A heavyset orange guardian and a dark, spindly fae glanced up at her from the card game they were playing on a splintered wooden table. "Mornin', boss," the guardian called. ____"Mmnh no talk me I'm coffee," Gleis mumbled. She set her mug, lovelingly painted with "#1 Boss," on the table while she rummaged around in a chest. The fae took advantage of the distraction by slipping a few aces into his hand. ____Eventually Gleis retrieved a large tin labeled with a smiling cartoon bean. She pried off the lid and looked inside. And kept looking. The guardian shifted nervously. "Uh, boss-" ____"Who." ____"Huh?" ____The coatl turned her icy gaze from the coffee tin to the guardian. "Who. Used all. My coffee?" ____The guardian, Prusk, sighed deeply. "You did, boss." ____"Impossible!" Gleis spat. "We just stole this last week! Where did it all go?!" ____The fae rolled his eyes. "You drink 8 cups a day. Where d'you think?" ____"Shut it, Abyss. I do not drink eight cups a day," Gleis snarled. "I drink seven, tops. There's no way I burned through this whole tin that quickly. What are we going to do about this?" ____"Could always steal some more," Prusk shrugged. Gleis glared daggers at him, then flinched and raised a hand to her head. "Rrgh, the withdrawl's already setting in," she muttered. "Gods. Fine, we have no choice. Put the cards down and grab something pointy, we're going merchant hunting." ____"And how're we gonna do that?" Prusk huffed, tossing his cards on the table. "The road doesn't exactly get much traffic this time of year. We could sit there all day without seeing a single caravan." ____Gleis growled and drummed her claws on the table. "We won't target the road, then. What are our other options?" ____Prusk scratched his beard. "Hrm... Well, there's that tiny clan to the north, and if we go east far enough we'll eventually hit a big city." ____"There's also the serthis to the south," Abyss buzzed. His voice was high-pitched and droning, like a gnat buzzing in one's ear. ____Gleis nodded. "Yeah, there's always the serthis tribe, too. Or we could camp on the road anyway and hope to get lucky." She paused, head cocked to the side. "So. What should we do?" ____The three sat in silence for a few long moments before Abyss spoke up again. "We could consult the orb." ____Prusk and Gleis both turned to look at him. "We are not asking the orb," Gleis snapped. "That thing is worse than useless." ____"Well, I don't know about that," Prusk hemmed. "It's designed to give advice, isn't it? Why not give it a try?" ____Gleis fluffed up her wings and glared at him. "It's probably cursed, that's why. Honestly, that's the last time I rob a mage..." ____The table settled back into silence, Gleis glowering at the air, Prusk looking bored, and Abyss trying to stealthily tuck the aces back up his sleeves. It was only a matter of time before the coatl caved. ____"Oh, fine," she groaned. "Get out the stupid orb. But if it gets us killed, don't say I didn't warn you." It looked like a gigantic pearl, only with a blue tint and faint iridescence. Gleis cleared her throat and glanced towards Abyss. "So. How do we use it?" ___Abyss squinted at the orb. "I'm... not sure. Maybe we just ask it?" ___"Worth a shot. Orb! Which way should we go to get some coffee?" ___The orb sat idly on the table. Gleis rolled her eyes. "I knew this was a waste of time. Let's just-" ___"You've got [1] Orb Mail." ___Gleis and Prusk yelped and scrambled back from the table. A faint white light had starting pulsing in the center of the orb, almost like a hearbeat. Abyss leaned closer, peering into the dull glow. "Did it just talk?" ___"D... Did it?" Gleis asked, cautiously sliding back into her seat. "Hey, repeat yourself!" ___"You've got [1] Orb Mail." ___The Raiders glanced at each other incredulously. Gleis slumped in her chair. "Well, I'll be damned," she muttered. "Orb, what on Sornieth is orb mail?" ___The orb simply continued to pulse. Gleis gave it a couple moments to respond before throwing her hands up. "Oh, so now it doesn't want to talk." ___"Perhaps it only responds to certain keyphrases," Abyss mused. "Let me try something. Orb, open mail." ___The light vanished. "Opening mail." ___A sudden deep purple glow flooded the orb, casting steep shadows and eerie lighting across the room. Something seemed to shift within its depths, and for a moment Prusk thought he saw a single glowing eye staring back at him. "Gods, turn it off!" he cried, scrambling behind Gleis. ___Gleis jerked around to scold him, only to be cut off by the orb's robotic voice.
