No matter how hard he tried to talk himself out of it, he hated them. He'd dug out several thorns from his feet, gotten bitten by more bugs than he cared to count, and had been forced to walk through plenty of tangled undergrowth. Meanwhile, above him, his half-brother Inanos slid through the treetops with much less difficulty. He'd taken after their mother- down to the lean Spiral build and the ease with which he intimidated- no, commanded others. While he took the air, Aulus was on ground patrol, which was much harder than it sounded when he couldn't even walk right. There was a river up ahead- Aulus could hear it if he strained his ears hard enough. It'd be a welcome relief from this dense jungle forest, and maybe Inanos would let them stop for a rest. Either way, he hoped that they could just get this mission over with. He couldn't wait to get back to camp and let the raiders do the rest.

Aulus hated the Shrieking Wilds.

Vita paused, feeling an unnatural pain between his eyes. It made him light-headed, almost like a pull forward. One of his wasn't going into rot as well, was it? But no, he knew what that felt like, and this wasn't it. It was something...foreign. He couldn't pinpoint anything, but it still made him uneasy.

Despite the thick canopy coverage, Vita felt exposed when he stepped cautiously into the clearing that aligned each bank of the vein. He didn't spot anything, but the dull ache was spreading to the rest of his head, and he took a subconscious step backward. Maybe it was a band of Seriths? He would rather not be around for than. But no, he knew what those felt like, and this was much different, so he stayed put, though with a foot ready in the shade of the forest in case he had to dash.

Another, bare tug at the back of his mind told him that something else was close - this was a more natural feeling, and smaller. It must be someone from his clan wandering about.

The thick jungle thinned out a bit as the sound of water got louder. As the trees spaced out, Aulus could see more of Inanos's form above him, before at long last the Spiral was forced back to the ground.

"There's a river up ahead," Aulus whispered. "Do you think we could stop?"

Inanos shook his head. "No," he replied, his voice barely audible. "We need to keep moving. We have a job to do, and I'd like to get it done as fast as possible. This territory isn't being too kind to me."

You're telling me, Aulus thought. You're not the one stuck on the ground.

The two of them broke through the trees and into the clearing, which was quiet except for the sounds of the stream and the birds.

"Are you sure we can't stop? Please?"

Vita was only able to catch the last part of their conversation, from "as fast as possible...". These were certainly dragons, and that must have meant they were trying to find their way out. Although, they were going deeper into the forest, not away.

Ah well, I guess it's easy to get turned around in here.

The Wildclaw was anxious as the figures came into view - dark, edgy looking dragons. Not really the type to take a joy trip into the thick of the jungle. Compared to them, he must have seemed to blend right into the woods, but surely they could see him, he was just across the fast-running stream. Right now, stealth didn't seem necessary.

"Excuse me," Vita burst, with unpracticed politeness, "If you're trying to leave, I believe you simply have to go back in the opposite direction. Don't feel bad, this place is easy to get lost in." He may have prattled a bit more than he needed to, but it didn't matter. His voice layered on top of the gurgling vein.

They weren't alone.

Aulus took a nervous step back. There was someone here- if he looked across the river, he could make out the outline of a very camouflaged Wildclaw- and he had no idea how exactly to pull this off without looking suspicious.

Inanos stepped into the front, intercepting before Aulus could say anything stupid. "We're not trying to leave," he replied. "We were just passing through here. The two of us have friends on the other side of the Wilds we're trying to meet with, and we heard this was the quickest way through."

"I mean, you may know more about this place then we do," Aulus interrupted. "While we've got you here, do you mind if I ask if this is the right way?"

Vita narrowed his eyes in thought. These dragons seemed mild, but their overall aura was putting him off. He certainly didn't want these shady dragons too close to the Grove, being that even here was racking at his nerves.
"That depends," the Wildclaw replied carefully, but casually. "Are they closer to the Behemoth or the Ruins?" At the same time, Vita was sizing them up. Paranoia was taking hold, yes, just due to the fact that he hadn't seen wanders in nearly a year. That left the question, who told these dragons to cut through the Grove?

"The Behemoth," Inanos replied. "We came from the direction of Light."

The Spiral glanced over his shoulder at Aulus. The Pearlcatcher was fidgeting too much- twiddling his necklace or adjusting his headdress like that probably didn't look very good in the eyes of the other dragon.

He gave his half-brother a warning glance before returning his attention to the dragon across the stream. Hopefully, he was too far away to see.

"What business do you have at the Behemoth? It's, ah..." he tried to come up with the appropriate description, because "sacred" didn't sound quite right "...well, the Behemoth."

What was making Vita nervous was his uncertainty. We're these dragons acting odd? Is this how travelers usually acted, and looked? The Wildclaw had no experience seeing through the lies of dragons outside of his clan. As of now, the two seemed humble.
Oh, I don't know! This isn't my area of expertise, this is what Jem and Maloid do.
To his relief, the dragon of his clan he had sensed at the back of his mind seemed to be getting stronger, closer.
What am I worrying about? This is my territory, I know it best, and on top of it, I'm aware. So that should mean I have the upper hand, even against two other dragons, right? His mind was taking him off to imagine the worst possible situations.

"Like I said, we're visiting some friends over there," Inanos replied. "They live in a clan in that general vicinity. I don't know this area too well, so, again, a few pointers over in that direction would be appreciated."

No matter which way this was going to go, Inanos was going to lose time. They'd have to lay low for a bit in order to lose the Wildclaw's suspicion if this worked, and if it didn't, well, that was self-explanatory.

Aulus, meanwhile, had taken a vested interest in the trees in the direction they had come from. He wouldn't even look across the river.
