The tertiary gene is a gene that is not tied to a specific location on the dragon. In terms of layer order, it is layered above any existing primary/secondary colors and genes. It comes in the 67 colors available, and draws from your dragon's tertiary color. If you have a suggestion for a tertiary gene, post it here. Images that help get your point across are welcome.

Quote:
To help ensure that your suggestion has the best chance of being used, consider the following:
 • Would the gene work in all 67 colors?
 • How well would the gene mix-and-match with existing primary and secondary genes?
 • Would the gene look good across all breeds of dragon?
 • Are there any line art edits involved? If so, they should be minor, as large edits will make equipment no longer fit. Edits cannot interfere with the way that the eyes and secondary pieces of the dragon work with the body shape.
 • Is the gene different enough from existing genes that it warrants being made?

Spots could be along the joints and sides. For duller colors; they could use warmer variations and/or lighter shades around the outside or on top of the main color to give it more of a glow; in some cases it might be that a ring around the tertiary glows rather than the tertiary being the glow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following are artwork from the flight rising preview video previewing two tertiary markings that have not yet been released. The short description of Runic is described below, but the discussion in the thread has decent information. DragonSage linked it in the post above.

The primary feature of the Runic gene is one or more lines of mystic rune looking things (potentially the already present runes from the Fairegrounds game, thought that need not necessarily be the case) in the tertiary color that run along the edges of the wings, and possibly down the legs/arms. In THEORY one could also put a big cool looking rune in the middle of the dragon's forehead (possibly related to their species?) though there may be those who would NOT like that idea. The idea is to make our mystic dragons a little more so.

The ******* Links are correct. There's a bug preventing direct Forum URLs.
Mistfall suggested this as a primary gene, but I wanted to come suggest it here because I personally think it would work much better as a tertiary.

Bioluminescent spots. They could be along the wing edges and possibly the wing arm, on any frills/horns the different breeds have, maybe a few under the eyes, down along the back and tail... I'll use the PSDs and try out a few examples to post cuz I'm interested in actually seeing it myself and playing around with what would look best XD

Here's a Guardian Female example, Obsidian/Black/Leaf

I'm sure the great artists of FR would make it look even cooler, but there's enough for a basic idea of what it could look like anyway XD

(reposted from non-stickied thread, scrapped Opalescent in favor of Tigerseye, and added mock-ups)

All of the above suggestions sound lovely. I'd also like to see tertiary genes that complete the existing primary/secondary sets. Of course, these wouldn't have to be used only with their corresponding Primary & Secondary "matches"... I'd love to see Iridescent/Shimmer dragons with Zebra & Mandarin Tertiaries. :)

Tiger & Stripes: Zebra, stripes of the tertiary color would overlay the centers of the primary & secondary stripes, highlighting them.

Clown & Eyespot: Mandarin, similar to Zebra, this would overlay & highlight the primary & secondary patterns.

Iridescent & Shimmer: Opalescent Tigerseye,(original idea from @DragonSage ) bands of iridescent color would overlay & enhance the overall iridescent appearance.

Might rework Tigerseye a bit. Later.

*edit* Oh wow, I completely forgot about the other set... Probably because I don't like them much at all

I think a Lace tertiary would be really pretty. :)

@Wystaria had the gorgeous idea of a Barn Owl tertiary since they have such simple, gorgeous markings I think they would look amazing on any breed! Just a mock up to visualize a possible take on it ^^; With genes (used a gorgeous Tundra belonging to @Arbor ... he is beautiful!) I lovelovelove the Zebra and Mandarin mockups, @Shavahiivallah !

I would love to see a 'points' tertiary, thinking along the lines of Siamese cats that have darks points on their extremities.

Thanks @CaptainEngstrom :)

Added quite a few images to my original post and added a Tertiary to complete the Speckle/Freckle set.

There are some fantastic suggestions in this thread. I would particularly like to note my support for Peregrine, Zebra, and Piebald!
