen Streak friends - feel free to write song suggestions or song-playing enchantments down and send them up! We’ll be playing your suggestions all festival - and there might even be something in it for you!”
PART TWO (9/17)
The sound of the music pauses for a moment, leaving heads turned towards the Observatory in confusion. It doesn't take long, however, for the broadcast to resume - this time featuring the voices of Mana and Stardawn.
"Hey everybody! We just wanted to thank you all for the amazing suggestions we've had so far! So many suggestions, that we've been playing almost non-stop since we got our first ones!"
"You also seem to be doing quite the wonderful job of upholding the spirit of Arcane, from what we've heard! Gotta love all those rituals and eldritch ter- oh, right, you said you weren't summoning those, my bad."
"Anyway, we'd just like to remind you all that while absolutely adore your enthusiasm in coming right up here to submit your songs in person, and we love giving you the chance to test out this wonderful new contraption for yourselves, this is technically not allowed, particularly in the case of you out-of-flighters, and Stardawn is a bit beside herself making sure nobody knocks anything over. She does that enough herself."
"I can't help it! My tail is too long! Why are we over here in one corner?"
"Because that's where the equipment is, dear."
There is a distinct lack in conversation for several seconds.
"Continuing on, we'd like to remind you that we sent out the Streaks for a reason; please utilize them!" Mana says, seemingly unfazed by the silence.
"Uh, there were, uh, some- some complaints about them swarm- swarming...?" Stardawn's voice is faint in the background.
"Oh, dear. We'll work on that, dear listeners. If you experience this issue, it can be easily resolved by giving one or a few some paper scraps to 'deliver'. They'll get the hint. Though, you might as well give us some songs while you're at it, then! Until next time!"
"ThishasbeenARCN011!" Stardawn blurts out, suddenly much closer-sounding, before the broadcast goes back to playing music.
PART THREE (9/23)
The music pauses for the second time since it started.
"Hellooooo, everybody! Stardawn here! I'm temporarily taking over as main MC for this broadcast. We've gotten so many submissions since the beginning of this week! However, uh..."
There's a bit of shuffling.
"Well, uh, you see, a few of our recent submitters have been a bit... off-putting? We got this real spooky note, and there were a couple dragons who snuck in and put on a cacophony playlist while we weren't looking - sorry for the lack of warning about that one, by the way, we've started to send out streaks with earplugs - and then one just poofed in, handed us this weird disk thing with runes on it, and then poofed back out?
"Now, that didn't bother me too much - trust me, we've got a few clanmates, yes Yache I'm talking to you, and when you're in Runesworn you just really get numb to the whole thing? But poor Mana here was, uh, a bit startled."
"SHE JUST APPEARED RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!"
"...Very startled. So, uh, maybe don't do that again? You're going to ruin Mana's reputation-"
"Why would you say that!?"
PART FOUR (9/29)
With the first rays of the rising sun, the music from the Observatory begins to calm, and then slowly fade out. A few moments pass after the silence settles, and then comes the expected crackle as the music is replaced with voices.
"Thank you, all, for joining us for this year's Starfall Celebration!" Mana's voice is sleepy but joyful as it crackles through the air.
"Yes, thank you!" Stardawn sounds a bit more chipper. "We really loved having you all here in the Isles, and hearing your tastes in music - it was a learning experience, and I really enjoyed it."
"And we hope that you all enjoyed it as much as we did. There was so much variety in the suggestions we got - hopefully you all discovered something new to enjoy as well!"
"That saaaid," Stardawn says, "we should reeeally get going, cuz Dad's gonna be here soon, and well... let's just say this isn't the first time I've done something was maybe just a tiny little bit against the rules involving delicate Observatory equipment."
"You did not inform me of this!" Mana seems to find it quite funny.
"Yes, well, couldn't have you backing out, could I? Thank you for listening, everyone, have a good life an' all that, kthanksbye!"
And with that, the audio cuts out, leaving the Isles just a bit more quiet than they were before.
Hello everyone, and welcome to this year's Starfall even from yours truly! Stardawn and Mana here are super excited to take everyone's suggestions, so what are you waiting for - show us your ultimate Starfall playlists!
