TOPIC | A New Way to Gain a Gene
1 2
Yesterday I was brousing the shops and I realised that the only way to get any gene is through buying in the Marketplace or trading with Swipp(I think). I reccon it would be cool if there was an item(perhaps like a special needle item) you could by that can be used to remove and store a dragon’s gene and then be able to use/transfer it onto another dragon. Thanks for listening:D

@MinaiTeratzi You can get genes from; Treasure Marketplace, Gem Marketplace, Baldwin's Bubbling Brew, Swipp's Swap Stand, Arlo's Ancient Artifacts, and the Coliseum.

For the suggestion itself, absolutely no support unless the item cost as much as the most expensive gem gene. Otherwise you could take any ugly gem-gened fodder dragon, strip it of its shiny gem genes for cheap, and then put them on whatever dragon you wanted. It would tank the market and lose so much revenue for the site in terms of gem sales.

You can also get genes from the Coliseum, Arlo, and Baldwin.

This would end in a severe revenue loss for FlightRising if able to be used on gem genes. Even as a treasure gene-only item that is from... the Coliseum? Marketplace? Either way, we need treasure sinks. If an item like this we're to be added, it would need to be done so extremely carefully that I hesitate to see it as worthwhile:

Either it would have to be so pricey that it is almost pointless (if not entirely), or it would need to be so extremely rare that it rivals Eliminates in the Coliseum.

Overall, I don't see the item as particularly worthwhile. If your concern is having more places to get genes, we have plenty as-is. I don't think this item is really necessary if that's the sole reason.

You buy two dragons with three gem genes each for fodder price.

You breed them and get three babies. You use the item on the three kids. You get the gene scrolls back, meaning that you most likely got a massive profit from this.

This reminds me of, I wanna say zombie infection for player avatars on Subeta? Or at least vampire infection for dragons on DragCave, where you can turn a normal egg into a vampire egg by biting it with a vampire dragon. In both cases you usually need help from another player to bestow you with the thing, since I think zombieism was passed avatar to avatar, and vampire eggs terrify the clans they originate in and are automatically abandoned. (I’m probably super misremembering the Subeta thing but it was something where customization got passed to you from another player)

So, as others have said, the gene-donating feature unmodified wouldn’t be sustainable, but perhaps there could still be a particular gene that’s acquired a particular way, like through dragon bites or something (I’m reminded how one of the cobra food items is said to “infect” a dragon with gembond, even though in actual gameplay it doesn’t work that way)

Personally I think it could be fun to get some kind of customization by being “tapped” by another player or what have you, though I know there’s the two sided issue of needing to wait for someone to cooperate with you, or not wanting to participate in social interaction at all but still wanting the thing (something we saw with the launch of Arlo). I definitely wouldn’t make this an involuntary change ie “your dragon got tagged, its original tertiary is GONE,” maybe instead “does your dragon accept this love note (and these heart eyes)?” or just full on make it toggleable once the option has been given.

Maybe a bit complicated and not the usual direction of the site, but I had fun thinking about it ;)

If writers are supposed to "show not tell," why are we called "storytellers" and not "storyshow-ers"?
I wonder if something like this would work if they introduced a specific type of gene that didn't have a gene scroll: so, maybe exclusive genes available through a new NPC that applies them directly to your dragons.

Though I guess I am likely trailing off of the original suggestion if you wanted such a thing specifically for existing genes, haha. However: there are also other ways to get genes! Some drop from the coliseum and there are some brewable from Baldwin (those are usually high level though) aaaand there are some cheaper ones up on the auction house (like smirch). Then of course genes have a chance of being passed down, so you could always buy or adopt a pre gened dragon and breed it with one of your own to start a breeding project. :D

[/quote] We can take it a step further, the item and new gene are roundsey raffle exclusive. Surely this won't cause any chaos! Jokes aside, yeah, the idea is neat, but a nightmare if given more than a second of thought.

Yeah you all make good points, but lets say it’s A) a very costly 1 time use item, or 2) You have to buy a bundle and have the chance of getting it, that would gain a fairly equal revenue. (It’s cool to hear what people have to say though and their opinions!)

A vey costly one-time use item? Like… a normal gene scroll?
