TOPIC | Keep inactive drags off front page?
1 2 3 4 5 6
I love sitting on the home page and refreshing so I can look through random lairs and comment telling people that their dragon was on the home page and giving a compliment or two. But it feels like half the dragons I click on are from inactive lairs. What's the point of showcasing inactive lairs? The feature should be for users that are active. I should mention that I can always click on users active, but even so there really isn't a reason for inactive lairs to show up on the front page. It's a little odd.

I searched to make sure this wouldn't be a duplicate thread, and there's one from over two years ago that phrased it as dragons without energy, which got bad reception so I'd like to not revive a long dead and poorly worded thread and clarify that when I say inactive lair, I don't mean lairs with starving dragons. Some people starve dragons or just don't bother with food, which I get.

Instead, I would suggest limiting accounts that haven't logged in for a certain amount of time from appearing. FR already keeps track of how long it's been since you last logged in, as they give you a free energy refill after a certain amount of days. A threshold of around six months without logging in would definitely keep inactive users off the home page, and I don't think anyone would take offense at not being able to show up if they haven't been on in that long. It wouldn't keep inactive lairs off the home page, but it would certainly limit it greatly! And it wouldn't affect people taking a short break from fr.

Anyway I just want to know if this bothers other people too, and if anyone else wants a change like this!

EDIT: I think there are great points on both sides of why inactive dragons should be kept on or off the home page, but I think it's going to get more intense than I intended upon making this thread if it continues(everyone has very strong views on this topic).

I also think that there's far more people in favor of keeping inactive dragons in the random spotlight- even though I don't agree, I think that trumps my own opinion and I've come to the conclusion that inactive dragons should NOT be restricted from the front page. I'd also like to thank everyone for being so respectful in here and also for letting me know their thoughts- there were a lot of things I hadn't considered, and even if I didn't change my mind it was all great food for thought! :)

I don't have an opinion either way, but I have seen a common rebuttal that usually boils down to: No support because I want to see pretty dragons, whether the user is active or not. Why does it matter?

The feature isn’t meant to showcase lairs/users; it’s meant to display a random unexalted dragon. Which it does perfectly. There might not be a reason for inactive lairs to show up, but there’s also no reason for them to not show up, or for active lairs to show up for that matter. One could argue that there is more reason for active lairs to be barred from showing up; as there may be people that *don’t* like/ are bothered by ‘front page’ comments. If you want to compliment a person’s dragon, Dragon Share works just fine.

No support; there is really no reason for this.

No support. If you want to only see active dragons, go to dragon share. The random dragon spotlight is the only place inactive dragons get to be shown off. Some of those dragons have had countless hours of work put into them, their outfit, or their accent, should their work not be shown in favor of someone’s fodder?

There is absolutely no real benefit to removing “inactive” dragons, so I can’t support this. It’s “random dragon”, not “random dragon, except for the ones that aren’t active”. If there was an energy/activity restriction it wouldn’t truly be random.

Here are just two reasons why people would want to see inactive lairs

-It gives us a window into the past to see how people managed with such limited gene and apparel choices
-Plenty of people get inspiration from skins/genes/colors/outfits on dragons with no energy. I couldn’t tell you how many projects have come from the random dragon.

This has been suggested a lot more often than two years ago with different phrasing (0 energy, inactive, dead, etc.) and its always received the exact same response.

The point is to show the various customization options available, which is why most sites that pride themselves on being able to breed or customize a pet have a random pet. In this case, we have the random dragon. The idea isn't to show "look how active we are." One could argue why not exalted dragons but, to be fair, those dragons aren't obtainable anymore in that they can't be bought back, sold, etc. Out of the system in a sense, so it shows those in lairs.

Eh, I agree with OP. I understand the disagreements, but I feel the same as OP for the same reasons. I love a chance to compliment someone randomly when they aren't expecting it. Maybe people could choose to not be included if they don't want random compliments. I don't know, I don't have a perfect solution but I share your feelings OP!

No support. You may not see the point in showing inactive lairs, but I don't see a point in not showing inactive lairs. Dragons are dragons regardless of how active the owners are. I would support being able to exclude your own dragons from being chosen, though.

No support. The random dragon on the front page is there to showcase examples of what players can do with their dragons to visitors. It shouldn't matter if the dragons featured are in an inactive lair, showing them briefly on the front page hurts absolutely no one.

[/quote] I think the main reason why exalted dragons (which I wouldn't mind showing up to be honest) is because they can't be dressed, and they don't show the 'stats' of colors, genes and breed/sex. Which means it isn't as good of an example for new or potential players. While long time players could pretty much tell what genes/colors the dragon has, potential players wouldn't. As for the idea of 'active dragons only so I can comment about them', you can still comment on inactive lairs, unless they are locked (which I am not sure they can show up). Also, there is a fairly popular suggestion about letting people 'turn off' profile comments, or at least say who could comment (friends only, everyone, etc..), so would this mean, if we limit it to active dragons only so players can comment on them, that those people who don't like profile comments wouldn't be able to have their dragons show up? After all, you wouldn't be able to comment on those dragons either. No support. As said, if you want to see active dragons, that is literally what dragon share is for, to show off and view active dragons. The random 'pet' feature, on any site I have been on, has been to showcase what can be done with the site pets, so it makes sense that they don't care about activity, because those dragons still show off what can be done with the site assets (once a blueprint is printed, it becomes a site asset).

It makes no difference either way, in my opinion.

I lean toward support, because it seems like there are a not-insignificant number of people who like to have their dragons featured. They like it when people comment that they've seen their dragon on the front page or whatever. I think that's a completely legitimate reason to want this change. In fact, it might be the only legitimate one because inactive people, by definition, can't care that their dragons are being featured because they don't even bother to visit the site.

But that's also why I would like the ability to turn off profile comments, perhaps alongside this change.

As for me, I think they could probably change it tomorrow and I have serious doubts that anyone would notice. There are pretty active dragons and pretty inactive dragons, so it's not like we'd be missing those. If that's all we're worried about, then I don't think that's a good reason. Because if we're worried about "pretty dragons" we're not losing anything.
