I think the reason nothing happened is cause your dragons are all full once you bar goes down to 98 or so you can then feed em. And for getting food you can go to gather items and you should be able to get the food.
Yeah, I'd imagine stuff like that isn't quite optimized for mobile, sadly. I'm sure that's something that will come in the future, though! In the meantime, do you possibly have a computer you could access?
No they don't exactly more like starve and how you feed them is if you go to your Dragon lair on the right side there should be an arrange and feed. If you click the feed it should feed the food to your dragons.
