TOPIC | Night/dark mode or site themes!
1 2 3 4
Most sites and apps used to have a tendency to go with a basic white color by default, which is very difficult on people like me. I'm rather sensitive to the bright white light I'm continuously staring at. I get terribly exhausted or even get headaches because of it.

Gradually though it seems sites and apps are picking up on that problem and creating a dark theme or night mode, where the generic white bits are swapped out for a black or dark grey tone. It is much more easygoing on the eyes and like that, fixes a lot of issues for people like me.

Unfortunately it does not seem to be a thing on Flight Rising (just yet). For instance when I'm grinding at the coliseum, I can't hold out long due to the white background, unless I minimize the browser to minimize any white bits. One could argue that is a good thing as it automatically prevents me from playing too long and whatnot, but let's be realistic here: If the color there exhausts me, I'll just drop my grind at that point, and open another site or app where I do have a dark theme, or like I said, I simply minimize the window. I think my playtime should be my choice, not something I'm forced into over something as silly as a background color.

So perhaps it is something the site operators are wiling to consider? A simple option where you can decide between dark or light theme, or day or night mode. I think it's pretty self-explanatory; I'm pretty sure most anyone knows some apps or sites making use of this principle.

I was even thinking it might be used beyond just a little quality of life kind of thing; Perhaps create all sorts of available site themes that are unlocked through events or bought from stores or something along these lines. Similar to how vistas allow you to give a little personal touch to your forum posts, why not have the entire site in a theme that's pleasant to you personally? Perhaps you're in the light flight and would love to see a header of Glittermom, all the while enjoying a yellow, glittery theme and a pastel yellow background while playing the game? Or you would love a theme around the water flight with its relaxing blue tones, including a light blue background? Or a festive theme around New Years or Halloween etc. The possibilities are endless. So long as there is a theme that involves a black background, I'm good to go. :)

Constructive criticism is much appreciated. I do hope this is a possible option toward the (near) future.

Dark mode is something I'd really really like to see, for the exact reason you stated. It burns my eyes doing Coli. The difference here is that I still keep going.

Dark Mode is life.

I support this.

This will always get my support. Anything that isn't KETCHUP RED in my face will. Dark mode would be amazing. It would also be amazing for us to earn site themes, like flight and deity based ones, through gameplay and whatnot.

If writers are supposed to "show not tell," why are we called "storytellers" and not "storyshow-ers"?
There are also themes I imagine would be too bright to my liking (just thinking if they'd release a bright pink one for valentines... Ehhhh) But I think the choice to personalize your interface to your liking would be great. To each their own, right? I don't have to like it for someone else to do so. :)

Or perhaps just dark mode + a "forced" theme for holidays? Eg. a shadow flight theme for the upcoming holiday, or maybe a bright pink one just for valentines, all the while allowing players to choose between day and night mode for the overall bright white or black bits of the site?

Dude, I feel ya on the headaches. I work at Amazon staring at bright screens and shizz all day, and if I'm gonna come home and stare at another screen, by golly it's gonna be dark enough to tolerate. Personally, I acquired some outside assistance. If you'd like a dark theme that's immediately available, the one I use is via Stylish for Google Chrome, but I think Stylish is available for other things too - you'd have to look up your shtuff ta find out. If it isn't, though, then the customization of Chrome is pretty diddly dang awesome if I do say so myself, and I highly recommend the switch for the sake of having stuff like Stylish, even if it really only is for darkening your derg experience c: (If you're primarily a moblie user, however, I'm sorry but I got nuttin' :c) Anyhoo, full, unending support for having a dark theme that isn't outside of FR. I would MUCH rather be able to customize the experience on site than be required to look for outside solutions to basic problems like this. Lots of websites have dark modes and for a website as bright and glaring white as FR, I am mildly surprised that they haven't implemented this already. I don't really blame them, as there are higher priority issues that they face, but I would be one happy camper if I could have FR in dark mode when I'm not using my own stylized computer, for example. Regarding this creative little diddy though:
I was even thinking it might be used beyond just a little quality of life kind of thing; Perhaps create all sorts of available site themes that are unlocked through events or bought from stores or something along these lines. Save for that little detail, you've totally got my support! c: I love this idea! Now I completely understand that this would be one heckuva thing to do all the art for and coding, but I think it'd be well worth it. It'd be a great treasure sink (not to mention coli, gem MP, swipp, etc.) to slap into the MP, and I think it would be a wonderful personal touch that would improve the experience of FR overall.

