Biography

Talon
"He says you're lucky to be alive right now, imbecile."

"The poor dear. She looks so young, her and her companion."
"Serious? She looks like a wild thing about to bite."
"Not when the two of them are together.
She looks like a normal woman, then."
She was exhausted by the time the spiral approached her; the passage of time seemed to warp in the belly of a ship, with only the rocking of the walls to mark time, and it seemed so long since she had slept well. Even sleeping in shifts only went so far.
"Ah, there you are. Talon, they call you?"
Her curved glinting wing curled around him, but the spiral's large eyes caught sight of him just the same. "I've heard it said you're something of a linguist, and your companion as well. My name is Hyla-"
"Who told you about us."
The spiral bobbed her head, still peering around at the smaller figure, who gazed back steadfastly. Both of their expressions were blank, in a practiced way. "Ah, your captain, was it? It was the same who told me they'd no need of your talents anymore. They were largely wasted there, anyway, hmm? Your services were included in the contract, although not his, nor for that matter his name. .."
Reading the surprise on their faces, she continued - "I see. You weren't informed. I'm sorry, but there's no place for you where you came from. However, I'd like to offer you a job, in return for food, lodging, and security. We won't ask you to fight, only to speak. We need translators, negotiators."
Talon shook her head. She was so very tired. Pogo-Nip brushed her wing lightly out of the way, squeezing her claw. "Yes."
The two of them conversed in a third tongue for a brief exchange, heated at first but with the fire in their voices extinguishing quickly. Hyla was quietly marveling at how easily they came to an accord together. The red dragon met her eyes, for the first time looking at her with interest rather than disdain and mistrust. "We want to hear your terms."

History
"She was born in a Lightning clan and grew up surrounded by technology, but to her family's surprise she was never interested in the engineering pursuits favored by her clanmates. Instead, she liked to study monsters. She would sneak away from the clan's roost in the early hours of the morning, flying to high perches where she could discretely observe the Beastclans and wildlife of the desert."
Nameless, like most young hatchlings, she spent much time trying to find a suitable title for herself, rejecting the suggestions her parents and clanmates had made.
"Her natural gift for mimicry made it easy for her to learn the language of the Harpies, whose harsh but musical phrases permeated the desert around her birthplace. She quickly developed friendships with several young harpies and learned much about their culture, particularly their ancient arts. She also learned many of their hunting techniques, and became an adept scout. When her harpy friends came of age, she snuck away from home to travel with them for a time. On her travels she encountered other Beastclans - the cunning Serthis and the proud Maren - and while their languages were not so easy to learn, she vowed that she would master them in time."
She had found a name for herself during her travels, to honor the great Talona herself without donning that exact name. Instead, she called herself Talon, a declaration of friendship and a symbol of her allegiance to the beastclans.
"Once they learned of her secret travels, Talon's clanmates were not so accepting. They demanded that she stop her travels and focus her attention on engineering, and forbade her from seeing her Harpy friends again. Heartbroken, she went to her mother seeking advice - and was shocked when her mother suggested that she should leave her birth clan behind and pursue her dreams of travel. With her parents' blessing, Talon left her home and sought out a new clan - one where she could develop her gift with languages while visiting faraway places."
Even as far as the Southern Icefield, Talon found very few clans that even tolerated beastclans. Her personal intentions of learning to communicate meant she couldn't stay around for very long, using the clans only as shelter before she left.
When she managed to placate a longneck clan with an assortment of food from a clan's hoard, Talon didn't tell the clan and vowed to replace it. They found out before she had a chance and she was driven away from the clan.
Much of what she did then on involved cheating the clans she stayed with in order for her to learn the language of the local beastclans. As such, she also became more adept at lying and sneaking around so she could stay with clans for a longer period of time. Talon had started to believe that there were no clans that allied with beastclans and she, instead, sought refuge only to try and further her own interests.
