on a geologic timescale, plants are our brothers and sisters. this isn't spiritual but instead biological: besides a few minor differences, the cells of flora and fauna follow the same ancient blueprint. we share a quarter of our genes; maybe they are used a bit differently between species, but the language is the same, parsed out in a wild song of nucleotides in every living being.

this is not to overstate the elegance of DNA; to those who know it intimately, it is something of a mess. every sequence that works well enough is kept, leading to a complicated chromosomal jumble - transposons, repeat-rich inanity, bits of coding sequence tucked here and there among nonsense.

for arabidopsis, the confusion is what makes it so fascinating to study. it's what makes her plants so wonderfully alive, with their shifting genes and mutations and eventually, through sheer dumb luck, adaptation. she's worked in the greenhouses for years, but she never fails to get an excited flutter in her chest whenever her newest batch of seeds sprout, reaching their delicate tendrils up towards the sun. what will have changed this time around?

AND I FIND IT A GREAT PLEASURE TO KNOW THEM."
