I LIKE RIDGEBACKS A LOT!!!!!!
-- THE RIDGEBACK HAREM --
After an age of peaceful rule in their own lands (swiftly, smoothly, but necessarily violently thwarting all attempts made by the outlying clans) the Imperial prince Dreyse, and his advisor and brother Norinco, move to the realm of lightning to take a Ridgeback wife.
With the hope that this will settle the unrest between multiple clans of dragons all scrappily vying for power out in the lesser-populated, so-called "savage" lands (only those from the imperial metropolis refer to them this way, however) Dreyse, the emperor's son and rule of his own series of realms, is allowed by his family to try wining favour elsewhere.
The Lightning Highland's recently-widowed (in a battle against the very dragons imposing on their land) matriarch, Buckmark, who seemed to have come to terms with her mate's passing, now appeared to be devoted to the same cause-- Perhaps she was, but intentional or not, this union only served to incite more hunger for power among the residents of the Highland and the surrounding territories.
The most snaky of the Ridgebacks, and generally the younger ones (who had been privileged to be born into the clan's pre-existing hierarchy) were more than happy to further their advances through the union but many of the older generations, even those in command of the military, were uncertain, and preferred to continue running things as they always had been.
General Harquebus of the Blitz, who took his job very seriously but was aging before everyone's eyes, hoped to mentor what few of the promising young ones would allow him to take them under his wings. His position would be up for review, however, as he was urged towards retirement after hundreds of years spent defending previous monarchs. Brigadiers Ardea and Hikigane are some of his would-be replacements, both with their own agendas as well.
Much of the focus is on a family of nobles, headed by voracious but timid father Bahadur (who is not part of the royal family or friends) the siblings consist of:
Medregal, betrothed to the high-born Lorentz and the family's key to integrating themselves into the monarchy (but Medregal is engaging in an affair with the war hero Aileron)
Kuftkari, the oldest brother, who gracefully aims to rule the fricking school no matter the cost to those around him (yet always turns down those who would wish to canoodle with him even if they are high-born and could advance his goals-- rather, he wants to be in control of his rise to power and not owe it to any other dragon.)
Caldera, planning to join the military once he is old enough and has won the king's favour, but is constantly bested by his half-sister Asoq, much to his constant chagrin and Kuftkari's equally-constant (but aloof) delight
Nirbheek, best friend to Asoq and though she has no particular desire to engage in the quest for power or bloodthirst typical of her family and those around her, she has no qualms flirting with high-born dragons.
Asoq (ASackOfQuarters who is their half-sibling from one of Bahadur's previous relationships and, rumour has it, possibly the only true link to the royal family, though Kuftkari would shoot that down immediately. These rumours are unbeknownst to her, and she would prefer to be a hardened warrior. The general Harquebus secretly takes her as a pupil, and she becomes close friends with brigadier Ardea.
The other dragons in the lair all have their own stories/place in the hierarchy or outside of it, and most are looking to integrate into the main family or their close circle of "friends". Sisters Taranis and Rustom have a friendly rivalry, brothers Viatkin and Scaramanga have less of one, with Viatkin a proud father (aka consort to any royal) to many dragons of noble rank, whereas Scaramanga is a pretty casual soldier who is being pushed to similar duties. Scaramanga is “promised” to the young Sardi when she’s old enough, they’re mostly just friends right now as they get to know one another. Sardi’s parents are trying to groom her to be a hardass/future guard to royal ladies and she is very good at pushing Scaramanga around even though she’s young yet.
