Does life ever truly end?

As a human draws their last breath, their spirit is typically expelled from the mortal plane to an unknown final destination. However, this is not the case for all. Instead they emerge from the darkness and into a world where day is eternal.

It’s a seemingly vast woodland that stretches far to the east, eventually meeting an imposing range of mountains. Here the sunlight only dims and never extinguishes. The rivers never dry, the food is always plentiful, and the weather always pleasant. Those who live here refer to this place as Home.

Residents of this plane have had their minds cleansed of the past, the only trace left being their first name. While still possessing human intelligence and communication, they have been reshaped into a befitting animal. Conflicts between species are unheard of, as Home provides non-sapient prey for its spirits. The main distinction is that the spirits radiate a slight aura which gives away their nature.

Most do not question what may have existed for them before, preferring to accept what they now have. After all, why bother yearning for something that may have been far worse.

Others, as to be expected, aren’t nearly as content. Even without memories, a spirit may experience a motivation or emptiness that escaped being purged by their arrival. These individuals are often driven to seek a way to fill the void.

Those who have managed to leave the safety of Home and have returned speak of a well which can do just that. If one were to descend into its depths, they would be able to reclaim their past for themselves. When prodded for further information, these travelers claim they have been sworn to silence, the price of their failure.

To find this well, searchers must venture to the west. It is said that once you have gone far enough, the light begins to fade from the land until night finally reigns in day’s place. This is where the real challenge begins.

You have decided to take on the test. Will you survive it?

Introduction
Hello, and welcome to Shadow Self! This is my first attempt at running an original group roleplay on this forum. As you can see from the bit written above, there will be fantasy elements.

My goal is to run this roleplay, hopefully to its conclusion, as well as engage with a group who is willing to be creative with their writing. If an end is successfully reached and the rest of the group is willing, I might consider continuing things in another arc. If that ever happens, forewarning: the story will likely change drastically in terms of setting.

Let's forget about that for now though and move on to the expectations for the current roleplay.

Rules
 • Respect. Basically, don’t be jerks to your fellow roleplayers.
 • Communication. We will have an OOC thread, so this is heavily encouraged. I may not be the most talkative myself, but I do want to make sure we’re all on the same page.
 • Dedication. This will not be a fast-paced roleplay. While there will be some action, there will also be stretches of slowness. If you cannot handle a roleplay without something big constantly going on, this may not be for you.
 • Tying into the previous two rules, if you are having troubles keeping up or wish to drop out of the roleplay, please inform us. We can work things out from there.
 • Do not blaze ahead of the other roleplayers. It can be rather irritating to log in the following day and see that you’re fifty or more posts behind everyone.
 • No godmodding, powerplaying, etc. If you are a less experienced roleplayer who is unfamiliar with these terms, please acquaint yourself with this guide.
 • Have decent grammar. I don’t care if you make the occasional mistake, since I do so myself. However, it’d be appreciated if you could at least proofread your posts.