This worked for a while and the nocturne had met many beastclans in her travels. She even managed to befriend a young longneck wanderer by the name of Pogo-nip. When Talon prepared to leave the frigid tundra again, Pogo-nip joined her. While it was common to choose a familiar that would aid a dragon and accompany them in their journeys, Talon didn't regard Pogo-nip as such and refused to consider him as anything other than a friend when they sought refuge in clans.
It wasn't uncommon that they were turned away frequently. When Talon approached a ragtag group of dragons on the shores of the Sunbeam Ruins, she was surprised to discover that they were pirates. At her request of a temporary place to stay, they laughed and offered to steal her belongings instead. One tundra approached her before she had a chance to disappear and offered her a place if she aided in an attack against a local clan. Talon kindly rejected the proposition, only slightly horrified at the idea of attacking fellow dragons for greed.
Slowly, over time, her opinion of the matter started to change when she and Pogo-nip were harassed and even robbed by some clans. It was rare that they were offered a place of warmth by Talon's kind and nearly just as rare among the beastclans.
Their explorations had taken its toll on the pair. Despite the warmth the pair felt towards each other, they were just as unfriendly towards outsiders as the clans were to them and after surviving an ambush by rogues, Talon had made up her mind.
When the
Crowned Thresher docked at the auction house, the pair were waiting. Getting hired was easy but the work that followed saw both of them trying to find their place. Pogo-nip's smaller size meant his work was twice as limited as Talon's and more than a few of the crew were constantly threatening to maim him or worse.
Even on the ship, allies were hard to come by though they found one in Harpy. Despite her constantly bitter attitude, the fellow nocturne found an easy foothold in conversations when she saw Pogo-nip. They got along relatively well, often speaking in the many tongues of the beastclans.
Slowly, the pair were becoming more comfortable sailing. Since they weren't the first aboard the ship that had been allied with the beastclans, they suffered less. Like Harpy, though, the only dragon to truly despise them was Svarog.
Talon learned the art of diversion in order to survive in the ring and during pillages. It was a talent and a tactic that most dragons had difficulty mastering and with the gift of mimicry she would cause her opponent to look away before she delivered quick, painful blows to the weakest parts of their body.
This distraction managed to save more than a few of her fellow sailors, but Wolfram took it to heart when she distracted a pearlcatcher just as he shot a bolt of fire. Rather than hit the mirror, it caught one of the pearlcatcher's allies and the pirate was able to attack the pearlcatcher.
Since then, Wolfram kept an eye on the nocturne intent on returning the favor, though they've both found interests to talk about and get along well.
While less than deadly when pillaging, Talon and Pogo-nip have proven useful in exploration on islands. Pogo-nip was a remarkable tracker and Talon could mimic the sounds they heard to either draw out what had produced it or let the crew hear what they'd heard.
While she misses being able to enjoy the company of beastclans, Talon has settled into the life of a pirate comfortably. Unable to forgive clans for scorning her allegiances and casting her out, Talon has proven merciless.
Of the crew, only Svarog is unable to cope with Talon's interests and she is unable to leave Pogo-nip alone with him. Though he isn't the only one who dislikes their friendship aboard, he's taken his dissatisfaction to a physical level.

Pogo-nip
10760.png
Pogo-nip can be described as taller than the average longneck, and work on the ship has made him more defined. Unlike the dragons of the crew, he keeps his white fur relatively clean. A former battle with rogue dragons have left his left arm with a mess of scars.
Since he started working on the ship, the longneck has cast aside his cloak and most of his satchels. He keeps a double-ended spear tipped with poison and vials of toxins in the only satchel he carries.
Hailing from the Cloudscrape Crags, Pogo-nip hadn't seen much when he lived with his clan. Even as a pup, he was constantly on the move preferring to explore rather than meditate. As Pogo-nip grew so did his restlessness. At his adulthood ceremony, Pogo-nip was dubbed a wanderer as was befitting for his personality and the longneck couldn't have been more ecstatic.
He was sent to the Bravemane Outpost the day afterwards to begin scouting out places for future clans and outposts.
