Oh, how she wished she had never been hatched. Or had hatched a different type of dragon, at the very least. Maybe then, she wouldn’t have such a hard time making friends. Maybe then… maybe then, her peers wouldn’t be afraid of her. Indeed, they were so inundated with talk of how frightful and full of bloodlust her kind could be that they never stopped to consider that these things weren’t true of all Mirror dragons. That they weren’t true of her.
Carroll, unlike some Mirrors, was a wallflower; gentle and reserved, preferring the company of her flower garden to the company of others. She didn’t like the way they stared and whispered, the way they gave her a wide berth and avoided eye contact, the way they spoke of her as if they knew her when they clearly didn’t. If only there was a way to convince them that she was different, if only there was a way to make them see -
“Perhaps there is a way to make them see,” she thought aloud, running a claw along a delicate stem of a bright flower. “If I could get the clan to see me as anything other than dangerous… then they’ll accept me as one of their own!” Eyes alight with renewed determination, she began to formulate a plan.

If one were to make a list of all of the outrageous things that Carroll had ever done in her short life, it would consist of this one mad idea: to sneak into a tea party, adorned in flowers. In fact, she rather doubted that no Mirror had ever done such a thing before. At least, she’d never heard of one - so why not be the first? Was it mad? Yes, absolutely! Could is work? Perhaps, but she wouldn’t know unless she tried.
Clad in flowered leis, she watched from her hiding place as her clanmates began to arrive for the tea party, marching in and greeting each other as if they did this sort of thing every day. If she held her head high and imitated them - Mirroring their confidence, one might say - she was sure to be able to join them.
Emerging from the shadows, Carroll walked into the perimeter of the grove that had been transformed into a magnificent tea setting. No one noticed her at first, but soon, one by one, the guests turned to stare at her. Taking in a gulp of air and hoping that no one saw her crest vibrate in her anxiety, the dragoness settled in and crossed her forelimbs primly.
For a moment, no one moved. There was a flurry of movement and a perky Spiral wiggled and writhed in front of her, holding out a tea cup on a saucer. Blinking, the Mirror gingerly accepted the empty cup and opened her mouth to speak, but the Spiral beat her to it.
“What kind of tea would you like? We have a wide variety of teas! Herbal teas, green teas, black teas, white teas, rooibos, and some medicinal teas, I think, I’m honestly not sure how many we have here today. It’s a much bigger turn out than we had last time and I think everyone brought a little something different to the party. Honestly, I’m particularly fond of herbal teas with a little bit of honey, but a good white tea is always welcome in my cup! I actually have a black tea that you could try if you were feeling spunky! My mom made it. It’s a little much for me, but I think it might be okay for someone like you! You seem like the brave type!”
Overwhelmed by how rapidly the words were falling out, Carroll made a small sound of distress and held up a claw. The gesture managed to stop her new rambly companion in her tracks, but the Spiral still wriggled restlessly.
“If you have a hibiscus tea, I would like to try that, actually, it’s my favorite flower.” she replied.
It was amazing, Carroll would think to herself late that evening, how a single sentence could dispel the tension in a room.
