Umbrella Academy

Rp thread

In the mid-20th century, on the twelfth hour of the first day of October of 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these woman had been pregnant when the day first began.

Seven of these children were adopted by eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and, upon displaying their powerful abilities, were made by him into a crime fighting team. These seven grew famous, but as time grew on they were split apart and vanished from the world without warning.

Six days later, a select few of those fourty three remaining magically gifted individuals received cryptic letters from an even more cryptic person detailing that they come to a certain place at a certain time to meet.

Almost immediately after the letters reached their targets, devastation reigned on the world. Almost total destruction of all life as everyone knew it. The only survivors were those who had received the letters. Those who had been born on that fateful day twenty seven years ago.

with the world being destroyed and nowhere else to turn, there is no choice but to follow the cryptic letters, for perhaps they shall have answers.

Information:

Before the 43 children were born, there was no such thing as having powers. Hence why it was such a HUGE development for this world.

The world was actually destroyed when the moon for unknown reasons blew up and the pieces rained down upon the world. At the sights of impact, every building is flattened and crumbled. And if one was close enough to an impact, they were likely vaporized.

The world was destroyed in 2016 which means that all technology is relatively modern. However, most if not all cars were destroyed, crushed, or rendered completely useless by the falling debris of buildings. And that being said, cell phone towers are completely useless, though it is fairly common to find small places which are fueled by electricity.

Buildings of most heights have been leveled and flattened and its rare to see any sort of structure higher than about a story. Most buildings are completely unfit to live inside, and those which are capable are usually farm houses and in places which dont seem to be very populated.

We will be starting out in the place where the Umbrella Academy was last seen, a theater which was flattened by another building. All of our characters will have received a rather cryptic letter detailing they meet there.

As animals go, there are some wild animals who remain. They are not mutated noor changed in any way, but they are scarce and few in between.

This is an Rp based off the netflix show and dark horse comic of the same name. However you don't need to know anything about the show or comic to join in.

its important to note that before the apocalypse your character was highly likely just a normal civilian with superpowers that they either hid or used to their advantage at work. However it is likely if they use them in front of people media would have been all over them. So either they are well known as another superpowered person or they are unknown to have superpowers.

Characters:

Name: Nirmala Chakrabarti
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: Nirmala is a pretty woman. She has a willowy body, long arms with slender fingers, and equally long legs. She has clay colored skin and an hourglass shaped form, standing at about 5'7". her thick hair is jet black and frames her angular face, showing off her wide, dark brown cat-like eyes. As clothing goes, she prefers comfort, so at the moment she's wearing leggings and a tunic top which both have slightly vibrant designs on them. She has a tattoo of a hand made from vague designs on her lower left wrist, as well as a tattoo of a tribal flower on her left shoulder blade.

Abilities: Magnetism

She can attract and repel magnetic metals as long as she can see said metal. However, larger items seem to be more difficult for her to lift and throw, and objects which don't have magnetic properties are impossible for her to lift. The heavier an object the more of her concentration it will take. The heaviest object she's ever lifted was a car, and that was when she was on an adrenaline high.

While she's using her powers, her ability does disrupt electronics similarly to putting a magnet on or around them. However this ability won't do any actual damage unless she is next to said computer with her powers activated for an extended period of time.

Using her powers, Nirmala can actually act as a living MRI. She can take a mental picture of things that are around her within a 30 foot radius. This mostly works best on living things so she can see their insides, but has also been used to sense underground water pipes.

Her power seems to have a sort of.. personality of its own, most of the time working just fine, but occasionally just refusing to work, or working without her input.

Weaknesses:
She can only attract objects within a thirty foot radius of herself, with it being far easier to focus on objects she can see, and one object at a time (though she can easily lift more, especially if they are smaller). She can't actively sense magnetic metals, meaning that sometimes its a crap shoot if she can actively attract or repel things. As her disruption of electronics go, this is a power she's unable to actively control, and occasionally can perform without meaning to. As such, she never had a cell phone due to constantly warping the screen and eventually breaking said phone.

