TOPIC | Option to hide triggering imagery
1 2 3 4
Basically toggles to hide images that might trigger some people's phobias.

Items or familiars with these images would probably have a special image to indicate that a triggering image has been hidden, but hovering over it would still display the tooltip to tell you what it is.

Apparel, skins, and accents would be hidden on dragons, but can still be seen (with the special image) in the dragons personal style thingy.

Some examples of things that would be good to have toggles for:

-Spiders
-Centipedes
-Eye horror (Multi-gaze, shadow primal, and plague primal would turn into the common eye type on the dragon but is still shown in the physical attributes thing)
-Glitchy effects (Mostly for skins)

(Note: It'd probably be best to have these toggles separate from eachother. For example, I hate spiders, so I don't want to see that, but I still like eye horror, so I still want to see that.)

Edit: One or two people have suggested that players be able to hide certain items/genes/skins/etc. individually so that this filtering system would be fully customizable and could cater to people with common or very rare phobias, and I really like that idea! Any support for that instead?

No support.

Unfortunately, there's just too many phobias, too many things that could potentially freak people out. This is shown really well in some FR discords, where every other image is censored - even ones that don't actually have any sort of triggering imagery.

Then comes in the issue of user-made images. I'm talking signatures, bios, images posted on threads. The site can't build in toggles for those.
Yes, something like Discords 'spoiler' feature could be useful, but I don't see it being something that could currently be implemented.
When it comes to skins & accents, these would have to be manually given toggles. What if a skin mod misses something? or if something is wrongly marked?

If trigger toggles are introduced (lets say just the ones you mentioned) then there would be people upset that there isn't more. People will butt heads, people may be upset at staff. Worst case scenario, more and more toggles are added, and it comes to the point where there is toggles for things that definitely don't need it.
(an extreme -and somewhat silly- example is people wanting: dragons with fur censored)

I'm very arachnophobic, and yes, I agree that it would be great if people were able to just click a button and the things that make them uncomfortable go away. But on a site like this, those things are unavoidable. And I can't see a way this could be implemented without people getting angry at other users and staff.

Semi-support in theory, but I'm afraid it might be very difficult to implement. As I see it, such a feature would need an extensive tagging system: every image and/or item on site would have to be tagged on if it contains snakes, spiders, insects, scars, body horror, and so on. That would significantly slow down already slow skin approval queues, and probably would be incredibly tedious to implement, as the staff would have to go through all existing assets on site. Sure, you can leave up tagging items to users, but it would lead to a really unreliable system. Say we have a skin with a dragon segmented like an insect, sorta like Wasp gene. On top of that, it has a couple of spider legs on the sides of the dragon. Should that be tagged as arachnophobia? I feel like different users will have a different answer for that.

Anyway, If there's some sort of optimal way to implement this, the system will be largely beneficial. However, right now it seems like a massive project to me, and it will only be moderately better than user-side ways of moderating the content you see.

E.g. if you're afraid of spiders, you can get AdBlock and block out all images of spiders on site. It would be tedious and manual, but it's the best way to perfectly tailor your online experience to your triggers.

Semi support, as Hydde said. A lot of triggers/phobias exist and not adding one can potentially cause some uproar.

I’d really only like it for eye types, setting all eye types to common if a button was switched with the dragon still retaining its primal look on every other players’ screens, and not to mention skins.

I sure don’t want to be the guy who has to label and tag 45k+ individual skins, and I’m sure the skin mods don’t either with the work they already have on their plates

There are tons of unique people on this site, each with their own fears and preferences. As the users mentioned above, that means that there is a wide variety of different concepts or images that might trigger someone. You can't just make a toggle for EVERYTHING that might be triggering, for example, a spider or a pitch-black demon dragon, or a scary looking plant or rodent. Some people get disturbed by bright colors, too. It's a part of the style of the game, and rather than having the staff make a toggle for everything, we are strong and capable of simply scrolling past and making efforts ourselves to not look at something that disturbs us

