This is an interesting idea! I do think it would be best split up though, into some form of site poll for most popular dragons and a calendar with original art.
I would not be very interested in merchandise with the default dragon art, but a dragon popularity poll with original staff art of a player's dragon could be enough of an incentive to cause people to try to buy votes or otherwise cheat the system. A calendar with original art similar to what is on existing merch would be really fun though.
