______ An aristocrat. A prince of noble blood. Tafadel was the youngest of a noble pair, too young to ever inherit their fortune or power. Still, he could be useful. Ignored by his parents and siblings, he was raised solely by servants and kindly priests that tutored him in the ways of language, maths, hunting, politics, anything they could. So many summer evenings spent lying in the dusty courtyard, surrounded by scraggy plants, buzzing insects and the sweet scent of natural warmth, holding scrolls and books in his talons. The calming voices of his teachers would nearly lull him to sleep. A childhood to be envied, despite the loneliness, isolation and pressure to be something great; nothing to complain about.

As he grew, he became the elegant and educated dragon expected of him, nothing more, nothing less. Those who were in charge of him, his family, happy with his progress. No need for more lessons. He could be ignored until needed for tasks befitting of a prince.

Until he wasn't.

A rival noble family, envious of their land and riches, scorned and insulted by them, were finished with these petty squabbles. Done with them. Time for action. Declarations of war, hired assassins, spies and thieves. Suddenly, everything Tafadel knew was plunged into a vicious, manipulative war. Well, he didn't know at first, it didn't concern him, but he was eventually told after the first attempt on his life. Unfortunately, he couldn't go and tell the rivals that they'd made a mistake, he was expendable, his family wouldn't care if he was killed, so he was sent away.

Some forgotten village on the other side of the Earthshaker's domain would suffice.

They said it was to 'learn humility, integrate with society'. If he needed to integrate with society, then it was because they isolated him in the first place, he thought. Oh well. This was much preferable to being found dead at the claws of an assassin anyways. Life was rough at first, and he'd met more dragons in one day than he'd been allowed to interact with all his life, but he found himself settling into the chaotic rhythm of communal living.

They never came to collect him. Weeks turned to months, which turned into years. Still he stayed. He figured he'd just been forgotten. Faded from the memory of his blood siblings and progenitors, left as nothing but ink-stain words on yellowed parchment hidden in the house library. But really, in being forgotten by his family, he'd been accepted into a new one- a community less restrictive and cruel than the one he had left. Tafadel didn't mind this turn of events at all. Perhaps now, he could really start a life in which he could live and die as a free dragon instead of a simple tool to be used and eventually discarded. Yes, he decided. He much preferred this. Being the Forgotten Prince was not all that bad.
