Near the icy waters on a frozen beach, there is a strange formation of spires, slopes and tunnels of a cool metal-like material. This is the lair of the Obsidian Ice Wasp dragons.

This sub-species live in the Southern Ice Field on the frozen shores of the Sea of a Thousand Currents.

These dragons tend to be smaller than most dragons, but their aggressive nature easily makes up for their size, which helps them earn their wasp name.

They also earn the title of wasp because of their primary pattern, along with their bee secondary and opal tertiary, however, more recent mutation patterns have made them begin to lose the segmented body and see through wings for a more shiny skin that is more elastic and flexible, giving them more rotation in their limbs and better ability to fly.

On the basis of colouring, they tend to be obsidian coloured both on their bodies and wings, however, their opal patterns display shiny and bright colours, usually used to attract their mates and to show potential predators that they could taste a little toxic.

In some cases, the bright opal colours can even be mistaken as eyes, and when in the dark, these dragons look like nightmares come to life.

Another interesting ability these dragons have is their spit. Their spit is actually created from eating dark plants that were grown exclusively by this sub-species, along with chewing obsidian shards, and when mixed with their extremely sticky spit, it can become a durable, strong building material for the Hives of these dragons.

They create these structures by taking large base rocks and attach them together with the spit, shaping it into a beautiful home for them, with design features make specifically for the dragons that live there.

Obsidian Ice Wasp dragons are extremely territorial. If a dragon approaches the territory, they will be assessed by the guard wasps, where if they pass, which is generally because they as a possible mate or a possibly good worker, they will be given the task of making their room and will be assigned a job in the territory. If fail the assessment, the dragon will be mercilessly chased away or killed.

Obsidian Ice Wasp hatchlings have tiny wings, which can not be used to fly with until they are about three weeks old, so when they become old enough to walk, they are taught to climb the hive where there are specially made claw holds for the children to practice their climbing on. This also trains the small dragon how to escape a dangerous situation in a confined space by climbing out in a quick and safe escape.

The hives have a soft spot for wandering babies. Orphans or young dragons who don't have a home are invited into the hives because its just a shame to let them die in the cold because no one wanted them. They are taught by the brood mothers and later on get jobs and rooms in the hive. This is also how the hives don't end up in-breeding.

Generally, these are the roles the clan has, from most important to least:

The Queen: The queen wasp is in charge of the hive. They will make all the decisions for the hive, making sure the hive is safe. They will spend a lot of time with hatchlings, teaching them about the clan rules and helping the brood mothers with caring for them. The queen also has the ability to speak within the minds of her hive members, which lets the queen keep her hive updated about news and inform them of an attack on the hive or a danger anywhere in the territory.

Brood Mothers: The brood mothers are dragons who specifically do a lot of the caring for the hatchlings, mostly feeding, teaching, playing with and caring for them when the parents are taking a break or getting food and water for the kids. They also assist mother when they are laying eggs and carefully watch over the eggs until the hatch.

Guards: Guards are an important part of the Hive, keeping the entirety of the Territory safe. There is no head guard, but rather they are lead by the queen. They have scheduled patrols of the territory and regularly make time to properly guard the hatchery and the younger dragons to keep them safe. The guards work hand in hand with the brood mothers to keep the hatchlings safe.

Regular workers: These dragons work to gather food, build and repair the hive, create art, sculpt and other such jobs. Generally, they go to markets and sell their sculptures, art, food items and other things for treasure to fund projects within the hive.

Hatchlings and older dragons: These are the most vulnerable dragons, so they are heavily guarded. Hatchlings are the future of the hive, so they are carefully taught to care for themselves and the elder dragons are the past of the clan, so they pass on their knowledge to the rest of the hive, warning them of past dangers and being generally very dependable when you need someone to talk too.