Orb says to go east for cool mysterious city. Dragons in cities always have a bunch of stuff you can "borrow", coffee included.
___At the end of the message a little winky face manifested in the center of the light, then faded away. The purple glow receded, leaving the orb dull and lifeless once again. "You've got [0] Orb Mail." ___Gleis eyed it for a moment, but it seemed to have deactivated itself. "Huh. That was... strange." ___"We're not actually going to trust this thing, right?" Prusk asked. "When it was doing... whatever that was, I swear I saw something looking at me inside of the light. This thing, it- it's not natural!" ___"And neither is steel or cloth or any other modern convenience. Just because it's unnatural doesn't mean it's dangerous," Gleis huffed. "Honestly, Prusk, I thought you were supposed to be brave. Grow a spine." ___"So does that mean we're going to the city?" Abyss asked. Gleis seemed to think for a moment, glancing between the orb and the empty coffee tin. "Well, it did make a good point," she shrugged. "Do either of you have a better idea?" ___Prusk looked pleadingly at Abyss, but the fae continued to stare at the orb in silence. Gleis tossed the empty tin back into the chest and fluffed up her wings. "Well then, it looks like we're heading to the city." ___Prusk watched the ground rush away beneath him and stubbornly refused to look at his coworkers. He could already see the edge of the Raiders' territory, which meant they were almost a fifth of the way there. The guardian tugged at the bag slung over his shoulder and grimaced. The orb was tucked inside along with all of their gear. It would be so easy to sever the strap and let the cursed thing fall to its doom... ___"Prusk!" Gleis snapped. The guardian faltered mid wingbeat, nearly falling out of the sky. "What?" he snarled, twisting to look at her. For a moment he panicked, thinking she'd somehow read his thoughts, but her eyes were locked on something below them. He followed her gaze just in time to see a furious banescale come roaring out of the treeline, flames licking at the corners of its mouth. It flipped around midair and launched a fireball at something beneath it. ___The Raiders immediately fell into battle formation, with Prusk in the middle and Gleis and Abyss half-hidden behind his massive wingspan. The banescale didn't even seem to notice them, though; it was fixated on whatever was hiding below it. The air seemed to grow a few degrees colder as Gleis took in the scene. "Prusk," she growled. "Dive bomb that thing." ___"What?! Why?" the guardian cried. ___"Because she's in our territory, stealing our prey! Or are you scared of combat now, too?" ___The guardian bristled at the accusation. He folded his wings and dropped into a death dive, claws fully extended towards the banescale beneath him. It looked up just in time to see the fury in his eyes before he crashed into it, snapping its spine with the sheer force of his impact. Gleis swept past him as it fell limply towards the earth. "Get down here, boys," she called over her shoulder. "Let's see if it had anything worth taking." ___It took Prusk a moment to find a clearing big enough for him to land in. He folded his wings and grumbled below his breath, stalking towards the others. They were huddled around something near the fallen banescale. Abyss glanced up at his approach and shuffled to the side to give him some room. ___In front of them crouched an emaciated mirror, coverd in claw wounds and minor burns. His head was bent submissively, but Prusk recognized desperation in his eyes. He wasn't beaten yet. The mirror seemed to size him up, then turned back to Gleis. "As I was saying, my name is Oakwood," he rasped. "I've been lost in this forest for quite some time. I was trying to make my way to the city when she attacked me." He jerked his snout towards the fallen banescale. ___Gleis kept her gaze fixed on Oakwood, but flicked her tail towards Abyss. The fae crept off towards the banescale, presumably to relieve her of any valuables she may have had. Oakwood ignored the exchange and sunk into a deep bow. "I owe you and your friends my life," he said. "Please, if there's any way I can be of service..." ___Gleis considered him for a moment. He was covered in scars both old and new, and his frame spoke of wiry muscle despite his apparent starvation. He could clearly handle himself in a fight. Perhaps he could be of use to her. "Tell me, Oakwood," she grinned. "How do you feel about thievery?" Aaah thank you so much @Cattafang for commenting! I was worried no one was gonna interact with this, so it's amazing to get someone right off the bat! Anyway, today's roll was a 4, which means a freeloader will be joining the Raiders (not Oakwood, he's from the daily fodder task). I was worried this chapter was getting too long, though, so the freeloader will have to be introduced next time. Maybe he'll be able to explain some things about the orb...
