As one of those people with smaller screens, a big hearty [i]yes[/i] to this causing way [i]more[/i] issues for us instead of less.
Any of the options you proposed would be wonderful, and I'm really discouraged that this was the solution instead. [emoji=ridgeback sad size=1] Having to zoom out to unreadable levels just to do repeatable dailies without having to scroll on every single screen was already unfun with familiar bonding (and exalting), but at least that one has a keybind to help ease the frustration.

PLEASE, this is so annoying and it makes me not wanna gather cause I have to either scroll down 15 times in a row or zoom out (which makes it harder for me to see the items I get as my eyesight is poorly).
Just do something to get rid of that space. Stop shoving the button at the bottom. I'd personally prefer the bonus item was under the button instead.

It’s actually made gathering even worse for me. I have to scroll down every time I want to gather something. I don’t know why this was the solution. They should just treat it like festival currency.

Prior to this change, gathering was a simple one-click thing where I can go through all my turns but now I have to scroll down just to do so. It is needlessly tedious and did not have to be a thing.

As one of the people who was suggesting that they make it so the buttons don't jump around, I feel bad saying this, but I also wish it had been one of the other solutions. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they listen and implemented the suggestion as fast as they did, so I don't mean to sound ungrateful! But...
The white space is really big. It feels weirdly empty. I could live with that if it were the only issue, but it does end up requiring scrolling on certain screens, which kind if defeats the whole purpose! I think having the bonus drops in line with other drops, just like fest stuff, would be just fine. The "put the bonus loot under the gather button" idea is interesting as well, I could see that! Regardless of the placement solution, always support for keybinds/keyboard support/accessibility. It's not something that I personally need, but other people might need it and I would probably use it as well if it were implemented!

I am happy for the fix because it's much better than having the gathering buttons jump around! However it could be improved or hotkeys for gathering could be implemented. I think I most like the idea of having special items be highlighted.

Yep, support. For this Chromebook, it is right at the bottom. Any lower and it would make me scroll. I can't imagine how it's like for mobile users with smaller screens.
