Lore

Solaris was taught at a young age how to make money. Money was important to survive, that everyone knew. But it was doubly important for her to learn how to. Her parents were entertainers and were apart of a nomadic clan. The small clan had not only her parents, but her brothers and sisters and other families. All had powers in entertaining others with their magic. This lifestyle and line of work was passed on to her, naturally. Because of this, Solaris had to learn how to dance and most of all learn how to control elements. She was born an ice dragon, making it hard to grasp how to control fire. Her parents were experts and this discouraged her a bit.

This never made her give up hope, though. She knew with time that she would be better, probably even better than her parents, but she didn’t like to wait. Her parents knew this all too well. Being nomads, their way was to move to another clan possibly in another flight every 6 months. During that 6 months they would work hard for the first 5 and relax the last month with a good portion of their saved up money. It worked out beautifully, but Solaris was always ready to move. In fact, she would beg and plead with her parents to move to another clan only after a week. Staying in one place, even as short as 6 months, bored her.

Solaris had figured out each clan a week after getting there. Where to get food, where to go for the most amount of money, what the best shops were, etc. After figuring that out, it all became boring. Her parents had a tough time trying to teach her that staying for 6 months was a good thing. It not only made financial sense, but it also made sense for the well being of their family. They were nomads but moving from place to place every week or so like their daughter had wanted would leave them all tired and beaten down. That wasn’t anyway to live. Her impatience persisted, though. Waiting would never be her strong suit.

With each clan they travelled to and with each passing month, she got better at entertaining the crowd. The flames would dance high above her head as she danced around it. The fire twisted and turned, and she would too. Her clothing, made of silk, and her magnificent wings all made the sight of her dancing one of spectacular fun. Normally Solaris was a calm girl, never making too much of a fuss, but with her fire, she felt alive. She looked it too. There was still strong competition between her and her siblings, though. They always seemed to be better than her, even with her many improvements.

When Solaris became a young adult, her parents sat her down. Their small nomadic clan praised and preferred the strong magic users. Solaris was not strong in her magic and her impatience over it didn’t help either. Her magic could also be unpredictable, they knew she was trying, but it wasn't enough. They broke the news to her that she had to leave and leave immediately. Solaris sat there in silence for a long time. Both of her parents shared a glance at each other before asking if she was okay. Solaris stood up and brushed past them. She knew if she opened her mouth it’d only be full of hateful words. She had seen this happen before in the clan, but she never thought her own parents would do this to her. Solaris quickly gathered her things, mostly ignoring her parents and saying her goodbyes to her siblings. She knew that logically they weren’t to blame for this, but it still hurt that they got to stay and she didn’t.

It was finally time to say goodbye to her parents. Her caretakers. Her teachers. Solaris felt mostly anger when she walked up to them with her things on her back. They had clearly upset looks on their faces. This seemed to chill her anger, only for tears to well up in her eyes. Solaris, despite any grudge she was forming, wrapped her arms around her parents and let herself cry. Many others from the clan had gathered around, looking a mixture of sad and angry. After a couple seconds she let them go and said a warbly goodbye. Solaris then, slowly, took her first steps out of her clan and into the world.

After this, Solaris took towards the Arcane flight home. It didn’t take her long to get there. She had been coming from the Windswept Plateau which was right next to the Starfall Isles. As Solaris took her first few step, the ground seemed to buzz with not only Arcane magic, but all magic. It made her almost shoot off some fire before she could control herself. It really was a powerful buzz that all dragons felt when not used to the magic in the Starfall Isles.

Solaris began doing what she did best. This time a little different, though. She still did her fire dancing, which got her lots of money. But this time she left a week after being there like she had always wanted to. Staying too long anywhere made her antsy and bored, but she realized with each passing clan that she felt more lonely. Every time she saw young hatchlings hide behind their mothers and fathers when watching her dance, she felt a twinge in her heart. Solaris missed her parents, she missed her clan mates, she missed her siblings. It left her heart open and heavy.

Along the way, she had met a cute creature she named Chefluer in a clan she visited. It had fire powers itself and saw her struggling with it right before she went to go perform. It crawled on her and rubbed its head against hers in a way of affection. It wasn’t very strong, but it would do its best to protect her whenever she was in danger. She was now entering the deepest part of the forest that opened up to the waterways. Chefluer was on her shoulder, napping. Suddenly, yelling sounded from behind her, scaring her and Chefluer. Most of the time she ignored things like this. The woods were either empty or occupied by many dragons, especially near the waterways, and it wasn’t any of her business if dragons were yelling and screaming in a forest. Soon, though, she heard the yelling getting louder and closer. Her heart beat a little faster despite any rationalizations she could think of for the yelling to get closer.

It was then she was ambushed. She hit the ground hard along with Chefluer and her bag full of her things. Three dragons stood above her. They had hurled into her, almost making her fall into the water. They explained that they saw her performance and wanted her to themselves. This scared her, almost made her freeze completely, but she let out a long screech. Chefluer was snarling at them, but they kicked it away. This frightened Solaris even more, she didn’t want her familiar hurt! Her fear was making her magic fail. On top of that, she didn’t even know how to use her magic defensively or offensively, only to entertain. When they had laughed at her screech and went to grab her, a sword flung through the air, whizzing past one of the three dragons’ heads. It had a clear meaning: a warning. Two dragons had appeared. They seemed to scare the three dragons. The three dragons immediately ran, leaving Solaris on the ground, shaken but for the most part unharmed.

One of the dragons, the one that looked younger, helped Solaris up and grabbed her bag for her along with Chefluer. The older of the two dragons explained to her that they wanted to help her. The woods by the waterways were always rough, and they could offer her protection. They also knew of her talents in entertainment magic, even if it wasn’t as controlled as others they’ve seen. Solaris noticed as they continued talking that they were dressed in what could be assumed as pirate gear. It made her a bit wary, but she continued listening.

The two offered a permanent place on their ship. She would only be responsible for cleaning up after her small room on the ship and cleaning her food plates. She could also get training for her magic. To her, it all sounded too good to be true. If pirates were really this nice, why were people so afraid? Why were her attackers so afraid of these two? But she made her decision. She decided to join them for now, even if it wasn’t the best idea. Solaris was leaving a clan anyway, if she decided not to join she could always jump off and find a nearby clan.

As time lingered on on the ship, she figured out that the clan was called Cieux Noirs and those apart of it called themselves “Noires”. There were all sorts of different Noires on the ship, each more interesting than the last. They were very welcoming pirates, that was for sure. They treated her as one of their own almost as soon as she got there. The word family was tossed around a lot, which made her feel actually at home. Each day passing, each new clan they visited together, she felt at home. It was so relieving and even more so when she knew that she wouldn’t be kicked out just for her ability in magic. In fact, she didn’t think she’d ever get kicked out. She had her new family now.
