In the small hollow in the ice Frostbite peered into, two small dragons whispered to each other over the glow of a lantern. The flame was a soft yellow, and though its light was faint, Frostbite struggled to look directly at it, and chose to close her eyes. The two dragons were a Coatl and Skydancer, both skinny and exhausted-looking, passing a strip of dried horse-flesh between them.

Unwilling to wait any longer, Frostbite pounced. The following events transpired quickly. The light was snuffed out first, and Frostbite's darkness-adjusted eyes recovered first in the inky black. She closed the top with a snap and turned her attention to her right, where the Coatl was screaming and pressed against the wall. The Skydancer was quicker to recover, and lunged at Frostbite, sinking his teeth into whatever skin he could find.

Frostbite flung him to the ground, easily dislodging the weak dragon, taking his skull between her hands and crashing it into the ice below. Skydancers are notoriously delicate. He was dead within a few blows, and spit gurgled in his throat as his eyes rolled back, blank.

The Coatl was still screaming, frozen in fear. She now saw Frostbite, and wailed as she advanced, tiny arms scrabbling at the walls as if to dig her way out. No, no, no, she begged, eyes wide, no, I'll leave, I won't tell anybody, please, oh, please--! Frostbite shot forward, and struck just beneath her jaw, grasping the Coatl's neck in her teeth as blood bubbled out, thick and sticky, flooding Frostbite's mouth and running in rivulets down her neck. The dying whimpers of the Coatl faded into the abyss of the tunnels.
