Prize Drawing
We will draw prizes for this raffle starting on the Sunday after the raffle has ended.
Daily door prizes do NOT count toward the main raffle prizes, i.e. - if you win a Daily Door Prize, you will still be entered to win in the main raffle.
We will draw prize in batches of 10 until all prizes are distributed.
Winners will only be able to win once. If for some reason, all names have been drawn and there are still prizes left over, all tickets will go back into the drawing, and continue until all prizes are given out. Winners will be chosen at random.org.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answering the Trivia question nets you a ticket for the Daily Prize only. One answer per day, per player. It also has no bearing on the outcome of the main raffle, i.e. - if you win a daily prize, it will not affect the main raffle drawing. THERE WILL BE 2 WINNERS PER DAY ON THE DAILY DRAWING.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These will stay up until chosen:
Answer all questions right here on the raffle board - I'll count them daily. They will run until I post the next day's question (it won't be at midnight or rollover). Right answer nets you 2 tickets to the Daily Prize, participation will still get you 1 ticket, even the wrong answer!! No limits to winners - can win more than once in the week. Most of all, HAVE FUN.
Day One - Question - Sunday
What was the famous pirate Blackbeard's real name?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: Edward Teach
Teach was born in Bristol, England, around 1680, and took to piracy sometime during the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1713). He was a huge man, standing 6'4" in his pirate boots, and was always armed to the teeth with pistols, cutlasses and daggers. Moreover, he had a penchant for weaving strings of hemp and tapers into his enormous beard, which must have made him even more terrifying to behold - especially when he lit the tapers! Teach made his permanent base in North Carolina and the Governor of North Carolina, Charles Eden, afforded Blackbeard unofficial protection in return for a share of the booty. Teach met his end after a desperate battle with the British Navy on November 22, 1713. It took five gunshot wounds and 20 stab wounds to do him in.
Our two winners are @Eliott (who chose first), and @kirkfan2255
Day Two - Question - Monday
What was the real reason pirates pierced their ears?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: You all did great on this one! From preventing seasickness, to pay for their funeral, or pay for passage back to their homeland in case of death, to mark their travels, and for the superstitious reasons like better eyesight - and even protect against drowning!
Our two winners are @Torru (who chooses first) and @Delcat
Day Three Question - Tuesday
How does one become the captain of a pirate ship?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The captain was elected by a vote among the crew - and he even got double the booty. But if made decisions, the crew could also vote against him. Democracy in it's infancy.
Our two winners are @risforrose (who chooses first) and @rubyredtan
Day Four Question - Wednesday
This famous pirate was originally hired by the British to capture pirates. Who was he?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer - I was looking for William Kidd, but since I wasn't specific, I'm accepting all answers today.
William Kidd was originally a privateer that turned to piracy, and met his demise in his mid fifties - hanged. But his rope snapped, and they had to hoist him up again - where he actually died. Then his body was taken to Tilbury Point on the River Thames, where his body was hung a third time, this time for display.
Our two winners are @NicarratheBold (who chooses first) and @AeonsMusings
Day Five Question - Thursday
Which officer of the pirate ship splits the booty between the crew, and also doles out punishment?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: The Quartermaster
With power almost equal to the captain, a quartermaster was elected along with the captain. It was also his job to decide what to take from a captured ship, and keep accurate records.
Our two winners are @FloatingInSpace (who chooses first) and @maralice13
Day Six Question - Friday
Who was considered to be the most successful female pirate in history, until being offered amnesty by China?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer: Ching Shih
Estimates have said that she could have controlled up to 1800 ships that were manned by over 80,000 crew members. After being offered amnesty from China, she retired and kept her riches and her men were given military jobs.
Our two winners are @rocketgirl2 (who chooses first) and @DreadPirateHyde
Day Seven Question - Saturday

As I walked by the dockside one evening so fair
To view the salt water and take the sea air
I heard an old fisherman singing a song
Won’t you take ma away boys me time is not long
The breeze along the coast of the Sea of a Thousand Currents seemed to be alive with the haunting refrain of a sad pirate shanty.
You stood along the shoreline, squinting into the misty night before nearly jumping out of your skin at the sight of a large, eerily luminescent worn down ship sailing straight towards you.
You leap back and watch as it docks, it was strange to see a ship like this suddenly appear out of nowhere, and your confusion continued as you noticed, the ship lacked any proper crew.
Or ANY crew for that matter.
You had crept in for a closer look when-
"AYE!"
You spin around, yelping and feeling your heart beat like mad. You are met with the sight of a dark dragon decked in boots and all the usual pirate garb, perhaps this was the captain of the ship?
"Greetins' there land lubber, seems ye has come about a place not typical of yer type to be wanderin' in."
The dragon eyes you and then heartily laughs, slapping your back. His ice cold touch gives you goosebumps as you stumble away from him in a trance-like horror.
"Arr, ye dont need to worry. You've come to the right place! We're here for good reason a'course."
You take another look around to see entities everywhere, suddenly all different members of this ghastly pirate crew have appeared and are bustling about with chests and barrels, all filled to the brim with items. Their uproaring laughter and tumultuous banter was just as sudden to hear as they were to see, both startled you just as much as the other.
"We hail from Davy Jones's Locker, us kelpies are lookin' fer some crewmates."
Now, I don’t want a harp nor a halo, not me
Just give me a breeze and a good rolling sea
I’ll play me old squeeze-box as we sail along
With the wind in the rigging to sing me a song
To view the salt water and take the sea air
I heard an old fisherman singing a song
