I noticed that it seems to require I tap my laptop pad twice to select a tile (as opposed to actually pressing the button on the track pad) and that tiles do not select easily. Currently it requires 3 or often 4 to 5 light taps on the track pad to actually select a tile, as it wants to highlight the entire page with a double tap. I have been using the clicker on my track pad but it is much less comfortable to do so.
It's entirely possible this might just be a problem with my laptop, the only reason I bring it up is because other buttons within the game (like the refresh button) do not require a double tap to easily select. I think it would make the game much easier and more comfortable to play if we were able to single click the tiles to select them.

I use a wireless mouse for all my gameplay on my laptop. But I also play FFXIV on it as well and the actual track pad does not play nice with an mmo.

I also use my laptop trackpad, and while I typically keep my finger on it to move the mouse and then use an actual press to click for fairgrounds (it feels faster), I just tried tap to click in mahjong and it does in fact seem to be doing something wonky and not detecting every time. This may be more of a bug than a suggestion, but I'd definitely like to see it fixed either way!
