Four teens entered the lab of the famous professor Juniper. Excited, anxious, impatient, these were the next generation of trainers, and their legend would start today.

A woman in lab coat glanced up from the files she was reading on a PC, her green eyes taking in each one of them before going back to the screen and typing something in. Finally, she stood up and approached them with a warm smile, a pokeball in hand. “Ah, welcome. My name is Professor Juniper. Everyone calls me the Pokemon Professor!”

She released her pokemon and a grey fluffy rodent-like creature appeared from the flash of light. It cooed at them and wove between their legs before darting back to the Professor.

“I don’t think I need to introduce you to the notion of pokemon, but let me introduce you to my little friend, Minccino.” Said pokemon waved its tail in greeting. “Humans live happily together with Pokemon, living and working together, we complement each other. We help each other out to complete difficult tasks. Having Pokemon battle one another is particularly popular, and it deepens the bond between people and Pokemon. And that is why I research Pokemon.

“Well, that’s enough for me. I’ve already looked at your files and prepared all you need to begin your journey. Let’s get to the part we’re all excited for!” She opened a case with three pokeballs inside, stickers depicting a leaf, a drop and a flame told the trainers-to-be what pokemon was waiting inside. “You can claim your starter in the order I received your files, so Carmen, Darius and Charlotte.”

She called the last teen before she could start to panic about not having a pokemon. “You are Kyrin, correct? I have something prepared for you too, of course. Come here.”

She opened a drawer from one of the cabinets and took out two pokeballs. One had a lighting bolt, the other a feather. “I thought I would take a page out of Professor Oak’s book and gift you an electric type.“ She released the first pokemon. An Emolga glided down and looked up at the two human curiously. “But then I received a call last week. An Ace trainer had found an egg on Victory Road and hatched it, only to have already caught it’s evolved form beforehand. So he sent the newborn to me.” She release a Rufflet and it tilted it’s head at the Emolga. Soon the two Pokemon were rough-housing on the floor between the two humans. The Professor chuckled and looked at Kyrin. “Pick one, and it’ll be yours.”

((make sure to have the pokemon you claimed be in Bold. I will post your pokemon’s info as soon as I can))

“Ah, yes,” she said to the whole room. “Don’t forget to grab these on your way out.” She pointed to four boxes with their names on them. Inside were the items promised to the new trainers.

{Every trainer has received $1000, one Potion, 10 pokeballs, a pokedex, a map, a badge case, and an Xtransceiver with Professor Jupiter’s number in it}

“Don’t forget, in exchange for my sponsorship, I ask you to scan every pokemon you can find. You don’t need to catch them of course, but be sure to look through an area thoroughly. The more data I have, the further my research will go. Now off with you! The whole world is open for you to explore!”

Kyrin glanced at her three comrades as they debated which starter to pick. Turning as Professor Juniper called her, she watched the Rufflet and Emolga curiously.

"Woah." She was surprised as Professor Juniper asked her to pick one of them. "Oh, okay..."

She kneeled down to observe the two Pokemon better, and the Rufflet stopped to look up at her. The Emolga stopped its tussling and both of the Pokemon stared up at Kyrin with expecting eyes.

Kyrin reached out and patted the Rufflet's feathery head. "Professor Juniper, I pick Rufflet."

The eaglet let out a surprised chirp as Kyrin picked it up. Kyrin gave the Emolga a pat too before it scampered back to Professor Juniper.

"Alright then!" The Professor recalled Emolga and gave Kyrin Rufflet's pokeball, then locked eyes with her with a serious expression.

"There's a few things you must be aware of with Rufflets. They evolve very late in their lives. You might get your eighth badge with Rufflet still not showing any signs of evolving. They are also an extremely competitive species, and will start fights with anything, even much stronger pokemon than them." She sighed. "What I'm saying is, training him will be a long and hard journey, but since it was hatched in captivity -rare for this species- I'm hopeful he will be manageable for a new trainer."

She then smiled reassuringly and glanced at the three other trainers. "You won't be alone, though. Travelling as a group is often more productive, that's why I wanted this batch of trainers to do so. My previous batch were friends, but they decided to travel alone. Perhaps you'll run into them during your travels.

"Anyway, I have your files to update. Good luck on your journey!"

With that, the Professor went back to sit in front of her screen and register the chosen pokemon to each trainer.

Carmen // Professor Juniper's Lab, Nuvema Town

Carmen stared at the three Pokeballs. This moment would change her life. A smile cracked across her face. She reached towards the one with the water droplet on it, tapping it slightly. Carmen glanced up at Prof. Juniper, tapping away on her computer. "How about this one?" she asked.

Before anyone could answer, a flash of light came from the red-and-white orb. She stumbled back to see a short, teal Pokemon standing in front of her, staring at her confusedly. A sea shell glimmered on it's chest.