The Bravemane Outpost was regarded as one of the more dangerous assignments because it was placed close to the tundra, where dragon clans resided. It wasn't uncommon for the longnecks to see a dragon scout or two fly overheard and during these times, they would utilize the foliage around them to hide in plain sight.
It was here Pogo-nip met and befriended stubborn Illian. Her antagonistic ways would see him and other recruits losing their tempers or ruining their meditation. She even managed to cause the white longneck to leave the outpost for a day to meditate under the cover of night and recover his temper.
In order to resolve their differences, Guide Tormo sent them on a week long scouting expedition into the tundra to mark possible outpost locations. It was both dangerous and necessary and forced the pair to stick close together. During a hunt a few days after they'd been sent out Illian had been attacked by a fae dragon and suffered serious burns to her right side. They were forced to return to the outpost with Pogo-nip dragging Illian on a hand-made sled after her burns started to get more serious.
She survived though she would never be the same again. Between the time on the expedition and the days Pogo-nip spent worrying over the female's wounds, their bond strengthened and only continued to grow when Illian was able to return to duty. That bond blossomed into pups and Illian was forced to leave the outpost to birth them in secret, because her rank as an interloper did not permit pups nor did she ask permission from her superiors.
The days that Pogo-nip spent worrying over Illian turned into weeks until a message was delivered to the outpost to tell the longneck that his mate had died during the birth, as did their pups. At fault for costing them a 'valued member of the clan' and going against his rank's standards as well, Pogo-nip was stripped of his rank and sent back to the clan to live out his days as a 'lost one'. While the clan spent a week mourning her death, Pogo-nip holed himself up in his own hut for many weeks.
He only came out when he heard tale of the clan inviting a dragon into their home. While he was forbidden to speak to his clanmates, as was part of the rank of a lost one, he was not forbidden to speak to dragons. He feared them just as much as the next longneck and her arrival had everyone in arms though no one attacked, especially when she offered meat and plants that she'd brought.
Over a course of several days and visits from the nocturne regarded as Talon, the clan became more relaxed and started to socialize with her, including Pogo-nip. When she stayed overnight he would sneak out of his hut to study her and it wasn't uncommon to see the pair talking.
When Talon announced that she had to depart from the clan, Pogo-nip asked if he would join her. While the clan did not speak to him, they did shun him by burning his hut and what belongings he had that weren't on him. It wasn't unheard of for longnecks to be kept as familiars but he was not accepting submission as a familiar but to travel with Talon as a companion.
Despite the clan's response, Talon accepted his request. The odd pair spent much of their time traveling without much assistance from clans of neither dragons nor beasts. Dragon clans regarded their 'companionship' as odd and as a betrayal to dragonkind, and beastclans presumed Pogo-nip was merely a familiar meant to do the bidding of Talon.
The unwelcoming attitude they were greeted with started to change them. Pogo-nip no longer regarded his own kind nor other beastclans with warmth the more they were turned away and Talon's speech was often to the point and clipped. Towards each other, they were kind and friendly but the outside world saw little of that.
When they approached a small group of gritty dragons, Talon and Pogo-nip were invited to join them in their 'raid' if they wanted a place to stay but neither accepted the offer.
When the unwelcome behavior they often received worsened to being attacked, robbed, and often insulted, both Talon and Pogo-nip started to return the favor. The previous love they had held for their own kind and mutual respect they had for each others' was lost in the folds of disgust and hatred.
After a particular ambush that cost them nearly everything but their lives, they agreed to find the former group that offered them a refuge and when the
Crowned Thresher docked at the auction house, they were waiting.
Much of Pogo-nip's lift remains entwined with Talon's. Initially, surviving on the pirate ship meant surviving on board and off the ship. A longneck would've been nothing more than a plaything to the pirates but his size, past, and the looming presence of his nocturne ally would prove useful.
Pogo-nip, while not accepted on the pirate ship, has become regarded as one of the crew though his draconic can become extremely difficult to understand. Oftentimes, Talon or Harpy must translate for him and to him.
