TOPIC | Suggestion: Gender Change Scroll
1 2
We have scrolls of maturity and scrolls of eternal youth and scrolls to randomly change a dragons colors and scrolls to change it's genes and even what breed of dragon it is, but we do not yet have gender changing scrolls and that to me is kind of astonishing.

I mean I understand that the idea could cause controversy but really, in a world of magic where so much is mutable, it seems implausible that the one fixed feature not dependent on flight alignment should be a dragon's biological sex.

Introducing gender change scrolls would be extremely helpful both in terms of customization and in facilitating breeding projects where you have two dragons of the exact colors you need but they are the same gender and therefore incompatible for breeding.

It would also open up a whole new world of possibility regarding dragons' personal narratives and clan lore and cool storytelling things like that. Practical use plus cool narrative impact; I say it's a win-win.

This is a rather divided topic within the suggestion forum. I personally do not want to see a sex change scroll that would allow you to change the sex and then be able to breed according to the newly assigned sex (IE You have two males, you change one of them to a female and then you would be able to breed the male to the female). I'd rather not see this for a couple of reasons:

First of all, it could probably involve having to recode a fair amount of the breeding/display system which I think could be better spent adding new features rather than recoding a system that works perfectly fine the way it is. The reason I say it could involve a fair amount of recoding is depending on how the lineage is stored in the database the system could have a fit over trying to figure out how to display the parents when one of them has been sex changed so they are now the same sex since there is no longer a male and a female parent to display first and second.

The second reason I don't like this is because it would remove some of the challenge involved in breeding since sex is the only thing you can't change and something should remain static. You can change color by using a scatter scroll and you can ensure the hatchlings are of a particular element by breeding it in the appropriate nest

I'd personally prefer to see a cosmetic change (changes the image to the opposite sex, so your male dragon displays a female dragon image, but he is still a male dragon so he still can only breed with females so the breeding pool for him doesn't change). Alternatively if there wouldn't be a coding issue like mentioned above (or there were additional restrictions like must never have been bred to avoid the entire potential coding issue) and it actually changes the sex then that individual becomes unbreedable.

Another possibility might be to add a pair of items (a male and a female version) that would allow a player to skew the sex ratio of a nest to make breeding projects slightly easier. For example instead of the 50/50 that is normal, it would shift it to something like 70/30 to the selected sex)

I don't really how it is implausible. Even within a fantasy world there must be rules and constants. So far, the way this particular fantasy world is set up, sex is a fixed point. (this is also for the breeding part of the game)

Dragonsage pretty much summed up my reasons against it as well.

It would harm the game from an economic standpoint in that a person can suddenly start breeding dragons that were no eligible to breed before, thus adding more dragons to the market, and potentially lowering 'niche' markets by being able to breed two dragons that were originally of the same sex.

It would also make it too easy from a difficulty standpoint of being able to take a dragon off the market and just scrolling it to the dragon you want: Chose a dragon with the right colors, and change genes, breed, sex...

Also, the argument using breed and gene change scrolls, to me, is like comparing apples to oranges. Breed/Gene change scrolls are the only way to get new breeds and genes into the game (except for the nocturne egg, but I don't think many people want to have ALL new breeds introduced that way). This is the way the game was set up and it was coded with that in mind. We do not need a scroll to introduce a sex into the game, we already have them. So a sex change scroll would be purely aesthetic, introducing nothing to the game that wasn't already there. If you can breed a dragon of the wrong sex, you can breed an identical dragon of the right sex. It just might take time.

You are not the first to suggest this nor will you be the last. The static unchangeable sex of a dragon keeps some of the challenge in creating the "perfect" dragon.

Either way this is what the Administration has said on this.

Are we ever going to get sex change scrolls?

We have no plans to release an item like this.

Now if you are talking about the "gender" of a dragon that means a dragon is a Male but shows more Feminine characteristics or a Female that is considered more masculine that can be written into your bio without the need for a scroll.

If you are talking about changing a male into a female or a female into a male for breeding purposes sorry the administration has already said no.

Also in real life if someone decides to undergo a Sex change operation or as some say a Gender reassignment procedure they would no longer be able to procreate after the change was completed.

No support.

@DragonSage That's a fair point about the coding.

@Jemadar I honestly don't think it would impact the game too badly from an economic standpoint if the scrolls were gem only availability and expensive enough that people still had incentive to go the incentive to go the more time consuming route of breeding projects, but the concern is a valid one nonetheless.

@Qnyxz I do not appreciate your condescending tone. I do, however, appreciate your citation of a precedent.

I am well aware that I can do what I wish in a dragon's bio.

I do not see as to why you think that the limitations of modern medical technology, (which, I might add, is improving all the time,) should interfere with fictional dragon magic, and I honestly don't know what it is you were going for with that one.

In any case, the current commonly accepted medical terminology is Gender Affirming Surgery, or Sex Reassignment Surgery if you're reading an old textbook or medical journal.

The price wouldn't be worth it. Only very few dragons would be worth it, because you can get a dragon with the same colors by breeding again.

It would be worth it for very low IDs (5 digits and below), Gen 1 triples and Gen 1 Imperials. For everything else? Breeding again would be more worthwhile, and you have more bang for your buck.

It would only be useful for dragons that cannot be replaced by breeding projects.

Nah I don't support gender change scrolls. For one thing, they'd probably break the FR breeding coding seeing as the males are always listed first and the female's second in all dragon parent listing. For another the admins have already said that they probably won't release an item like this. Another reason is that changing a dragon's gender lorewise could probably be done in Sornieth with magic but that's not really the issue. The issue is that it'd make breeding too easy. Breeding your dream dragon should be a challenge. Its the limitations that you have to work around that make the final end product that much more sentimental and worth it.

It you'd like a gender change for lore reasons for your derg then how about lobby for a pose change scroll instead? The dragon would remain its original gender but would have the art of the other gender. Also this wouldn't break any site coding!

Also I do not believe Qnyxz was meaning to sound condescending to you. This is a suggestion that is brought up a lot and every time they do we have to explain our reasons why we're against them all over again. After awhile it gets a little tiring and sometimes responses aren't as kind sounding as they usually are. Its not a knock against you personally.

I agree with the others, sorry, no support.
The sex of our dragons is the only, single thing we cannot change or influence in some way in our dragons and a breeding game needs some static elements to remain just somewhat entertaining and a challenge, otherwise you could just buy any dragon from the ah and change it into what you want with enough cash.

I do, however, support the popular Pose Change Scroll suggestion and I could support a gem shop item that could slightly increase the chance of a certain gender for a nest.

This comes up pretty often, actually, and every time I have to say no support. This would not only make the game much, much easier but it would also mean a lot of coding. Plus the fact this is a breeding game, not a "Turn every dragon into the dragon you want" game.

This game doesn't need to be made any easier.

No support - sex change and a dragon's ID (although these aren't really looked at unless they are low numbers/ unique) are the only static elements when it comes to breeding (eyes to a point but you can somewhat get around those with nest rentals). If you we're able to change sex then there would be no point in breeding dragons and it would take away from the actual challenge of the game - breed to get your perfect dragon.

Instead what has been proposed and accepted is a pose change scroll - switch the art between male and female dragons.
