While it would never happen I would be so into that sort of thing. I wish we could get "false parts" as apparel, like those wildclaw claws would look amazing on any breed. (No idea what they would do if equipped to a wildclaw, maybe bigger claws.)

In the
story it was noted that Baldwin's transformation wasn't like other breed changes, since they are instantaneous, and could only hold the appearance of breeds that existed. So his weird mutation could very well be unique for how it came about.
The bit about "cursed scrolls that could leave an unlucky dragon malformed and disfigured" is interesting though.

I would love something like this? Even if the extra part didn't have genes and was maybe just a blocked out color of the secondary (ex. no secondary genes on the extra wing, just the secondary color...)

What if at baldwin you could make scrolls that would give a dragon 1 random trait of another selected breed, bUt certain traits (or more than 3 any traits) made them gave them the same undressable status of ancients. If you breed two different breeds together there would be a 0.01% chance of this happening naturally. These mutations can be removed by a "scroll of normalcy"
