He shifted the large hat on his head to shade his eyes, but they glowed with a light of their own. Today was the first day of his own life on the road with a caravan! It was exciting! Sure, there was only the one wagon. And, yes okay, the only two other passengers were his friends Gusnav and Alister. But that didn’t matter! They were starting something new. Runeclaw shifted to one side of the wagon seat so Alister could sit next to him. The pale obelisk was an old hand at road travel. The pair had spent many such mornings together before when they were growing up in Peri's caravan. Companionable silence settled over them like a blanket. Faintly, Runeclaw could hear Gusnav snoring lightly from under the wagon cover, where the imperial dragon was coiled among their supplies. He didn’t give him a hard time. If Gusnav hadn’t discovered that buried chest full of scrolls and jewelry yesterday, none of them would have been able to afford this proper new wagon and its steeds. Runeclaw was very pleased not to be carrying everything on his back while they made their first trade journey. “Nothing for it but to start.” He murmured to Alister. His friend grinned at him. Runeclaw flicked the lead attached to the barkback boars and made a soft clucking noise. They were off! The roads were well kept, the weather was fine, and they encountered other travelers on the road just enough to assuage any fears of being a lone target on an empty path. All three dragons took turns at driving, keeping an eye out, and resting. Gusnav was holding the reins when he spotted a pale figure sitting just off the side of the road ahead. Beside him, Runeclaw squinted to make out details. “They’ve got some armor on.” He muttered to Gusnav. The nocturne dragon’s tail subtly wrapped around a weapon, just in case they needed to defend themselves. Hopefully, they wouldn’t have to. As they drew closer, the figure looked up belatedly. It was a wildclaw dragon with a few pieces of white armor on. When she saw them looking at her, the dragon hesitated, then waved weakly. Glowing, bright blue light glittered on her claws. What caught Gusnav’s attention, though, were the tracks of tears on her face. “You hurt, wanderer?” He called out. He slowed the boars so they could speak with the stranger. The dragon ducked her head so her short arms could reach her face. She scrubbed at her tears. “Just, ah- just having a bad day.” She replied in a thick, clogged voice, “Don’t suppose you’re headed to Slate Bend?” “Naw, wanderer,” Runeclaw answered easily, “We’re aiming for Fangridge. Haven’t heard of Slate Bend.” “Oh, right…” She cleared her throat and blinked tears from her eyes, “Suppose it is a pretty small place.” “Home?” Gusnav inquired, with a nod towards the pale dragon. She nodded. “Turns out I’m… well, I’m not cut out for all this wandering. ‘Specially not alone.” The wildclaw admitted. “Any chance I could tag along with you to Fangridge? I can pull my weight.” “Sure thing,” Runelcaw said with a tip of his hat, “come on up. Gus here was just about to take a break. You can help me keep an eye on the road while I drive.” The wildclaw perked up. “Thank you! You’re the first good thing that’s happened all day! M’name is Eva.” “Welcome Eva, I’m Runeclaw. These barkbacks are Boll and Stump - and you already heard this is Gusnav.” Runeclaw made introductions, gesturing around. Eva waved again, a little shyly, at all of them. Gusnav pulled the boars to a halt and slid off the bench, passing the reins to Runeclaw. Their eyes met in wordless understanding. Gus would go wake up Alister so that he could keep watch on the newcomer from the wagon. Gusnav would keep an eye out behind them, just in case this was some sort of distraction. Eva stepped up to take a seat on the bench looking exhausted and grateful. Gus just hoped it wasn’t a ruse. Around him, the other three dragons were curled together in sleep. The night was just cool enough that it made them huddle together to ward off the chill. It was no surprise to find Gus and Eva tucked in among all of Alister’s fluff. Runeclaw felt a fond smile slip across his face at the sight of them. It wouldn’t be long before Gusnav outgrew all of them. His imperial heritage meant that he would get quite large by the time he stopped growing. Even so young as he was, barely more than a child now, he was taller than all of them. And to think, he hailed from the same kingdom that Runeclaw had run from. When Gus had mentioned the Rosethorn Valley, you could have knocked Runeclaw over with a feather. He had spent so long getting as far away as he could. Never had he expected to cross paths with anyone else who had left the valley, though Gusnav was far too young to know about the events that had seen Runeclaw fleeing for his life. Surely, something had tangled their fates together. It was too much of a coincidence otherwise. Runeclaw let out a sigh. He was determined not to let his young friend suffer the way that he had. As if sensing his regard, Gus cracked one eye open sleepily to look back at Runeclaw. Seeing the small dragon looking right at him, Gus blinked and raised his head, ears flicking forward in attention. Wordlessly, Runeclaw waved him off and smiled gently, shaking his head. It was nothing. Gus, with all the trust of youth, offered a sleepy smile in return before snuggling back down to sleep.