Taking a mental MRI of a person requires all of her focus (so her to stay completely still), as well as her to close her eyes. This process takes around the same time as a normal MRI for her to start being able to sense the inside of a person and she must be in contact with said person for it to function.

Personality: Nirmala is a sweet, kind, and gentle person. With a slightly subdued personality and a penchant for smiling and turning the other cheek she seems to be able to get along with just about anyone. She is a bit overly emotional at times, and is a known emotional crier. Sad, happy, angry, confused, she will almost always have tears in her eyes.

Despite this, she does have a more professional side and can hold back her tears in a situation where they would be highly unprofessional (ex her job delivering bad news to patients).

She's got high confidence, focused, and has rather intense observation skills.
Backstory: Nirmala even as a kid wanted to help other kids. She spent most of her childhood playing doctor and grew up always wanting to be one.

Her parents and herself actually lived in india and moved to america when Nirmala was about three years old.

Discovering her abilities, she was rather disappointed that they weren't useful for the profession of her dreams. So, through hard work and determination, she discovered a way to make them useful for her job.

When the world fell, Nirmala's powers kicked in on instinct. As the shards of the moon collided with the earth, her magnetism activated and protected her. No matter how hard she tried to deactivate her abilities, they refused to let go. And when the moon finally stopped falling and she could escape, all of her patients and the entire hospital had been leveled.

Former Job: Doctor (pediatric)
Other: Nirmala is bi-lingual, being able to speak a dialect of Hindi, and English. She doesn't have an accent for either language.

____

Name: Genysis Tanner
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Pansexual
Appearance: Genysis is a slightly shorter woman with a rectangular shape. She has slightly more broad shoulders and strong muscle tone from years of gymnastics. Before the world was destroyed she (for a movie) had dyed her hair a vibrant shade of red. However it is starting to grow out to its natural dirty blonde at the roots. Her face is non-descript and forgettable, with her only real defining feature being her green eyes.

She's not really traditionally pretty, but doesn't seem to let that bother her.

Abilities: Gravity Manipulation

The laws of gravity do not apply to her. That means she can float at any time she pleases, walk up or down walls as she pleases, and jump from planes without parachutes without hurting herself or others around her. She can, by touching something, also influence its gravity as well. Using her power on herself is nearly effortless.

Weaknesses: The larger item she touches, the more difficult it is to manipulate the gravity, and if she lets go, gravity will once again have an affect on said object. While she can float, she cannot actively control where she floats, meaning that the wind just kind of blows her all around if she decides to float up too high. She can still take damage from falls, so she has to watch how quickly she manipulates her own center of gravity. She has a few times managed to break her own legs and arms using her power to stop things which are already falling. Using her ability on living creatures or other people is immensely difficult and she can sometimes on accident end up hurting a person rather than helping them. (she can crush their insides oops)

she can when sleeping accidentally use this power and end up somewhere she doesn't want to be by floating off into the sky.

Personality: Genysis is one of those people who is always wanting to have fun. As explained below she's always risking her own life because it gives her an adrenaline high that she loves.
Backstory: Genysis was named by her mother, who being fairly religious.. assumed that Genysis' birth was an act of god. As such, she was named after something religious and expected for greatness. her mother was strict and rigid, expecting only greatness from her. Putting her in sport after sport, she was pleased when Genysis showed a strong affinity for being a gymnast.

it was during this time period that Genysis discovered her powers. And afraid of what her mother might do if she found out, she ran away from home. Having been very sheltered her entire life (even being home schooled), she started doing odd jobs here and there to make ends meet. Lying about her age, she used her abilities to help some contractors and ended up as a contractor. She also at the time fell in to a rather interesting crowd of people. They took her skydiving for the first time. And this was when Genysis discovered adrenaline. Floored that she could make it last longer by manipulating her personal center of gravity she loved the sensations that the adrenaline gave her. So she started to do more and more dangerous things. So addicted to the jolt of excitement that risking her life gave her, she used the money she'd saved as a contractor to put herself through Stunt School.