I'm having a little hard time wording what I want to say so please bear with me [emoji=aberration sad size=2] I can't support an idea like this IF it would be only up for the staff to choose which imagery is "bad enough" to be given a hide option. It would make people with less common phobias upset, and just because their phobia isn't as common as let's say arachnophobia - it doesn't mean they don't deserve to have an option to hide what triggers them. So if staff were to implement a system like this, it should be possible to hide ANY gene or eye type of any element, or any other site item. This would be fair to everyone and it would allow people to fully customize their experience. And this toggle/hide option could be tied to their game database entry for easy access. I can't say how feasible something like this would be, but I think allowing to hide anything is just a far better option than just choosing the most common phobias/triggering genes/eyetypes. We are all individuals and we all deserve the same treatment, no matter how common our phobia is.

Just gonna add here that even people with common phobias/squicks/what have you are not necessarily going to fit into a general category. The only eye type that makes me physically uncomfortable looking at it for too long is Shadow Primal… but Multi-Gaze is genuinely one of my favorite eye types, I like Plague Primal, etc.

So creating a generalized system to just… hide eye types that other people think are similar in some way wouldn't help someone like me: I'd have to choose between either not seeing the thing that makes me physically uncomfortable or not seeing my favorite things on the site.

Phobias and the like are so intensely personal that I'm not really sure any system that involves someone else going over it and saying "this specific thing is valid enough as a phobia to get a filter, and THIS is what's going to be included in it" is ever going to sit comfortably for me.
I would support something like this, but also agree that the staff shouldn't be the one to decide what gets 'blocked'. This would be a lot of work, but I do feel it would be worth it, because it would lay the ground work for other mechanics that players sometimes ask for as well. This would mean that all images, including skins, are tagged. Yes a LOT of work. BUT, having these images be tagged means that, especially for skins, those tags can then be worked into the AH so people who want to buy a skin that has mushrooms can look for skins tagged 'mushroom'. Any skin that has that tag will come up in the AH. Then, having all the images tagged, means that the staff can then create the ability to 'block' tags, and have default images show up. (like say you block Jupiter, any image tagged with 'Jupiter', as in the gene, will show up as a generic swiftwing image, or something like that.) Will this work with the forums? No, not unless the user uses official FR widgets to post in the forums. BUT, the forums are also a relatively 'small' portion of the userbase, so just because it wouldn't be useful in the forums doesn't mean it wouldnt' see a lot of use, and wouldnt help a lot of people. For the forums specifically, I have long wanted to be able to just block signatures. I don't need to see them. I ignore them the majority of the time. Also, I want spoiler that collapses the image/text beneath a little spoiler tag. Click to view the hidden stuff. This would make it a LOT easier to not only hide images that might contain a phobia, but also help make things easier to organize posts, because you wouldn't have posts, like miine, that go on for miles. I also feel that this might help with other aspects as well, such as potentially allowing more leniancy on various rules, because people who don't like that particular imagery, can simply 'block' the tag and not see it. I also feel that the staff should be in charge of the tags. I have been on sites where users make the tags, and boy is it frustrating to want to block a tag, but have 30 different iterations of that tag, including with very specific to one single work phrasing, making it nearly impossible to actually block that particular imagery completely. We don't need 'mushrooms' 'toadstools' '200 different varieties of mushrooms' 'another 100 ways people have come up with to say mushrooms or toadstool' as tags.

Why not a show/hide toggle for individual items? Users can switch the toggle on or off via item database, to reduce workload for staff and accommodate any specific phobia/whitelist instances of the phobia that happen to not be triggering (eg a cartoon spider)

Always in support of an eye types toggle, many people have asked for this since eye types got added, and the list of eye types is much more finite than, say, user made skins. Please with the option to select for element so someone who is bothered by Primal Shadow doesn’t also have to toggle off Primal Wind.

Basically everything that CloudedViews said I agree with.

I think the best / easiest alternative to this suggestion would be something like discords image spoilers. it’s 100% on the owner of the image (dragon) to add a ‘spoiler’ to it. probably just a buffer page similar to the one that appears when clicking on urls that take you outside of flight rising, with a small description; spoilered for: (user input of max like 150 characters)
