TOPIC | Allow accents and special characters
1 2

hi there everyone <3

so as the title states, I think it would be a neat idea if we were allowed to use accents and special characters in names.
this was a big thing for me personally as I am of Nordic descent and the Icelandic language uses a lot of accents on letters and special characters - and I express a lot of my culture in my lair, especially with the names. But since we aren't allowed this, I have to "americanize" the names. And I have met many people who also find frustration in this, alongside not being able to have spaces in the name - so I thought I would suggest it!

I personally can't think of a reason why we wouldn't be allowed this option, maybe of the possibility of people over-Zalgo'ing the names?

I suppose it would be more of a Quality of Life thing - as it doesn't jeopardize anything without it.
Nonetheless, it would be a good idea in my opinion!

As someone who also speaks German or just likes using foreign words as names sometimes, I'd really like to use accented letters or umlauts. TvT

in case you were wondering, the reason it's not allowed is that it would allow for easy bypass of the profanity filters. many people would use the feature to name their dragons slurs, with one letter given an accent in order to trick the filters into not recognizing it.

personally i'd like special characters as well, but there's a reason it's not in the game and probably won't be added in the future.

Seconding what Cactus said, since I see it in nintendo games that have online play a lot.

If time was taken to register each letter as the letter it could be used as though (Like all the accented e's count as an e.)... Or something, that could be fixed

I'd also like to use accents in my names so if it's possible I'd definitely like to see it.

As others have said, cautious support as long as it's done right, because profanity filters. Also big support for having spaces, and perhaps an extended max characters for dragons.

Plus, new words can just be added to the profanity filter. So a simple solution is to just add "accented/special letter" versions of the slurs to the filter list.

Please lol. I wanna give my dragons Polish and French names with the proper accents.

As for moderation- yeah I agree that you can use these to dodge the filter, but as it stands you can dodge the filter in other ways by mashing offensive words together, using different/extra letters or certain letters as spacers. The best way to handle offensive names is by reporting them, so if someone used an accented letter to write a swear word then report it and it will get handled.

The other problem I see with this is (other than the profanity filters), why stop at accents and relative special characters? Why not Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian characters? Why not add all languages?

This to me is more of a 'nothing or all' situation. There's no single language that is 'better' than others, so if you include some then you should include all, at least all major ones. If this can't be done correctly, then better not include others and just stick to plain old English.

PS:
Though I do support adding spaces, - and ' to names, as long as the name doesn't start or end with these characters.

Like Hat17 I feel this would be an 'all or nothing' type deal, because there are many people who would want to use the special characters of their own languages.

However, the reason why special characters might not be used in the names etc.. probably has very little to do with moderation, but more coding limitations.

Three (two are related) examples:

Hati and Skoll. On site, the tooltips used to contain broken characters, because the font/coding couldn't handle the accents in those words.

I have also seen this, mainly for older forum threads offsite, where those characters are converted to ascii or something else, making it hard to read those threads. In threads, it can be annoying, but in the name of a dragon or UN, it can be more than annoying, it could actually break things.

The second example involves 'smart quotes'. Another site I have has a chat instead of a forum, and occasionally you will see someone post 'Null'. Nothing else, just null, sometimes multiple times in a row. This stems from the chat coding not recognizing, or being able to parse the 'smart quotes' as actual quotes or apostraphes, so it just tosses out a null. Another site has that issue with their forums, but instead of a null, it just removes the quotes/apostraphes.

I could see something like this happening on the site.

(also, have to say no support for UNs being able to have the special characters, unless we get pinging by ID number before. Otherwise, I could see tons of mispings as people use the wrong character, or their copy/paste strips out the special character etc..

Alternatively, as said above, though I don't know enough about the characters to know if this would actually be desireable: code the special characters so they act exactly as the non-special character. IE, if someone pings Hati, no special character, it is the same as if they did have the special character in the name. If they are considered two separate characters, then I could see a lot of confusion as you could then potentially have two 'Hati's, one with the special character and one without as UNs, and people wanting to ping the special character one, but don't know how to create said special character, as I don't, would be pinging the regular character Hati all the time)

thing is, accented letters are still part of the latin alphabet, they are not "another language"! If it's doable, I would love to see accents.