Eventually, she found her niche as a stunt woman, and has even worked on a few movies performing stunts. Due to her powers, she's been able to do stunts which are impossible for normal humans. And as such has made a sort of name for herself in that world and was hired rather frequently.

Now that the world has been destroyed though, she has to find her own way to get that adrenaline high. She elected to come to follow the strange letter she received in order to maybe find people and stop being alone.

Its important to note, she survived the world's destruction by levitating herself far above everything as the world was hit by fragments of the moon.

Former Job: Stunt Woman
Other: Genysis will occasionally jump off whatever buildings are left in the flattened world in order to get that adrenaline high.

(Done! Let me know if anything needs changing!)

Name: Jeremy Laythum

Age: 27

Gender: Male

Sexuality: Bisexual (Female preference)

Appearance:
Honesty, Jeremy isn't anything impressive when it comes to physique. Completely average in height at 5'9" and build, you wouldn't see him as a threatening figure. The man might be in shape, but it is more so the body type one would get from eating right and maybe going on the occasional jog. Not thin, per say, but definitely not muscular. As he spent much of his time indoors before the end of the world, he is pretty fair skinned. Not exactly pale, but you can tell that he only spent extended periods outside on occasion. No scars or blemishes mar his skin. Overall, his features are pretty attractive. Not like stunningly attractive like a model or movie star or anything like that, but normal person attractive. Enough to not make him standout too much but still enough to use it to his advantage. His hair is dirty blond and kept short, as he wanted to seem professional for his job. A pair of thin-framed glasses rest before his strangely bright, teal eyes.

Due to him being at his job when the world ended, Jeremy is still dressed as though he was at work. A blue collared, dress shirt with a tie, khaki pants, belt, and black formal shoes.

Abilities: Technopathy
Basically, he has the ability to telepathically communicate with machines as well as telekinetically manipulate them. The manipulation he is able to exert over the machines is limited to putting technology together or taking it apart. His abilities don't allow him to throw technology or anything of the sort. Parts and pieces of machines might move quickly around what he is building or deconstructing, but his abilities aren't capable of fighting on their own.

His telepathic links to machines is much like a telepathic link between two humans, as both can communicate through thoughts. However, machines have no will of their own and essentially are made to preform a function. So, Jeremy had complete control over what the machine he was connecting with would do. All he needs to do is command them.

Weaknesses:
As said above, his abilities cannot be directly used in combat. Nor is his body improved in any way nor particularly special, thus he is susceptible to damage and sickness like anyone else.

Personality:
Through years of practice, Jeremy has mastered the ability to appear as though he cares about others and take an interest in their lives. All the small talk and all the social obligations that he finds so dreadfully tedious have become almost second nature to him. He finds humans so inconceivably boring. So complacent and those that aren't think themselves superior to others simply because of their standing in their job when they are just like any other human. You might think that he finds machines more interesting, but you'd be wrong. They are equally as boring as humans, they just don't require any small talk when communicating. He excels at lying and covering for himself as well as manipulating situations to his advantage. No matter what he does, it is usually to serve his own interests or goals. Well, until he met Remnant. Now, I suppose you could say he works towards their goals.

Backstory:
Well, his life was fairly average for the most part. Parents who were always busy with their high-paying jobs, although he never really minded the lone time, and above average grades sent him to a great college. Majoring in data management and programming, Jeremy graduated a few years later. Although, it is impossible to tell how much his powers actually helped him through this. Of course, he doesn't have a problem using his natural advantages to his benefit. Whether he had some technological help or if it was on his own merit, it wasn't long before he had secured a government job involving his majors.