Carmen hopped up, spinning on one heal towards Prof. Juniper. "I think my partner will be Oshawott!" She looked down at the small Pokemon. "Welcome to the team, buddy!"

Darius Kollins
Location: Juniper Institute for Pokemon Research, Nuvema Town
Darius leaned against a bookshelf, watching as Kyrin and Carmen selected their partners. He raised an eyebrow when Kyrin chose Rufflet- it was a strong Pokemon, to be sure, but he'd expected someone like her to gravitate towards the Emolga.

When it was his turn, he casually walked up and considered his options. Of Snivy and Tepig, he liked Snivy more. He silently wished that he could have gotten Oshawott, but he'd make do. He selected the leaf-decorated Pokeball and immediately pressed the white button on the front, letting the Grass-type out.

Snivy looked up at the new trainer that had let her out of that terribly confining Pokeball; why did humans think she was comfortable in there? She gave a sniff as she judged the boy who was to be her trainer. She was hoping for a girl, but as boys went, this one didn't seem too bad.

Darius laughed at Snivy's actions. "You're a bit of a condescending vine, aren't you?" His voice carried a light Galarian accent. He turned to Professor Juniper. "She's perfect, I'll take her."

Charlotte Battenburg // Bus to Nuvema Town
Charlotte slouched in her seat, head pressed on the bus's window, and listened to her father lecture on her phone.

"Remember, only a small percentage of trainers even complete the gym challenge, let alone stand a chance against the Elite Four. If you really want to do well, you need to remember not to mingle with or get too comfortable with other trainers your age. You are aiming above them."

"Yes, father." Charlotte felt uncomfortable with this conclusion, but it was probably true. As a professor in a Pokemon-related field, Charlotte trusted that he had some insights on what made a trainer successful.

"These trainers sponsored by Professor Juniper are probably higher tier than the rest, but still regular kids. You have a good upbringing and more resources, and you should easily be leading that pack from day one."

"...Yes," she had some doubts about this but kept it down.

There was a pause on her father's end as he uncharacteristically struggled to find his words.

"Hm... you know while being a trainer is not as respected of a path as what your brother is doing, it is still hard mental, emotional, and physical work. Your mother and I know what you're capable of, so if it ends up being too hard for you, you can always come back home and-"

Charlotte hung up before he could finish and shoved her phone forcibly into her bag, startling the person next to her. The rest of the trip was spent silently fuming.

Charlotte Battenburg // Juniper's lab, Nuvema Town

Charlotte remembered this conversation as she stood in the lab, half paying attention to Juniper and mostly observing the other three teens. She couldn't really tell anything from watching, but was immediately interested in the fact that one of the other trainers was receiving special treatment from Juniper and rare Pokemon. She wondered if that meant if that trainer had some special connections as well.

After that trainer received their Pokemon, the other three were called up. Without hesitation, Charlotte picked up Tepig's pokeball. She had spent the last few nights frantically researching the gym challenge and regional wild Pokemon, and Tepig was the clear best choice. Fire types were relatively rare in Unova, and the fighting-fire type matchup was advantageous for the first few gyms and routes. Charlotte was planning to make a strong first impression and establishing her standing among the group by breezing through the beginning of the journey.

Tepig was released from the pokeball in a flash of light, which jolted her out of her thoughts- what was she supposed to do now? For all her research and high hopes, she had never actually interacted with a Pokemon that wasn't a pet before, much less than one she owned. Was she supposed to pet it or something? Hug it? She looked around at the other teens. They all seemed much more comfortable- the boy was joking around with his Snivy somehow and the girl with the Rufflet was actually petting both the Rufflet and Emolga? The Tepig stared back at her inquisitively.

To cover up her awkwardness, Charlotte grabbed the Pokedex, registered her Tepig, and pointed it at the other Pokemon to register them too. Hopefully Juniper would think she was diligent then, instead of picking up on her inexperience.

Professor Juniper // Her Lab, Nuvema Town

The professor finished updating everyone's files with a pleased smile. "I'm glad you all got a pokemon you are pleased with. I can see you all getting far. Don't forget, pokemon are creatures with their own desires and emotions, but they are also much more simple beings than humans. They will need you to navigate the human world, and you will need them in turn. Now enough talk, go, shoo, take over the world."

She winked at them playfully and turned back to her work.

After the four trainers filtered out with their new partners in tow, Professor Juniper shared a mischievous look with Minccino. She took out her xtransceiver and hit the call button.

"Professor?" a feminine voice answered. "Did you send them off?"

"Yes I did," she answered. "Are you in place?"

"Sure am. Should I call them over, or..." the voice trailed off.

"No, stay inconspicuous. I want to see what they will do without external interference."

A giggle. "You got it, Professor!" And the call ended.

Professor Juniper shared a snicker with Minccino and released another pokemon. "Teleport to Accumula Town."
