The dragons of the Peaks live among the tallest mountains where snow and ice remain at least nine months of the year, and sometimes year-round. Some younger clan members have started to build their homes in the friendlier foothills. Dragons of the Peaks are known for their hardiness and excel in endurance flying, but they do tend to be smaller than their counterparts in the Underworld and the Steppes due to their lean diet. They make their homes in smaller caves that do not connect to the Underworld, and in dwellings of packed snow which keep them well-insulated. The Peaks are the least-populated area of civilized dragondom. Peaks Clan: As their name suggests, this clan lives in the Peaks. They eschew much of the ostentation of the lowland clans, living 'as dragons were meant to' - meaning, depending on their power and strength to feed themselves, to keep their home safe, and to prove their superiority to all other creatures and indeed most other dragons. They are fierce and ferocious, rigidly organized into a hierarchy, and do not much mix with the other clans except in battle and the occasional gathering. Much of their way of life is shrouded and trespassers into their lofty territory are treated without mercy. Strengths: Self-sufficient, strong fliers, fierce warriors. Weaknesses: Obsessed with tradition, unbending. [s]***********************************************[/s] The Peaks rise high into the sky, the tallest mountaintops disappearing into the clouds high overhead. The mountains are home to the Peaks Clan, dragons who decided to live in the mountains, able to spread their wings and soar with the eagles, rather than stay belowgound, only venturing out to hunt and fight. Dragons of the Peaks Clan are smaller than the dragons of other clans; wiry and strong. They don't live as the dragons in the Underworld do; rather, these dragons believe that each dragon must look after themselves; they hunt and fight for their food and home every day. The Peaks Clan dragons are proud dragons, believing themselves superior to all other life. These dragons are highly suspicious of outsiders, especially after the recent increase in attacks by rogues. Outsiders are rarely permitted to join this Clan, and if an outsider is allowed in, sometimes the rigid hierarchy and traditions prove to be too much. Approximately ten-fifteen years ago, there was a major war among the Clans. This war contributed to the Peaks Clan's hostile attitude towards strangers; while the Peaks Clan did not suffer the heaviest losses of the war, it was close, and only through virtue of these dragons' exceptional endurance. Ever since, training has been of the utmost concern; all young draconets begin their training as soon as they are no longer considered hatchlings. Some however, if they prove strong enough, begin their training even earlier than that. Dragons are taught to hunt, first of all-- Dragons of the Peaks Clan hunt from the skies, and adapt their fighting strategy to mimic their hunting. It has been many years and nests and Aural has yet to find an heir. She is large, one of the largest of the small, fast, ruthless drgaons that make up the clan. She is strong, both phyiscally and magically, more so magically. She is known as one of the best mages in all the clans. She is firm and strict but kind, one of the kindest Peak leaders in generations. Some think this makes her weak, while some thinks it calls upon a new era for the clan. It would be easy to say that Sandstone is too stubborn for his own good, and part of that lies in his upbringing. His father was even more of a hard-head, if you could believe it, and trusted in the traditional ways of dragons. He was an overall violent creature and raised his young to be heartless tanks. Upon reaching adulthood, Sandstone was forced to fight his father as a sort of "rite of passage." Marengo had little interest in the task, however, and constantly zoned out to listen to the general's war talks or watching him train troops. It was early, but Aural was up before then sun. She wasn't quite ready to leave her cave, the highest of the residential caves, so she just laid at the entrance, looking down as the Peaks dragons started their day.

Borelus appeared behind her. Her mate was much larger, bigger and heavier than her, but she had a much larger wingspan, she was better at flying. When he didn't say anything, just stood behind her, staring, she cleared her throat.

"Better start the day. I'll go talk to Zaimo, see if she has anything to report." She said, stretching her large body into a standing position.

"I'll talk to Alesia." Borelus rumbled, his voice deep and harsh. He wandered to the edge of the cave and leapt, allowing his wings to help him parachute down. Aural took the stairs that were carved into the side of the mountain. The peaks leaders were ready to start their day.

Zircon watched the two leaders fly, her expression awed. Zircon stretched out her own wings, flapping them experimentally; somehow, she doubted that they'd be able to lift her. Still, she kept at it, taking little running leaps, flapping her wings furiously, trying to keep herself off of the ground. She could keep herself aloft for a few seconds, but then she'd lose the rhythm, and crash back to the ground, grunting. It was after one such crash that she found herself rolling into one of the adults' legs. Zircon looked up from her position on her back, moving her wing out of the way. She found herself staring at Alesia, and she let out a startled squeak. "Oops! Sorry!" she chirruped, scrambling to her feet and wincing as she accidentally stepped on a wing. "I was trying to fly, but... Well, I'm not very good at it."