This was mainly because he felt like, with his abilities, that he could far more easily do what others can't and pose as a programming genius. It was just a way for him to secure a cushy, high-paying job where he basically had to do very little actual work. The real issue was all the small talk and having to pretend to like his coworkers. It was incredibly boring, but it gave him a secure income so he didn't have to worry about that, which suited him. Being able to communicate with any machine gave him the ability to look into some of the more...classified information and it gave him something to look into while he was wasting time.

But one day changed everything. While digging through classified documents, he found mention of a mysterious device. With his interest peaked, thinking that it might be something he could control, Jeremy decided that he had to be on the research team for it. By using his abilities, he managed to get himself on the team and into the secure vault-like containment facility where this mysterious piece of tech was being held. First impressions, it was one heck of a facility for one piece of technology, so whatever was in there must have been something powerful. The thought only spurred him onward. However, when he first caught sight of what was being studied, it was rather disappointing. A small, metallic blue object about the size and shape of an earplug with a red lens on the flat end. Jeremy had wondered if that was all there was to it, but if he was here, then he might as well check it out. It took a few days before he found time to go into the room it was being held in while he was alone.

As soon as he established a mental link with it, Jeremy was stunned. It was unlike anything he'd ever experienced before. It was...sentient. Not an AI but something that could actually think for itself. The presence he felt in his mind was wary, curious, and vaguely predatory. Nothing had ever captured his focus so much before. They began to converse every chance Jeremy had, speaking about all sorts of things. The device, that became known as Remnant, would ask about the world of humans and personal questions about him. Jeremy would ask questions about what it was, to which it mostly gave vague answers. Not because it was trying to be deceiving, but due to the fact that it didn't know. It knew that it was not developed by humans, it could take control any device it was physically connected to, and that its purpose had long since been completed. Potentially the strangest thing to happen because of their interactions, if the fact that the two were actually getting along famously.

When the disaster happened, at the behest of Remnant, Jeremy used his abilities to seal himself and Remnant inside the secure vault to preserve themselves from the near world-ending event. Once everything had settled down and after a slightly painful impromptu implantation of Remnant into the base of his neck, they decided the best course of action was to check out the location mentioned in the mysterious letter Jeremy had received. So they left the makeshift bunker to investigate.

Former Job: Cushy Government job involving programming and whatnot. He didn't really do the job, as his abilities allowed it to be done basically for him.

Other:
- Remnant has a voice that projects directly into Jeremy's mind. If you know Fallout, it sounds kind of like the Assaultrons from Fallout 4

Name: Derek Love

Age: 27

Gender: male

Sexuality: bi

Appearance: Stands at 5’7”. Dark black hair cut into what resembles a bowl cut but has an undercut. Of East Asian descent. Brown skin. Wears hoodies and other relaxing clothes.

Abilities: Sees the future. Only is able to see general things and has trouble with specific details (ie he knew the end of the world was coming but not in what way). Cannot see more than a month into the future.

Weaknesses: Cannot see his own future. Becomes easily overwhelmed as he has no control over when he sees the future. When trying to see specifics the event must be within a week of occurring and he must concentrate for a full day to get enough detail to be helpful. Does not know when events will occur just that they will happen within the month.

Personality: Relaxed and seemingly absent from reality. Has little motivation to do things.

Backstory: Born to non-descript parents in a non-descript home in non-descript circumstances (or so he was told). He had known about his powers for as long as he could remember. As he grew older and older he decided to stop telling people about them (~12y/o), as people thought he was crazy. Lived in a small town. After high school he took up a job as a fisherman. He didn’t travel far from his home town despite his boat being fully capable of doing so. He never made enough money to buy anything nice for himself and still lived with his parents. He was content just sitting at the sidelines. When he learned that the end of the world was coming, he did his best to prepare people for it. However there is only so much someone can do when no one believes in your powers.

Former Job: fisherman

Other: as much as the end of the world has depressed him, it has also inspired him. He is glad there are other survivors and is ready to finally take control of his life to help others
