"Born in blood with sword in hand, you will die by sword, blood spilled." These are the words Kieran grew up with all his life. The people of his land, though is people, were not his kin and thus they were enemies, in a land isolated from the rest of the world both in territory and in their old ways of many generations. Traditions that are cold and brutal as the blade itself that brings death. He knew of nothing else and was content, expecting no more or less. And when the day came that was his time, he had all intention to pass on. However, his enemies did not deliver a final blow; greviously wounded and certainly dying, they figured him for dead and moved on in their battle. As delirium took over from intense pain and loss of blood, he wandered, a will to fight still searching for something to fight against, until he was lost in the wilds still pursuing enemies that were not there until he finally collapsed into unconsciousness. However, what he could not know was that a wisened old woman, a nomad and hermit, had followed his trail of blood to him. At the edge of the chasm of his demise, she was able to pull him back. She saved his life. Unable to move him, she instead would set up tent and camp around him so that he could recover in what comfort she could provide while healing his wounds and flushing out infections that had already begun to take root. In his first, albeit brief, awakening, all he could understand of what she said was she saved him. And all he could utter in response was "how dare you." As he regained his means to stay conscious and he and the world around him became more coherent, he was troubled by what to do. To save someone was not a thing to do in his old ways. To the dying, you either gave them death or let it come to them, but either way, the moment you could no longer fight is the moment you were to be ignored. He would have already been counted as having died in battle, an expectation that he would have fulfilled dutifully. To return would not be to joy but suspicion and ostracization. He had thusly decided that when he was fully healed, he would confront his family with the truth that he was saved by an outsider against his will, and would demand combat with those who slayed him. Both clans involved would bear witness and death would be ensured. In his victory, he would be seen as having fulfilled his expectations and his survival would be forgiven. When he told his savior of this, she asked him the question that would change him forever. "Why throw yourself at the Reaper's feet while so young, when you can grow old in harmony, at peace of the world and her many beauties?" It was a question he did not understand and could not answer. He demanded to know what she meant, but she refused any response, instead to only smile at him. Again and again, he would demand to know what she meant as he recovered, only to be met with more questions. What was born as frustration from ignorance slowly turned into genuine curiosity and then keen interest. She would talk of many things he had not experienced; the wonder of nature's inherent beauty, of music that was performed out of joy rather than the drums of war, of aesthetics produced by fine craftsmen to express greater meaning of the world. She taught him how to cook, to make medicine, of wood carving and meditation. He had begun to realize that the old ways he grew up with were antiquated and flawed and that he began to find discontent with his past. Even as his bandages came off for the last time, he stayed to learn more and she would teach him. Her final lesson came when it was her time, and for the first time in his life, he experienced death not as a gruesome sundering of body and soul but as something truly peaceful and as something new to experience in the next life. He gave her the burial that she asked for, and now on his own to learn, he left on a journey to simply explore and see the many landscapes of the world. He was aware that he likely would not be welcomed by the societies that were out there with his frightful visage, and although he has moved away from the lessons of his youth, he still had a longing to fight. He would find himself just as nomadic and a hermit as she was, catering to passerbys who would stumble upon him, sparring in good sport with those interested to fulfill his desire for combat, and in exchange he would ask that they share what they know, be it stories or music or crafts, through them he would learn more. |
