YAMADA RINA
Quirk: Pixelate
Yamada took a deep, shaky breath. Her palms were dripping sweat, and they hadn't even started yet.
"EVERYBODY GOOOO!"
Yamada jumped as Present Mic's voice cut through her thoughts. All around her the other kids had already set into motion. Pursing her lips, she crouched into a starting position as the gates swung open--one foot, two feet wide--then phased out.
The world around her dissolved into colorful static, shouts and pounding footsteps and hammering heart vanishing in an instant. She could still make out the slightly lighter-colored gap where the gates were parting, then she was through it and flying down what looked like city streets.
She plunged back into the three dimensional world. Not three feet from her, a wheeled robot lay twitching in the road. Everything looked so real. The houses--it could have been a street in her neighborhood. She blinked, shaking her head.
Focus. A crash nearby reminded her of the seconds slipping through her fingers.
Movement caught her eye. Phasing out, she dashed ahead, through the dark shadow of a robot.
How to disable it? Biting her lip, she stepped up. Without space or mass, gravity had no hold on her--at least until she phased back in.
Don't look down. Look up. It wasn't that far up, maybe ten feet to the metal torso that must house its electronics. Biting her lip, she sank into that dark mass and let reality catch up with her.
Rina yelped, covering her ears--the roar of the engine and squeal of metal gears was unbearable--then forced herself to lower them again and begin feeling around for something she could tear out or snap or--a fistful of wires came away with a sizzle of electricity. Pixellating into 2D, she floated down from the robot and took a few steps back before checking in on her handiwork. The robot--its front painted with a bold "2" stood frozen over her, unmoving and silent.

Drying the sweat from her hands, she hesitated
as an elephant thundered through the intersection. An elephant . . . ? Focus, Rina! Next target. She cast around, phased to the intersection and skirted a sparking wreck, then phased down another alleyway and through a fake building, chasing a tank-like robot--that suddenly froze. She phased in just in time to see
a girl with long cables trailing from her head back away from its still form. What kind of Quirk--what was that? A switch? Was that allowed? Could you just hit an off switch and . . . ?
Spinning on her heel, she almost ran into the 1-pointer bearing down on her, phased out without thinking, passing through it to check its back. Before it could turn on her, she'd located a similar switch tucked into the gap between its armor plates. It too ground to a halt.
Another point? Was that allowed? She wished she'd listened more closely when Mic had explained the rules.
