Biography

Astera, Enchantress
Patron god: Mertisal, god of Water and Freedom
Eyes: silver|Gender: Point

Lore Story: Through the Depths
Age: ~650
Mate: Surelight
Role: Guard, Enchanter, Delver
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Something was about to go wrong, Astera could tell.

It was almost imperceptible, but there was a quality to the air--a certain pressure and energy--not unlike the moment just before a lightning strike. The forest around her stilled, a ripple of silence racing through the trees. Every instinct screamed at her to bolt.

“Cypress, Terracotta?” she whispered, low and urgent, to her two companions happily foraging at the edge of the clearing. “Get behind me. Now.”

Immediately, Terracotta darted away from the trees and hovered at Astera’s side. The nocturne gripped his cane tightly and gave a nervous chitter. Cypress hastily threw the mushrooms he had been picking into his pack and bounded over, and the mirror looked faintly ridiculous ducking behind a pearlcatcher a full third smaller than himself.

Astera reared onto her hind legs, wings spread, and hefted her halberd. Her ears swiveled forwards, picking up on the most minute of sounds--no, the opposite. She was hearing the silence moving through the woods, like a wave, as fast as thunder.

From the depths of the forest shone furious gold eyes.

The massive woodland elephant stormed into the clearing. It raised its head in challenge, wicked tusks gleaming, and charged.

“Up!” bellowed Astera. “Up!”

The three dragons took off, spiralling away from the enraged beast. Below in the clearing, the elephant skidded to a halt and reared in fury, attacking trees and bushes and anything else in its path.

Astera didn’t want to kill the animal, but letting something so large and powerful run berserk wasn’t an option either. “Cypress, go back to the Waypoint. Terracotta, I might need your help, so stay aloft as long as you can.”

“You mean to fight it?” Terracotta sounded concerned.

“Not fight it, just knock it out. I have this feeling…” Astera knew elephants, and they were peaceful and tolerant creatures. She adjusted her grip on her halberd, and dove.

The elephant saw her coming and reared, raking the air with its tusks. Astera tightly spiralled to one side, just missing being gored, and slammed into the beast’s shoulder. The elephant toppled, thrashing its head to try and retaliate. Astera leapt away.

She crouched low to the ground, singing softly. She could feel her magic stirring to the song, and she reached out to collect the water in the air. She shouldn’t need much…

The elephant had clambered to its feet and lowered its head. The entire time, it still had not made a single sound, and even its footsteps were muted. The only noise was Astera’s quiet song, and the elephant charged.

She sang on, silvery water collecting before her.

It raced closer.

Silver water, silver singing.

It was on her.

With all her strength she launched herself upwards and whipped the water down like a lash, striking the beast on the temple. It crumpled in a heap.

“Astera!” Terracotta spiralled down to meet her in the air. “Astera, your side is bleeding and I need to--”

“I don’t feel it, I’ll be fine.” That was a lie; it did hurt, but it was nothing Astera wasn’t used to. “You need to heal the elephant; extreme pain is the only reason it would go berserk like that.”

“No promises, Astera, but I’ll see what I can do. We did take an oath, after all.”

“Aye, that we did.”

"I, Astera the Enchantress, vow to do all in my power to heal the wounded, defend the weak, and shelter the outcast. My loyalty is sacrifice, and my sacrifice is loyalty; all my loyalty to the Waypoint and those we serve. On my life, voice, and wings I do swear."
