TOPIC | Reconsider revamping the messages

Please. This is ridiculous that it is considered "finished". IT IS BROKEN. It has been broken since day one and instead of fixing it, multiple band-aids have been used.

Want proof? I have 300 pages of messages in my inbox. 300.

Well, why don't I just delete them then?

If you've never had this problem or can't understand why it's a problem, let me explain.

You start on page 1. There's some recent messages that you want to keep so INSTEAD OF HAVING FOLDERS or some sensical way of keeping these organized, you have to click until say, page 3. There is no way to use the url bar or something to automatically go to page 3. You must click.

If you delete a message, it boots you back to page 1, making you manually click back to page 3.

Do you see the problem?

If I want to go to page 40, I have to click a button 40 times, delete a few messages then click all the way to page 40 again to see what's now on page 40. NOBODY HAS TIME FOR THAT.

I think the biggest problem here, the scariest thing, is that I am not someone who regularly gets messages.

I am not an accent artist.

I am not an artist so I don't get commissions.

I do not PM my friends.

So what does the inbox of those people look like? How many messages must they have accumulated over the years? How many pages of messages do you still have?

In March of 2016 it was identified as a real problem for the site.

Goodbye, Message Center!

So, here's a fun fact: Almost 85% of the private messages sent on Flight Rising are sent by the Auction House. 85! Percent! Not only is that number ridiculously high, it also accounts for quite a bit of a performance hit. That is why one of our biggest priorities for the revamped version of the Auction House is to completely divorce it from the Message Center.

Our current plans are to hit the following goals:

Items purchased from the Auction House are sent directly to your Hoard.
Expired items are sent directly back to your Hoard. (this is already happening)
All successful and unsuccessful auction notifications are moved into an "Activity Ledger" inside the Auction House itself.
Literally no more auction house-related messages at all, ever.

We'll gain a substantial performance boost by cutting out these automated messages,

Instead of giving us a way to organize our 300 pages of messages, the incoming flow was stemmed just a bit.

In May of 2019, there was still a problem. (duh?)

Since the site launched, we've employed a few different ways to deliver limited event items, such as Marva's craft boxes (from our April Fools event) and the Miniature Sornieth Globe familiar (from our Bounty of the Elements event).

As some may remember, when the site was young, these items were attached to private messages. As time went on and the player base grew, that became more and more taxing on the messaging system.

In short, there needs to be
-Folders
-A way to go to page number X

If we had such simple things, MAYBE players who have been here a long time like me would be able to clean their inboxes out after 7 long years and give us the performance bump that was mentioned. :)

your suggestion seems a bit confused but always support for some QoL Changes:

For any users who are not aware: "refactoring" is a Code development term that means: changing/upgrading the coding without changing what the code does,
So when they say "refactoring complete" I dont think they mean its never going to get updates again lol

When the staff say that the site was taking a performance hit, at the time* they meant that when the Old AH courier messages were being sent to players inboxes, the code doing the work of sending that message, was causing performance issue on the site.

Having the messages already there isn't the performance drop they were talking about.

I wasn't proactive at deleting auction expired messages back when we were in the bad times of every expired auction was a pm.

in general I'm not pm chatty but I've run a ton of dom programs in the past 4 years.

I'm at 719 pages inbox (which I've been slightly better at deleting as I go) and 1360 pages sent (which I don't delete as often because what if I need to confirm if I've paid for a thing). I just keep hoping there's not an unspecified max.

The only way I can handle dom programs is having a spreadsheet where I save every message address link to access later. but like a filter of this message has an attachment or message line contains "raffle donation" or filter from person x would be life changing.

(also reverting automatic attachment back down to 1 item instead of whole stack so pm sending and ah listing would have same default behavior)

Yes, we need this! It would also be much needed that when sending a message with items and forget to add a title/message all the items get removed. A fix for that would be amazing as well.

Support. I would love to be able to jump to specific pages (a function that exists almost everywhere else on the site!), or to sort/filter messages by different criteria: sender/receiver, date, words in subject title, etc.

Not sure as well how feasible it would be, but it would be nice if we could search our PMs for certain content, similar to Forum Search. I've had to refer back to older conversations at times, and even after clicking all the way back through nearly 400 pages, it's so difficult to discern which PM has what I need.

Defo support. I think a couple sorting options (unread, has attachments, starred), a starring system and a delete all button would do a world of good, aside from an improved pagination.

Tons of pages, no replies on chains, no folders. We need a better message center. I made a post days ago about revamping it too. I support this!

I always keep messages as "proof of purchases" for exchanges, auctions, haggles, skin submissions, and the like, so my inbox has 13 pages of unsortable, unsearchable messages I don't want to delete.

I think it would be an excellent addition to let us organize our messages, not just for QoL, but also to prevent important messages from being deleted or lost.
