TOPIC | Outdated desc for Snowflake Urchin
1 2 3 4
The description for the Snowflake Urchin food item makes fun of "special snowflakes" which is an outdated and derogatory term used against people in marginalized groups. I'm sure that many people (including myself) would rather see a more pleasant description for it than the one it has currently. [item=Snowflake Urchin] The same thing goes for the "Special Snowflakes" accent, although I don't know if the actual name for items can be changed. It would be nice to see something less offensive as well though. [item=Accent: Special Snowflakes] I've submitted a suggestion on its database entry for it to be changed and I ask for anyone else who is interested in the idea to submit one too. Accent: Special Snowflakes

I've submitted a suggestion on its database entry for it to be changed and I ask for anyone else who is interested in the idea to submit one too.

I've never seen the term "special snowflake" used against a marginalized group. In my experience (which might not match everyone else's), I've always seen it used against people who are throwing a fit and acting entitled.

Example:
Customer at a Theater: What do you mean the movie is sold out! I demand you make space for me this moment!
Customer in Line Behind: Well aren't you a special little snowflake.

Now, I don't care one way or another if they change this or not. But if they do, I just want to mention that, iirc, there's also a Tomo question about that item. So if the description is changed, the trivia question needs to go.

Pings are disabled.

If writers are supposed to "show not tell," why are we called "storytellers" and not "storyshow-ers"?
The Tomo question is actually how I came across the description in the first place, and I agree that if the description changes then the question would need to be removed/altered as well. And while I hear you out on your experiences, there's no doubt that "special snowflake" has been used by conservative/right-wing people to belittle marginalized folks. The term probably became more normalized like how "triggered" has, but that doesn't mean it's still okay to use.

I believe the mods have asked that concerns like this be sent directly to the Admins/Staff via a Contact Us ticket due to these kinds of discussions concerning real world matters and politics.

Edit: It's a Contact Us ticket, not a Support ticket.

I think you’re reading way too much into it and finding offense where there really is none really there. Same as with the descriptions of the plague recolors mentioning being edgy.

Eh. I'm with Gemajgall here, sadly; special snowflake is a term I almost exclusively see aimed at self-important people, not marginalized people. While I don't doubt it's been used in harmful contexts, I don't feel the actual etymology of the term has changed to the point where using it in its original meaning - which is what this is - has become offensive.

It could be we just walk in different circles and hear different discussions. But as it stands, I'm not feeling this change.

No support for changing a harmless item description/title, it poses no harmful impact to gameplay.

I usually hear it used as a stand in for "millennials" in general), but not nearly as often as I've heard it used in the manner Gemma described. Regardless of whether they choose to update the food item, they should absolutely not update the name of the UMA. There is nothing offensive about the name at all. It's a snowflake-themed accent. This whole topic strikes me as a little on-the-nose, actually...

I think the urchin's description might be referring to the literal fact that no two snowflakes are the same
