xxxxxxxxxxx An end.. The first to make claim to the arid land that cut into limestone and sand was not what anyone would call brave, merely foolish. xxxxxxxxxxx A middle.. Still, the taint of poison claimed many of the hatchlings in each nest, and those too old or too young to fight it off completely. Realizing that their harsh upbringing and battle scars had saved their WarriorKing, Seer, and Guard, all those able were sent into the wilds of the Coliseum to achieve their own, or die to the poison.

Day 2: Material! LAZING ILLUSIONS (Lightning territory)

Left to bake, blotched and banded tan and navy scales with wispy cords of summery yellow shimmered briefly in the noonday sun. If there was a hotter place or time short of the lava pools coatls were so fond of, the basking youth had yet to find it and grimaced at the thought he might one day. Mirage had been aptly named by a mother with too much snark. A mother that had succumb to the Fate so many of his clan worked hard to avoid. The shifting and reflection of colors gave off the illusion the dragon was several feet from where he lazed, huffing and annoyed. Moments like these, the wildclaw wished he were as strong as the Prince's Blades and Guard already; both to avoid these doldrum moments and to already have the ability to shift into a humanoid form. Young dragons or not, frankly, would make the three of them trying to squeeze under the small outcropping of rock for shade far easier as they would all be a good deal smaller.

A chirpy voice came from his right as Figment's head popped up slightly above his own and came to rest on it, "Can't we just attack them?" Where Mirage's colors could disguise or distract in deepest night or full blistering sun, the mage and healer of the trio could only hope to hide in either deep water, her precious summer skies, or once the sun had begun to sink into the horizon. Unless she hoped to approach by sky and stay there, Figment had little hope of stealth and had to rely on distraction. Distraction that hopefully did not distract her in turn.

Zoning in on the shifting figures below and those guarding them, a clawed hand nearly as large as Figment nudged the brilliant lapis head back down behind the edge of scrubs and rock. "No chance of that working just yet. We're supposed to be scouting..." Allure's voice was deep even when she tried to whisper reprovingly at her companions. "Besides, I don't trust this weather to last..." Rain, while a blessing at first to cool the skin, made her anxious. When it had rained, from what she had gathered from her elders, it did so in long and wild torrents that flooded much of the area and watering holes like this would be the first to overflow. The very air had been sticky and sweat had clung to them even in the shade for hours. While the sky overhead was blistering it had been growing darker and at the edges for some time.

Illusionist, healer, and stormblade, the trio had not known each other well before they had bundled up what supplies they could safely carry the morning before and gradually left the safety of clan territory. Safety, ha! Beyond what food they had managed to stuff into their bellies before they left or hunt on their way to find camp, all they had remaining come the following afternoon were potions and tonics that clinked in each of their bags. At last they had found a watering hole, but it was not without its dangers and was in high use until long after the sun would cool. That left them with either attacking, trying to make peace with those hauling water below, or waiting until dusk to sneak in and refill their waterskins.

No accounting for luck, Mirage mused as he stretched out his legs and curved his spine with a snap, pop, and a sigh before curling in as close as he dared once more. "It's too hot," the wildclaw huffed out, "You're huge! Spread your wings and give us shade!" Allure resettled obsidian wings, that brandished feathered markings like eyes that always watched, without comment. If she really had to point out yet one more time today that such a frivolous thing would reveal their position, she was going to roll over and sit on him. Besides! She was only just barely not a hatchling and had freshly molted into fine metallic scales. They were itchy and the combination of metal and the deep dark black of them surely made her even hotter than they were. It wasn't her fault they were so much smaller than her and older too. Compared to an adult even she was quite small!

Gear was snatched quickly and re-bundled to their sides as the pat-pat-pats of rain in thick drops began to hiss as it reached the searing sand outside their shade. In moments the ground was painted in wet circles that stained the sand and rock dark. Lightning forking toward a rod mired far too near the edge of this little oasis and surged to the wet ground. Realizing a second and third rod were close by the trio understood their little camp had never been safe, more so now. Allure launched into the sky, giving up on subtlety, leaving her companions to stare at her in a mix of wonder and horror respectively. "Lightning never strikes the same place twice!" she called back, making Mirage sputter as Figment in her wisdom zipped after her into the warring down and updrafts of the storm. "B-Not if you fly straight into it, you great flapping target!" The wildclaw swore because soon they would be out of sight. He jolted as another lightning strike hit nearby and in his panic the strap on his bag snapped as he took a running start to claim what winds he could. His eyes went wide in alarm, clawed hands fumbling to catch, just as the wind tore and pulled at his wings, shooting him upwards. Not used to flying in such foolish conditions he could only watch as the bag hit the rocky overhang below and he was swept away. Powerful wing beats kept him from spiraling end over end as he did his best to follow his team. "This is not the kind of luck I wanted!" Mirage bellowed but the words were lost to the boom and crack of the storm.

*Day 7: A SHINING CROWN

Mirage was ecstatic, not only were they making progress and eventually recouped his loss of potions but they had gradually, albeit painfully increased in numbers! They had been alarmed to find a brilliantly glowing but very tiny egg hidden among their take that had eventually hatched as they found shelter for the night. What they were going to do with a tiny fae hatchling, he wasn't sure, but Crown sure was a chatty little thing. It only seemed right to carry her along for the ride as it didn't appear any fae had been through this part of the slowly deepening forests for some time. Once they saw evidence of forest fires and sparser plants they kept her close to 'guard' their potions.

*Day 10: CRESTING TROUBLE

Allure had grown alarmed and mistrustful of the brash imperial that invited himself along. Crest, all gold and black and gleaming, had become fascinated with her markings and would try to poke them now and then and ask if she could see through them. She didn't see the harm in the small fib that she could, if only to make him think she was watching even while she slept. She did her best to escort him out of the woods, but the damn fool kept following her back, even though he was half her size and only just barely not a hatchling.

Crown had finally stretched out her wings, still the smallest of the lot, and spent most of her time riding on the others when she wasn't perfecting flight. It became obvious the tiny dragon wanted to perfect everything she could possibly learn. When she had proclaimed she wanted to be just like Mirage, the first she had seen on hatching, the group debated. If she had her heart set on being sneaky and illusive like the illusionist, then he would have to teach her.

Halting when it was becoming far too dangerous for fae or imp, and imparting what advise and training they could, the trio escorted the pair back to safety at the edge of the woods, passing on the few potions Crown had safeguarded as a hatchling. Figment, chipper as ever, or trying to be, pointed out, "If you work hard, we might all be lucky enough to see each other again and even find a home back with our clan!" Allure winced and took off back through the trees, hoping that fool idiot imperial stopped following.

Even their goodbyes could not dim Mirage's own happiness. Their latest adventure into the charred growth of trees had finally yielded the skill he had so desired! He could finally shapeshift! He'd spent a good deal of time in his first few battles in a humanoid form, until he realized just how dangerous such soft skin could be and had left the fight bloody and barely conscious. While it had been awesome, the heat of the embers all around him and made him decide to leave such forms to situations where they weren't either being attacked or roasted. Here was almost as bad as the desert they had fled from! Even the scar he'd earned from that encounter had not dampened his enthusiasm. What Allure thought of these new gifts, he didn't know, as he'd yet to see her change. Figment had been delighted, though crushed to learn she lacked as many wings, and had been experimenting as they traveled. The latest had seven sets of different shapes and sizes that gave off wisps of color and sparkled like the night sky!