@CartelSaide Not a mobile user, but it definitely is important to consider making it work for users of both pc and mobile. I must say however, I use chrome add-ons for a lot of sites to get a dark theme when they don't offer one, but I heard on flight rising using add-ons is an offense and might get you banned. I think it is rather unfair as altering the color of the site does not seem like an unfair advantage or anything breaking gameplay, but if it is within the rules, that is not for me to argue against and I'd preferably not risk my account for the sake of something I can only hope they by default implement.

Another argument would be, even if Flight Rising accepted this, fact is you don't know how safe any tools and add-ons installed out of the game are and whether they implement security risks. So by all means it is not something they can promote in the sense where it is out of their might if an add-on causes viruses and the likes.

For the second part, it was just an example. Though for instance they did go with a Turkey theme around thanksgiving and have been known to do minor things for valentines and the likes. But working around just on-site holidays, flights or other themes works fine all the same. Similar to how vistas work.
I merely think in this case using a reallife holiday might be less of an issue as it only shows to you personally. Someone who isn't pro-Christmas for instance does not have to use the theme or see it in any way if they do not wish for it. But like I said, I was only giving certain holidays as an example to begin with.

As an avid html/css geek, I cannot imagine it would require much more effort to implement into the game than introducing a new vista or familiar. There's not much more to it than a header and selecting a different color palette for already existing elements, though of course I could be mistaken and it is up to the moderators to decide.

I do believe there are opportunities to introduce a fun personalization aspect along with a new moneysink for us users which many would happily lay down some treasure or gems for. You even made me think they could take it even further. They could implement it in a way similar to user-made skins and accents where people are given an option to create their own custom site theme. It won't hinder anyone else as it only shows to the user, but creates both an extra opportunity for an even more personal touch, and a little moneysink to benefit the site. :)

@Piratewolfie - It's my understanding that the only things like this that are against the rules are things that impact gameplay directly (for example a one-click button for bonding with all your familiars at once, or bots to auto-grind in the coli, which were issues once upon a time and why the rule was put in place to begin with). I've been on FR since 4 months after its launch and I've used Stylish+Chrome Add-ons on FR* for 90% of that time with zero issues from FR staff nor viruses, or anything for that matter. I'm not 100% sure what the policy for Stylish is for controlling virus stuff, but I can at least say that in the 6 or so years I've used Stylish specifically, I have not once had a virus because of it. Obviously if you learn otherwise I would appreciate the heads up so I can change my shizz up, but I really don't believe it's a problem c: I respect your choices no matter what, but I just wanted to letcha know why I'm personally not concerned and still recommend it if you change your mind ^w^

Valid point with the turkeys and valentine's; those slipped my mind lolz As said, I'm not against them, but I just don't foresee it being something they do, or at the very least not something they do early into implementing the feature (assuming they did). I would love to see what they came up with if they did though!

Yes, the art would certainly be the primary workload, and I personally have barely dabbled in the art of coding, so I'll take your word for it c: Regardless of how difficult/easy it is, I would still LOVE to see it implemented. It's such a creative idea for customization!

*for clarification's sake, I only use add-ons like the dark theme, move status box, expand bio, highlight baldwin/swipp stuff, etc. Even if it wasn't against the rules, I don't like nor use things that fiddle with the gameplay; it makes me feel like I didn't truly earn my stuff.

@CartelSaide I get it really, these were my ideas on the matter as well, but upon talking it over with people they said only a moderator can give me a conclusive answer, but they did say they saw people get banned for using similar things. Normally in cases like this I'd make a side account to try things out and see if I get trouble for it, but since that is prohibited on Flight Rising as well, that's not an option either. I'd simply prefer not taking the risk of losing this account over something so small.

Perhaps you know how to add an image to a post here? that's the gist of it. A site is built up out of small tags saying "an image goes here" "a text goes here" "this link goes here". And if you already have the generic setup ready, it is as simple as changing the tag that says "the header goes here" to a different one, along with where you say "this color is red" it now has to say "this color is blue" for instance. If that makes any sense. Of course I could be underestimating the workload, but overall a mere lay-out is not severely heavy on the code. :) Still, I imagine if they were to consider one such system, it would take longer to implement than a simple night mode to say the least.

@Piratewolfie - Totally fair. I don't want you to lose your account either, I just want you to stop having headaches lolz Either way, though, I hope a mod can clarify for us at some point, though, just so that we can be more certain. It would be nice to know if I'm doing something wrong lolz

That makes sense, I understand :3 Thanks for the clarification!