Auditions Besides my own character, the roleplay will be limited to six slots. If there are more applications than this, players will be chosen based on whether I think they’ll be a good addition to the group. In order to join, you will need to PM me the form below. These details pertain to your character prior to their death. Primarily, personality and history will determine which animal your character is now. Writing samples can be created specifically for this application, or you can link me to them. Note: As a place that has collected spirits for time immemorial, Home is host to residents from various eras. This includes the distant future as well as the past. Perhaps even different timelines. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of that when creating your character.
Name: Age: Personality: Appearance: History: Writing Sample:
After the slots have been officially taken, I will also require you to post a second form on this thread. Yeah, I admit this seems like a bit of a hassle, but it shouldn't take long to fill out in comparison. I just require your character's first name, their personality, and the animal that I will assign you in the thread. You can pretty much recycle stuff from your application. Please omit any details about your character's past from there though. That way most of the group is kept in the dark. Characters
Name: Daniel Personality: A quiet soul, Daniel is not fond of socializing with other spirits. This is primarily because he finds understanding their motivations as well as predicting their actions to be difficult. They never seem to be quite straightforward enough for him, whereas he always prefers to be direct. That does not mean he will entirely avoid conversation, however. The most certain way to reel him in is to begin a discussion on a more technical subject. While initially hesitant, he’ll eventually offer up his own opinions on the matter. When faced with more forceful personalities, Daniel often lacks a spine. He finds himself petrified to voice any disagreement in their presence. The louder they are, the more likely he is to bow to their will. He is far too aware of this problem and usually resents himself later for giving in to pressure so easily. When tackling a problem, he will always opt for what appears to be the simplest solution. They are always searching for more knowledge, always wondering how things work. Sheridan is fairly observant, often making note of details. Sheridan is an introvert, happy to be on their own, though they do get lonely sometimes. When interacting with people, they enjoy having conversations, learning about people and the way they think and view the world. Sheridan especially enjoys discussing scientific subjects, hypothesizing about whatever catches their interest at the moment. Sheridan doesn't like when people say mean things about other people for no good reason, and will usually try to avoid people who are regularly mean. They may try to defend the person who is being picked on, unless it could be dangerous for them, in which case, they will remain silent and keep their anger inside. When a problem arises, Sheridan will try to think of all plausible solutions, and choose the best one for the situation. Sheridan is always happy to learn something new, even something seemingly useless. Though he talks a big game, he is remarkably mediocre in everything he attempts and only ever succeeds due to the graces or sympathies of those around him For all his stubbornness and ego, Sims is very aware he has no talents and does not measure up to the impossibly high standards he imposes on others. He desperately longs to be liked and exceptional, and is obviously and very insecure about being neither of those things. This only makes him meaner, especially in the presence of others who are liked and skillful. While Sims isn’t exceptionally intelligent, he is very observant and has good intuition regarding other people’s motivations and feelings. Almost always smiling, he speaks in a commanding tone to draw attention of his listeners. He is constantly joking and telling stories, often of himself, and some would say he is the jester of any group. He's not one to shy away from difficult situations, as long as someone is watching to notice his deeds, as Tadhg has a ravenous ego. He flourishes under attention from others, and will pout when he is ignored for too long. This dramatic display can turn to anger if he isn't stopped quickly enough, and results in short outbursts of bitter words and shouting. Despite his outward mannerism, underneath Tadhg is much smarter than he appears. Though he may often play the part of fool, he is smarter than he looks, and plays dumb to get information on others. Tadhg is a notorious gossiper, and loves to sprinkle in other peoples business into his stories to create strife. When questioned, his excuse for doing this simply for fun, but in reality he does it to fuel his own ego, feeling better about himself when others appear lower on the social scale. Relationship wise, Tadhg rarely gets close with people, preferring to remain distant so he doesn't feel bad when he eventually gossips or snaps at them. On the rare occasion Tadhg does make a closer bond with someone, its often a short one. He has a tendency to be clingy, and while he has the benefit of always sticking up for you, it comes with the downside of Tadhg always wanting your attention. Only a stronger personality, or someone Tadhg views as a "bigger fish" could make him act like a responsible person. Or at least a less clingy one. It's a rare thing to see Arabella ever take no for an answer after springing to action, especially if the matter is something she dreams of having for herself. She is well known in many circles of every type of spirit, flying around like the social butterfly, or bat in this case, that she is. That's not to say Arabella gets along with everyone, in fact her ideas are too disorganized and unrealistic for most spirits to tolerate for more than a minute but she has a knack for getting others to open their mouths long before she opens hers. It would be safe to assume that Arabella is sensitive in the way a poet might be. For all her uncaring when it comes to others' judgement, she seems to glow from the inside out when in good company. Her friends are a constant source of happiness to her, and she strives to do the same for others. She surrounds herself with the theatrical and exciting, drawn to music like a moth to the flame and always eager to hear another story or two from whoever she might come across. Arabella has an impressive amount of patience for someone so rarely found sitting still when it comes to other spirits, but she does have a breaking point. If push ever comes to shove her adamant streak springs into action, usually accompanied by the brilliantly petty display of flying into the offender's face while angrily noting their usual lack of opposable thumbs. @Sincerity11

I'm sorry to say that reservations won't be possible. Whether or not you get in is based on the amount of applications I receive. I'll likely keep this open for a few weeks. If I don't receive more than six applications, then your entry into the roleplay will be guaranteed. Otherwise, joining will be based on who I think will mesh best together as a group.

Yes, I'll be determining what animal your character is. This will depend on their personality as well as their history.

For the age section of the character form, do we fill it out as the age the character died, or the age they are in their "spirit body"?
