How about a contest where we users can design a gene and then submit it, but there is a twist. We the users also get a say in which design wins. Borrowing the idea from Dancing with the Stars, the userbase gets 50% of the vote and the admins/art team whatever also get 50% of the vote.
The idea behind this is simple, it ensures that the winning design will be one that both the players and the staff like. That way if the userbase likes a design, but the staff don't, it doesn't win, but also if the staff like a design, but the players don't, it also doesn't get implemented. It should also give you some valuable insight as to what genes we actually like.
As for the prizes, I was thinking credit on the gene scroll, a good quantity of gems and a free copy of gene once it's implemented.
So any comments or suggestions guys?

I can't think of any cons to this atm.
I really like this idea, in that it let's the userbase put in too.
What would be interesting is if we have themes? Like, maybe the staff gives keywords like 'geometric' or 'galaxy' etc.
I think I'd add maybe we can have Primary/Secondary contest (matching), and terts have seperate contests.

I could only support this if the contest was description only (no visuals). Artists already have enough of an advantage on site as it is.

chespin I just don't see how that could be valid for this though. I mean consider thylacine, the idea itself is sound, but a lot of people hated the gradient on it. If you can only use words, then an idea which sounds great on paper could end up being released in a form that people
don't like.
The whole idea behind this is that the player base gets a say in what design is chosen. Heck I can't draw if my life depended on it, but I would love the chance to get to vote on a future gene.

chespin Ok perhaps the contest could have two categories, one prize for best visual and one for best written description.

The thing is you could love how a gene works on one breed but hate it on others. Would you have to draw every current breed in the gene in both poses? And if the user did do the art what about future breeds? The gene would have to fit the site art.
They'd really need to narrow the field first before we could do voting and even then I still wonder if it'd be come a popularity contest. That and creating a gene was a kickstarter tier perk bought only by one person. I don't know if they want to give out that ability for free even for a contest.
It could work but for voting to be even viable I think the staff would need to narrow the entries down first.

If they do something like this then the entries should NOT be drawn on the dragon models. The site artists should do the final work. Players can submit their entry using words and visual guides (such as pictures or sketches) that way anyone can enter and submit their ideas, and those that are artistically inclined aren't at an advantage because they wouldn't be on a model

If this were to be done, chespin and wittykitsune make excellent points. Given those, this is what I propose:
a.) A two-tier contest would be best. I can't see people willingly reading lots of text for long periods of time (and a detailed gene could get wordy), so having a winner based on best visual design and a winner based on best descriptive design would level the playing field and allow it to be more inclusive. Plus, more genes. Yay more genes.
b.) Anonymity. Obviously it'd be hard to tell people not to say "Design x is mine!" on tumblr or whatever, but at least when voting through the site, don't show the username of the person responsible for each design. I don't do much FR off-site, so from where I stand it could help limit the influence of user popularity on the results.

I think I agree with DRagonsage and Chespin.
A gene designing contest is fine in theory, but it should only be a textual with examples type entry, no actual designing the gene. I think that they could run into problems down the road when they add new dragons with a gene that they didn't draw. Also, the artists would have to redraw the gene anyways to make it fit into their image generating software, so Ican see people complaining that the winning design doesn't fit how they thought it would look or how the original artist drew it if the site artists had to make changes to fit how genes work.
I think that what Zues is proposing would work.
1. For the Visual based contest, have them submit their ideas on one dragon breed (the one they feel shows it off best) in perhaps a couple of colors. (to show how it works across colors)
2. For the textual based contest, have perhaps a word limit.
If you enter one contest, you can't enter the other.
I don't really think anonymity would really work with how linked FR is with other social media sites. However, they could potentially set up some sort of system with all the visual gene examples on one page (or multiple pages) and you can 'rate' them or perhaps pick out the ones you like, then you get a page with only those, and you keep narrowing it down until you have one chosen. This would probably work best if there are multiple entries on multiple pages as I often want to compare between entries to see which ones I like best. This would give me a way to do so.
So basically, yes, perhaps users could design a gene, but the site artists still draw the gene (they most likely would anyways to get it into the image generating software so it is compatible with the site) and have a two tier, with the same rewards, system where users can only enter one. (to prevent someone from entering one contest, then entering another and winning both)