Zaimo rode the chill wind of the Peaks, returning from visiting the borderlands followed by a night of patrolling the foothills. She had hunted for herself while out, landing briefly to scratch out some lean shrubs and game before returning to the skies.

She turned her body skyward, beating her wings against the air below in a steep climb headed to the topmost of caves. From here as the sun peeked over the now curved horizon, it seemed that there could be no place in the world where dawn looked as it did then.

As she circled the near-summits, she glimpsed the leaders' cave and saw that Aural and Borelus had surely left; the idea that they would rise after the sun was of course unthinkable. She veered towards the rocks, banking and landing on a wide, steady stone well used by the clan's dragons. She folded her wings and shivered, heading to meet her clan mates.

Aural smiled, stepping forward. "Zaimo, dearest child." The clan had learned long ago not to be offended by Aural, as she called everyone (save Borelus) her child. Her claws dug into the soft grass at her feet as she relaxed her fins and folded her wings against her body.

Borelus stepped forward as well, approaching the other guardian to join in the conversation. "How was your flight? Any threats to our borders, any sigh of the nomads?" His expression was hard, his eyes set like a drill sergeants, but that was just how Borelus was. Everyone knew his deep voice and intimidating posture was as much a part of Borelus as his wings and scales.

((I saw the other clans had names for their leaders. Mostly "high Empress" so I'm thinking Aural would like to be High Preistess. What do you guys think?
It had been a long night. Alesia had woken himself as the moon reached its zenith and gone to relieve the warrior on duty before him then stood along the wide bowl of land that fronts the main residential caves of the Peaks clan, occasionally pacing back and forth. Even after all these years, it was difficult for the Skydancer to stay alert in the cold; if he didn't pace about to keep blood flowing, he might have been in danger of falling asleep on his feet. The sun hasn't yet crested the mountains when he can feel the clan beginning to stir - no noise or sight confirms it, but Alesia can sense it somehow - and not too long after, he's confirmed by hearing the deep tones of Borelus' voice, high above him. Alesia stretches his wings out and rotates them, stiff from the chilly night, and looks up expectantly when he hears the leathery sound of the Guardian's wings. However, before the deputy can reach him, Alesia is distracted by the weight suddenly thrown against the lower portion of his long, narrow legs. Dipping his head, he peers at the source and gives a quiet snort of amusement (which, for the dour Skydancer, is the closest he gets to a belly-laugh). Of course it would be the orphaned dragonet recently rescued into the clan. "No harm done, little one." Lowering his head just a bit more, he helps Zircon gain her feet and steady, with a nudge of his nose. "I'm certain the ability will come in time. When I was a hatchling, almost all of my year-mates were able to fly straight out of the shell. But since Skydancers have feathers, it took me some time to manage flight- I was born with a downy fuzz on my wings, just as you were, which was good for insulation, but not very aerodynamic." This is a longer speech than most adult dragons can wring from Alesia, but he has always been fond of hatchlings, and is especially so of this rambunctious little snip. His clan mates were uniformly serious, and though he did not mind that, the levity the little Skydancer had brought with her was a welcome diversion.
@WildDragonFlying Sorry I took so long to respond! It's been an unsettled day. @GiftsOfArtemis Rage's full titles still make me laugh. So pompous. But High Priestess sounds suitable for the Peaks - not too flowery, but respectful and a little mysterious. I like it!

Omric circled a couple of times overhead. He was especially happy to be flying out in the open air. Her saw the three guardians below. Now this was confusing. It was the first time he was out of his master's sanctum and all he knew about the dragon was a picture that Azuros drew. Azuros was an excellent clairvoyant, but a poor artist. Not wanting to make a fool of himself he landed near the three guardians.
He quietly landed stood on his hind legs and began shuffling through a bag he wore over his shoulder with his front claws. He pulled out a large beetle, almost surprised to find it there, and ate it. Noticing his distraction he quickly began shuffling again and pulled out a folded up parchment.
Unfolding it he squinted. Yes it was probably a drawing of a guardian. Yes the shaman's handwriting was illegible. He squinted "Sampslonp?" He mouthed to himself.
